Back Side: Playback
Down at the bottom is our playback button, and when you hit the playback button, the camera switches over into the playback mode. There's a lot of button changes and dial changes that take place when you have your camera in the playback option. So, you can use a multitude of different controls on the camera to go from image to image. And so, if you like to scroll through images or you wanna kinda shift to them, you can use the buttons, you can use the dials, whatever you want to go back and forth on these. Talked briefly before about the zooming in and zooming out functions on the camera. Let's do a little example on that right here right now. So, I'm gonna throw my camera into a program mode. I just wanna take a simple, basic shot right here just so we have something to work with. I'm gonna play back this picture right here, and then I'm gonna hit the playback or the plus button here to zoom in. And you'll notice that it zooms in very closely, very quickly, much more quickly than prev...
ious Sony cameras. So then, I can move my way left and right to check out how sharp a focus. And I can zoom out by turning this dial. And I can zoom in. I can use this control for navigating around. I can use this control for navigating around. What does the top dial do? The top dial goes to the next photo. Front dial goes to the next photo. So, if you wanna go from photo to photo you can do that. You can back out. You'll back out to the entire shot. And then, once you go here, then if you go one step further, then you can see a group of the images. So, if you wanna go through a lot of thumbnails, here's the images we've been taking in the class so far. We can go out even further than this, and we can go to a calendar. And so, if we've been shooting photos on different days, we can go to different days and select those days. If we wanna go over here to the left, we can choose, or to the right, we can choose to look for MP4 videos or different types of file types. Still images-- I'm not even sure what this one is. And so, we have different dates on the calendar. You can go to different months, select a different day. And we've only been taking pictures on one day right here, so we're gonna have to go to this one right here. And then, you can find your image. I'm gonna go to just the last image that I have right there, hit the center button and zoom in on that. And then I can zoom in, and you can set to do the zoom in multiple intuitive ways. We're gonna talk more about this as we get into the menu system. I hate to keep saying that, but there's a lot of things in that menu system that just are complicated, and so, I'm gonna go ahead and back out of this. And I think we can also hit-- Notice down here in the bottom it says menu. If we just wanna back out to the full image right there we can hit the menu and back out. So, always pay attention on the bottom of your screen for those extra little hints and tips. Alright, so we're zooming in and out. What else are we doing? We're getting rid of garbage. Yeah, that's a good thing, delete your images with a delete button there. There is a shortcut button for sending to smartphone, and we're gonna talk about that when we get into the WiFi network connections of the camera, but you can reprogram this button if you want, or you can leave it set up so that it's kind of a one-button press to send that image to your phone for easy, quick access to it from your phone for sending it off and doing other things with it. More to come on working with a phone in the remote options. Once again, the display button comes into play. In the play mode, hit the display, and it will cycle through between no information, a little bit of information, and a lot of information. I like that Histagram option to see if you got the right exposure, but I like the no info display so that I can see a nice, clean image without any clutter on it. So, all of them very useful. Just feel free to hit that display button when you're in the playback mode. If you shoot a bunch of pictures and then you hit playback to view them, something you may notice going on in the upper left of the screen is that the camera is gonna be counting down the images as it's downloading to the card, so it's letting you know how much time it needs to work before it downloads all those images. And so, just be aware that that'll happen after you shoot a series of photos. When you get into video playback, you're gonna hit the center button to start the video. If you go down, you can activate the volume controls, and then once you get playing the video, if you hit down again when the video is playing, you can have access to the rest of the controls for playback, pause, slow motion, and even photo capture on that. And so, I wanted to give you a little example of how to do a photo capture. And so, Kenna, perhaps you will participate in this. You don't need to go anywhere. I'm just gonna come around and-- so, I put the camera in the movie mode here on the top, cause I wanna shoot a movie. And so now, I am gotta lot of clutter on the screen. I wanna clean that stuff up. I don't need that stuff there. And so, I'm gonna use the movie record button, and I'm gonna record a short little video that goes over to Kenna. Kenna's gonna wave, and then we'll come back to the flowers. There we go, wave, and then I'm gonna come back to the flowers. And that's my very exciting video, and I will end that with a nice 10-second video. So then, I'm gonna play back this video. And this indicates that it's a video. This is a still photograph we can clearly see with the arrow. That's our universal symbol for playback. I'm gonna hit this center button to hit the playback, and then I'm gonna go down, cause I wanna see my controls. And I wanna pause it on Kenna, right there where she's gotta wave, and I want this to be a still photograph. So what I'm gonna do is I'm now gonna navigate over to the right. And this is my still capture option. So, I'm gonna enter here. And then, I could go forward and backward and select a slightly different frame, but I'm happy with this frame. So, I'm gonna hit the down, and you see that little symbol there, that's their photo capture. So, I'm gonna go down, and it just captured a frame of it. So, I'm gonna hit menu and exit. And so, now when I hit, I guess I'm already in playback, I have my video, but now I have a still photograph here. Now, this still photograph is only 2.1 megapixels. Alright? A normal photograph would be 24 megapixels because we're just pulling this from a standard frame of the video. And so, you can get that directly as is also in a 16 by 9 aspect ratio. But you can pull those frames if you need a frame from your video right in the camera. It's very easy to do. Alright. If you are in the playback mode, you get to customize buttons just for the playback option. And so, in the custom key PB, doesn't stand for peanut butter, it stands for playback. And so, if you wanna customize C1 C2 in the function button, you can reprogram those perhaps be a magnify button or something else that you find useful when you're playing back images. Back in the little corner of the camera is your access lamp. It will light up when the camera is recording images. The most important thing is don't turn the camera off. That doesn't really matter too much, but the camera needs to process all those images. Don't take memory cards out of the camera if that light is turned on. It's working and it's trying to store information to the card. If you do that, you're gonna probably lose information.

I've taken lots of John's classes as my photography journey has unfolded. Like all good teachers, John has a fantastic ability to take concepts which are complex and could be overwhelming, and making them accessible and much simpler. I'm lucky enough to own this amazing camera, I'm sure I'll get even more enjoyment from using it after taking this class - John has done so much of the hard work of learning away, now I feel like I can just start enjoying it!

Great information as always, John's approach is amazing, well paced and very informative. I own so many of his amazing tutorials, I feel like he's part of my family - but a lot more knowledgeable 😏
