Reaching Out To Clients

(soft music) Let's talk about reaching out to clients. So let me go through a few examples of how it could go. And this is a pretty bad one. Hey client, let's say client's a luxury car brand. Hey client, I am going on a road trip across the US to I don't know, from Florida to Seattle, and I wanna show national parks to my audience. I need $50,000 and your biggest SUV, I'm leaving in 15 days. Let's do this. That is the incorrect way to go about it. (buzzer beeps) It might work in normal times, you know on short notice like that, it might work, I'm not saying this is a bad pitch but COVID, it's not gonna work for a host of reasons. National parks are closed, we can't travel. Aside from that, even if you could travel and national parks were open, the clients, this client probably has their car fleet on lockdown right now. You probably can't use it because they haven't figured out a good way to deliver them safely or to handle them, or they're just putting all marketing on pause and you'...

re showing up and saying what you need. It's just not gonna work. Did you want $50,000? How about no, because they're not spending right now, right? So all this is setting yourself up for a a response of no or maybe they're just gonna think you're completely disconnected with the world. Like this guy is trying to push luxury SUVs when 20 million Americans have lost their jobs, right? So be in tune with the times and it's okay to reach out. You definitely should reach out right now. My whole point with this episode is not that you shouldn't reach out is that you actually should reach out, but mindfully. So the correct ways to go about it are more, I know times are complicated or things are in the air or use things like that. Empathy, right? They're in the same shit you are, right? So just be empathetic because at the end of the day you are only job for a client at the end of the day, right, is to make money for them. So is whatever you're gonna propose to them gonna make them money? If it's no, even in, you know, short term, long term if it's probably no, then they're gonna do it, right. Especially now in COVID. Before they might just be like, it's a brand play. Let's give this guy a chance. Still, it would increase, you know, our awareness with the people who, you know, are into whatever he makes. But right now they're gonna be like, no, you know you also gotta make money and we have to direct our efforts towards that. So to recap, yes you definitely should be reaching out and you should be keeping in touch with your clients. You know, don't be silence. There's a reason why there's press conferences every day with like the government about the virus is just because in times of crisis, you need to over communicate. So it's good to email your clients, you know even once a week, if you have things to add, useful things. Just be top of mind, but be understanding of the situation and be, you know just tell 'em what you're up to, what you find out what you could do in the future, but be very chill about it. Don't try to force their hand because they're not ready right now. Just keep adding value, and when the time is ripe, they'll be ready to, they'll be ready to buy from you.

Perfect Timing They say things come at the right time and this workshop definitely did. Being a photographer is the greatest gift I could thank for, showing though my eye how I see existence is a blessing; but being successful from it is very tough! It has been a ride for me, and this workshop clarified so many things. The tools that are being shared are worth it all. Listening to these interviews made me feel not alone, hearing them speak about reinventing ourselves and trusting our creativity was inspirational. Specially the similarity of all about not giving up and staying authentic. Thank you Alex, you created a master piece of knowledge. Anabella.

What a wonderful resource! I really wanted to give Alex a HUGE thank you! This has been such a great resource as an aspiring Photographer. I feel way more confident and knowledgable about reaching out to clients. I still have some of my own homework to do but I feel like I am well equipped to tackle these challenges and to keep moving forward. Such a generous and honest resource. Can't thank you enough! And thanks to all who interviewed and shared their experiences.

Very helpful, timely insights and reminders that building respectful relationships, trust, and community are values upon which to build personal, professional and cultural fulfillment and success. The conversational details within the interviews are fantastic. And the common threads throughout make me hopeful. Thanks again to all!
