Pathfinders
What I'd like to do now is tell two short stories. I want to tell one story about a product, or a destination thing, that we did some strategic thinking about. Then I'll talk about one that was more direction, or process, oriented. So the first one goes back almost 20 years now. I was a high school teacher in the late 1990s and I had this idea about bringing a new class to my students. I was teaching sophomores, juniors, and seniors. And I looked at the curriculum. We had great history classes, Spanish classes. Those were the two that I taught. We had an ESL program that I taught in there. We had a baseball program, I taught there. We taught mock trial, I taught that one. Basically when they get you in education they just get you. And then I went to the superintendent and I said hey, I've got this idea and here's the draft name of the course, Pathfinders, Action and Ambition Management for Teens. And I said I want to bring a course to students that helps them manage themselves, their g...
oals, their ideas, and gives them some direction towards those destinations. Superintendent came back. They signed off on this course, Pathfinders, Action, Ambition Management for Teens, except for they wouldn't give me a class period. So I socialized it back before you could socialize things that you can today. I asked the students that I taught. I said hey, if I put together a one unit course, we have to meet three times per week, would you come from six to seven o'clock in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and would you have lunch with me on Wednesdays? 30 students signed up before the end of the first day. That let me know that we were on to something. Now I had a curriculum for those eight times two sessions, 16 morning sessions, and I brought in guest speakers for the eight lunches. The program went so well we repeated it one more time. Unfortunately when I left education, when I left that school, that program did go away. The purpose of me telling you that story, that was a destination based planning process. That was destination. I knew where I wanted to go. I knew I needed eight guest speakers. I needed 16 lessons, I had a curriculum that I had to fall into.
