Giving Back
we're going to shift gears I got all that sells the stuff out of the way because I do want to leave you with the message that comes from my heart uh I'm not going to go we'd be you know bring it to your knees tomorrow we will be talking about now I lay me down to sleep I know that a lot of people I've seen it on the forum say oh I'm not going to that one just take a peek I promise if you stick your nose isn't for are in this show for thirty minutes and watch what we're talking about you you will be captivated it's hard to turn away from those beautiful babies and imagining the loss of a child is just almost too traumatic for me but having seen hundreds of families say goodbye to babies it's just it's just it's a heartbreaker but when you know you can't change something you do know that you're making a difference so when I stand before god at the end of my life I would hope that I would have um I would not have a single bit of talent left and I could say I used everything you gave me th...
is is probably one of I know I'm a quota and I'm I use quotes a lot to send messages but this is the one that sits on my desk and this is the one that I sometimes have to remind myself that talent is something that we give it something that we share and uh this is one that really resonates with me and has for many years if you want to get involved in charity you have to find something that means something to you it has to be it has to come from your heart very hard to hop on somebody else's bandwagon it doesn't mean you have to found an organization it means you need to be connected through a family a friend or somebody who has had an experience true charity involves a sacrifice and does not have an ego or need to be noticed one way of knowing if you were being truly charitable is knowing that you don't want to do it but you're doing it anyway now I lay me down to sleep to me is a true charity understand that those photographers are donating all of their time no money exchanges hands they get up they go to hospitals they photograph one of the most heartbreaking moments of a person's life and they go home they do the artwork they provide these images and no money exchanges hands and that is true charity it is a true sacrifice I could tell you a million times when I got the phone call and thought I am not doing this tonight and when nobody else showed up to do it I was in my car heading to the hospital and you know I can't even speak anymore because I travel so much I don't get to work as much as I can in the organization but I could tell you stories of photographers that have just done amazing amazing work so my point is please do stop by tomorrow and give us the chance to tell you a little bit about it because there are ways you could help us outside of being a photographer we have drs is digital retouch artist we need thousands of d r ays because we have photographers who will do three four and five sessions a week that's you know even at the minimum thirty to forty images a piece they're drowning in retouching and they can't keep it up and we have these amazing dear raise that well doubt they download them they work on them they upload them in those families have them have them in a reasonable amount of time and if we didn't have d r ays we wouldn't have photographers because the ones that sacrificed the most are the ones that utilize the d r is the most so there's dear a's there's fundraisers there's all kinds of programs that we can help you work with us and we'll talk about those tomorrow tomorrow now charitable marketing is a little bit different and I want to leave on a high note today so there's true charity to me and then there's charitable marketing and charitable marketing is a win win for both parties uh to me you're providing exposure for much needed causes but you're also creating exposure for yourself and there's nothing wrong with that it's okay to allow yourself to grow when you're doing good things good things happen to good people and they should and so you know that old adage when you give you get back tenfold I think my life is truly that that quote because I just feel like you know the more I given I've never done anything that was what could I get out of it but the more times I tried to do something nice for somebody and then I'm feel like I get a reward the more obligated I feel to continue to provide that type of structure so here just a couple charities that in my favor words and just give you a brief explanation and you guys could take him where you want the locks of love really came out from a really funny story when my oldest was uh eight or nine years old I went on a trip and I was gone for a week and when I came back her dad decided to surprise me her hair used to be down to her back he decided to surprise me and he had it all chopped off while I was out of his own now imagine having nine years of combing this beautiful hair and coming home to this little bob head little girl I just almost had a high my daughter never knew I was upset but I literally said oh my gosh you look so cute that's been a while I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes and my husband was in the car like bobbing his head listening to music and she's like so excited like that looks great go show aaron and of course I go out to the car and I just I don't know I've never even raised my voice and I just kind of flipped the door open and I said what did you do and I'm his terrible at this point he's like surprise it's like you know I'm the next thing I think that came out of my mouth is did you take pictures and he goes pictures so you know this this big dramatic haircut that I wasn't mentally prepared and know I had a hair issue but I wasn't prepared for it and so of course I I was traumatized by it and I just felt like oh my gosh that the cutting of that first harris so hard and I would see mom's bringing their daughters all the time and they would say things like well she's going to cut our hair off next week she's donating to the locks of love and so we just started this within our own studio it wasn't a big deal but it has grown lots of studios do it now and we created a scenario where once a year we promote it all year long we tell little girls and moms and girl scout troops too uh start growing their hair and they were gonna have this event and then we have a day where you know we've had fifteen to twenty five girls show up and they all come in and we give him an awesome little gift bag it has all kinds of prizes moms dads were there these are people that we don't know most of the time that are just coming in we have hair salons that donate their time to cut the hair right there on the spot in the bags there ever nothing from session gift certificates uh really nice a yogurt place donated like certificates and just fun stuff for kids the girls come in and we do before they get the haircut image and then we do a shot after and we present it in a nice little follow folio and it says with locks of love from sandy putsch photography and with lots of love and uh so you can see just simple little before and afters and it's really interesting to see these children change they go from little girl like when you cut their hair off age so quickly and we have mom's stand in the back of the room and start to cry and they're just tearing up a cz their kids or you know this beautiful you know nine years worth of hair is being cut off for me I think it was therapeutic I just needed to recover from my own drama but for my clients it's an opportunity to capture those last moments with that hair before they make that incredible donation all right life is a gift and it offers us the privilege opportunity and responsibility to give something back by becoming more

Sandy Puc, I have attended a few of your events, in person and now on Creative Live. You never fail to deliver the gift of sharing your expertise and more. I am always amazed at how you have juggled a large family, your photography business with the university added, the teaching events that you do & the genuine donation of your love and time that you give with your foundation, NILMDTS among other things. You're an impressive & inspirational lady. Each time I see you, you refuel me, as this economy has been trying. Thank you. I bought the 3 day workshop, because it is a little hard to sit for 3 days straight without life and business distractions. I will watch again, and reference back as needed. I also bought your display kit for doctor offices/hospitals & malls. Thank you again for your amazing workshop and all that you so unselfishly give of yourself. Diana Brown Photography
