Generating Key Ideas
Alright, so we need to articulate the tone of the brand so that we can explain in greater detail what style we're aiming for this articulation is good to get buy in from the client at an early stage, but it's also really helpful tool for you, the designer to generate ideas for symbols. A great tool for this is mind mapping. You may have done some of this in other design or illustration courses and we're going to use it here again because it's really a trusted method for us to think visually and get as many ideas on paper as quickly as possible. So you start by grabbing a pen and a piece of paper and then coming up with at least one word that acts as a sort of seed word that helps you discover other words. So your brand statement is a really good place to turn to for that. So I'm gonna put this aside so I'm gonna take the word whimsical here which comes from our brand's mission statement. So again, just pulling from ideas that are already there and trying to find ideas that that break o...
ff away from that. And what I'm gonna do is I'm going to break off of that. I'm going to think of ideas that are related to the concept of whimsical. I'm not necessarily going to go to a thesaurus and pull out synonyms because I'm not really looking for synonyms. I'm just looking for words that Sort of feel like this one that's how you get to something that's just a little bit more creative. So when I think of the word whimsical, I think of immediately what comes to mind is magic. Think of the word fun. And I think of effortless whimsy is sort of effortless to me, I think of eccentricity. So I'm going to write the word eccentric, then I think of the word colorful. So once again, all of these words, none of them are really synonymous with whimsical, but they're related. So uh from there I'm gonna sort of go out another level. So I've gone out one level here. I'm gonna go out one more. So when I think of magic, I think of top hats, I think of rabbits, I think of sparks, I think of the idea of mystery, supernatural comes to mind and then moving around just going to these other concepts, fun. I think of, you know, party, um, think of again, I think of color, which we have over here. So that's good. We're kind of finding more similar concepts that maybe stand out a little bit more. Um, and then again, we're just kinda gonna go around here and find these these sort of related concepts. And the idea behind this is that we end up with this sort of web of of concepts that are related but not directly and you can start to think of them in a visual way. Right? So in the center here we have the word neighborhood, which again is pulled from some of the verb age that is included in the mission statement. And I've gone out in all sorts of directions with this with this concept and I've highlighted some of my favorite words that relate back to the word neighborhood. So we have shared belonging intimacy, identity gathering. These are all really powerful words, um, that when combined together can sort of create a more distinct personality. So that's really what you're looking for here. You're looking for a set of words that when you see them as a list, they really make sense and they kind of come to life for you so that later on, you'll be able to bring it to life in a visual way.
