Controlling Time

When we're looking at a time with music that's a gigantic aspect of what makes music right, you have all these different things you have, like melody, which is the kind of the story, and then you have time, which is the groove, the movement, the knowhow, faster things, how slower things, the beat stuff like that. So when we really control time within able to weave controlled a very huge aspect of the program, we've controlled its ability to make all these different things of different timing fit together and that's a powerful, powerful tool within live. So this is going to go down a little bit of rabbit hole around wart mose always different aspects, but you're gonna have complete control over your playback of your timing, having everything sink together. Let's look at that so timing in able to life, the music and live remains elastic at all times live is capable of time warping samples while stream them from disk as to synchronize them to the current live sets tempo. This happens with...

out affecting the pitch, which could be changed independently. Mixing or matching audio from different origins is therefore extremely easy, says from the able to manual uh, so in other words, I'm just going to skip ahead to uh one of these images so in other words, if I have all these different samples at all these different speeds if I played them back it would sound horrible they would just sound totally out of time but able tio because the way it uses and changes sound by warping it I can make them fit together and be like a solid group so that's the power of controlling our timing and warping within able to so I'm going to show examples of that but I'm just gonna go back a little bit and all right let's open up an example awesome. So to start I'm going to play this track this track has already warped we're gonna talk about warping but just to show you the very basics of what we can do here is I can change my bpm now it's a slower playback I know now we're like oh yeah whatever like tractor could do that anything could do that but I mean it took humanity a long time to be able to do that so there's a little credit here um we can play back anything once we prepare it properly and then we can speed or slow it down and that's the key to be able to get these things toe fit together a great example of that is let's say I am playing these three samples here and these three samples are not worked there are different speeds it's like painfully out of time like everything was kind of weird so well what happens when we work these tracks it all fits together so that's what we can do we can take things that are slower or faster have all fit together as one tempo and then I could even come in here and change the tempo of all three of them on still sink together playing in time there we go so there's a few aspects here just to start to look at first one is tapped tempo uh anyone who's used analog here that has like tap tempo in a delay or anything like that is familiar with this but basically what you can do is you can come in here I'm just going to stop um I can tap it by just going one two three four and it read time and then created its own bpm right there but I can also come in and just go one two three four okay gabber on the senate so this is really useful if let's say you're playing with another musician or a band you just tap toe whatever they're playing and then you can kind of sink um or you have this which is just manual I compress it go up or down to go uh faster or slower and I can also just type it in so I can type seventy their way ah we have nudge sample nudging let's look at the so nudge button lets you temporary they speed up or slow down the playback this could be similar to nudging on turntables this can help you sinking through midi or when you have two computers playing together it can sink the two singles so in other words, I've jammed with a lot of people with two computers do needs to computers good old time it's like it's like a battleship you know you put your two computers against each other playing but they'll kind of get out of sync sometimes even if you connect them there's lots of ways of doing that but that's where the nudge comes in so if I play this if I hold it so it's slowing it down like oh when he goes back but the idea is generally like hold it for a few seconds until you kind of catch up so you can tell if you're a little faster a little slow and just kind of nudge back into place that's all that this is your timing right here for four ah it's your time signatures so I can do like two four um to eight whatever uh I won't go into what the theory of time signature is but it's right there most people make music and four four but you can always change it to some really crazy different timing if you wanted to write their, um and then metrodome turn it on for everyone who wants to actually be in beat when they're recording themselves to the maginot play your part right awesome so now let's look at warping tracks unless have we had any questions on that so no we had a question about your controller can you please explain the connection between the controller the pads and able to software so you mentioned it a little bit earlier are we going to cover that we're going to go a little bit into setting up a middie controller okay but the very basics of it is there's tons of different jewelers so I have a push here this is the abc twenty five I think I personally have like twenty or more controllers all different site because like because I teach I'll have a student yeah, that has some controller questions so I get the controller and I walked through it it's just so I know on products but uh basically as is because they worked with able to him on this one and with the push when I plug it in it does certain things like it's starts clips so I'm gonna stop so I concerned stop clips in this area and that comes as is but everything that like all these knobs and stuff I have to map and we're going to go over how to map these things have no effect things and able to but this is really chief it's like one hundred twenty bucks yeah on dh then it's a keyboard which you just plug it in and you can play the keys so I'm not going to demo the specifics of all the different controls of this because that will only be equivalent to some of you but I just know you get a controller and it's just you know you can see here on a mouse click everything or you can have a controller and it it just feels more I'm more interested in it it feels more tactile like I'm doing something and that's the only difference but everything I show you can be done with just a mouse there's many times where I'm traveling and I just have a mouse and I'm just creating music on the fly and it's terrible because I even use the mouse on the keyboard on the computer so I get that like guerrilla hand thing where you're like, oh my hand hurts but you know you have an airport that's kind of what you d'oh so I hope that answers it totally we're going to look at the push maybe a little bit more towards the end. I didn't want to just show off the push because I don't want this to seem daunting at all I don't want you to think you have to get a five hundred dollars device to be able to play ableto like you could just have a built in in in like you can get, like fifty dollars keyboards or less. I mean, the first one I haven't was on craigslist for twenty bucks. I broke my first album off of it. You know, don't let gear ever hold you back.

Hello, Firstly gotta thank you for your great tutorials, and sharing the knowledge of making music; then I wanna say, I bought the Ableton Live 9 tutorial package, but I didn't heard or better say understand some of Mr. Cotec's words; that's why I wonder would you please send me an English subtitle of his excellent teaching? I will be much grateful for this. Best Regards, Malc

Isaac is the man! He is such a great teacher and you can tell has full control over the information. I already feel like I am many steps above friends who have used ableton for years because of this course setting a foundation for me to learn and experiment. Thank you Isaac and crew!
