Follow Action Breaks
Yes, so this continues to allow information we've talked about earlier again, a lot of this is building on itself, we're learning the very fundamentals so that once we have that it's not so scary when we open up able to it's not so overwhelming it's not going to be really easy once we know all these basic things and eventually going to start getting into playing with the samples really morphing and changing these things. So to continue the conversation we have been talking about with follow actions, I'm going to show you just one really simple activity that you khun d'oh with follow actions as a creative potential in production. It's can be used in live performance, but really good for production. So in this follow action breaks example, set, we're going talk about beat generation follow actions can help us create new and interesting breaks on the fly with the semi randomized features we can make, it fills new beats, and so in this example, lives it will help you demonstrate and experi...
ment with this idea. If you get this course through creative life, you can then download this example set like all these other example sets that I've been showing you and these specific ones example sets are really for you to play with a creative idea like the building d j one building a deejay said then we have this follow action we have like a remixing and sullen where a lot of the other ones are more fundamental exercises you should be more fun so we're going to open up the e five follow action lives said they were going to take clips at follow actions, create random ization and play with our timing in our llegado mood so open that up now to start I have a very simple for for I wanted to go with something very simple I mean even slow it down I'm a sucker for one ten house really like it uh very simple is not a lot happening right? Well let's have like it's already more interesting these rhythm and snare sounds are going to be using our recording that my, uh, musical partner mr move has made he actually sells he's on our state uh came out yesterday but I mean he uses his example of we've got these few rhythms and they're good, but how can I create a random ization? How can I make generative so we're going to use our launch moods and actually no, we're going there follow actions within the lunchbox what I'm gonna do is I'm in it like select this one and I'm going to say follow action let's put it to one and then other meaning it's just going to go to something else and I'm gonna do that for all of these I'm just going to click and select that whole range and then I'm going to go full action one and then right here I'm going to set it to other and now if I play this it's already kind of moving around these different samples as compared to staying really stagnant but there's one other thing which is the low gotta move since this is not llegado it's starting in the beginning every time so it's starting on the one which might not be what we want so I'm going to select all those again and set it to right there got on those now it's going to play the next sample anywhere the last sample was off so that way we have much more interesting movement and just to keep this outside of a bar I'm going to change it to two beats so it's gonna move faster so we're already having this kind of movement I'm gonna do that same thing with this snare so I just kept this as is and about eight or sixteen bars you're gonna get pretty bored but if I select all of these again, I'm gonna put it to let's do one and llegado mode other for any now wade got this generative deep right? I'm going to stop this to reset my global timing I'm just going to hit record we have that global record up here and it's going to record it into arrangement so I already set up these flutes to be random. So it's moving randomly between these different flute samples moving randomly between the different percussion there's ideas here, there's some things that are good there's some things that are good now I pressed space bar, which is stop I'm just gonna stop everything I'm gonna press tab toe look into my arrangement view and now when I'm looking here, all the things I just recorded our right here now, if you remember this is the play an arrangement so I'm going to press that so we actually hear what's happening here. Now, if you're creating a beat at home, you can come in here and you could be like, I really loved this section and then that could be your next beat or I really love this and you can grab it you can even control or command d to duplicate that section and that could be your new beat it's a great way to come up with ideas automatically. You know, I call this like, uh what is it like moth in the machines sort of thing this is like the machine kind of developing concepts, but your your human role is editing like how do you choose to take that? How do you choose to change it? And edited it. So it's a conversation between you and technology, which is really cool, but that's how you can creatively use the follow action to make some new type of, uh, deep or new type of melody, you name it awesome. So it's a really simple activity, and I'm actually this is going off on a little bit of a different idea, but I want to also show you something of how we might use this in a live setting. I'm just going to I'm not going to go deep into this. Uh, but I'm going to briefly show you what my life set looks like, because we we were talking about this a little bit during the break, and I'm just going to show you, uh, how I use follow actions in a live setting, so no, I don't want to say that. So this is me just opening up. What? My life's it looks like I take my tracks and a separate them into stems. We're going to talk about that a little bit when we re mix later on. But when I have a song like, for instance, this song playing here, let me make sure bpm great this's gonna keep looping on if I have, like, I can bring out that section and, like, milo plays violin with me sometimes he'll play violin and we'll just keep looping on then when I want, I bring in this section of the lead, so we don't even have to think about it and this is where I used my follow actions so I can set them up in my sets automatically bring in the next section, especially when you have a phil, anything like that, I don't have to worry about it. I will never get my fill wrong, but then I can always keep looping this section keep moving. You could do that with d j songs cut up a song haven't automatically automatically set the launch follow action to whatever that length iss so that's another way of looking at his fall actions to so we've looked at creating than production and they're also using them in a live set to just automatically moved down our tracks. When we have really specific breaks that you always need to hit, you don't want a break to fail. I have definitely done that before it's like because you have to wait till the break re does itself, you can just, you know, two bars and go back to it, you have to, okay, that was that was that was a joke guys wait till the next until it comes back around.

Hello, Firstly gotta thank you for your great tutorials, and sharing the knowledge of making music; then I wanna say, I bought the Ableton Live 9 tutorial package, but I didn't heard or better say understand some of Mr. Cotec's words; that's why I wonder would you please send me an English subtitle of his excellent teaching? I will be much grateful for this. Best Regards, Malc

Isaac is the man! He is such a great teacher and you can tell has full control over the information. I already feel like I am many steps above friends who have used ableton for years because of this course setting a foundation for me to learn and experiment. Thank you Isaac and crew!
