Building a Door Scrim

So here's our table of build stuff so on this mega table here we have things that we're going to build first of all a scrim the big window light scrim and what we've done is pre cut some tomb so let's start assembling them and what we want to do is to lay them out so you're going to want to pre cut this up on the screen or not here but three pipes and you can buy the pvc pipes in the eight foot links or ten foot links and then you cut them down so you want to cut three thirty six and a half inch pieces all right who's gonna help me here elaine come on up will help me to start this assembly part and then we have four thirty four inch pieces okay so the thirty four inch pieces are gonna be your vertical and the thirty six is will be the across and would have saved one for the middle if you want to do a middle piece so it's something like that and then we have our corners and our teas it is a test now where the corners go on where the these go you're such a tease huh don't attack him yet ...

honey because we got more stuff to do before we attach them she's good those e know what I'm doing is jumping ahead all right typically would get some glue this is ah glue for pvc and you're not going to glue all of them because you want this to be able to come apart right so we want to quickly take it apart put it back together but some of the pieces should be stuck together so you can choose to glue and what I do is I decide which ones want to stay together so maybe this tea and this corner will stay on ah glue those but making sure to leave the other one's apart so then they can fold it down it's just one small strip of things we're going to put in the middle of all of this some elastic and open up some of that get ready to trims them off so we want to run elastic through the pipe the whole outer perimeter so that when we take it apart it doesn't go over the place and it makes a little easier to assemble it back together again okay this's a knife use it carefully you can use that to cut that if you want once we get that open um a tape measure so once we put together the script and I don't think we'll do the glue because we don't really need to use the blue for this this one here but what you would do is decide which ones this is helpful thing which means you're going to glue and which ones you're not and then I usually mark on here a little arrow on the ones that I'm not going to glue so I know where to pull otherwise you end up pulling I wanted to glued and you wondering why it's not coming apart so dollar arrows on those because those are ones that won't be glued these will be glued this one won't be glued so put a little arrow on that I'm like that okay? And then you had glue them all right so you're gonna run that through beach one of the pieces around the perimeter you need help or does it need to be cut you can run it first and they will cut it down one whole giant way it has to go through the corners and everything to so you could maybe start here right into their just run it down they could get a mousey going into houses this is a true test this is a party hardy har can we get the harder ones? I will assist so again the reason for this court is to make life simpler when it comes apart most back together again it's not one hundred percent necessary it doesn't hold it together anyway but it does make the whole thing just work better and kevin pin you remind us is that three quarter inch pvc yes, that shouldn't be up on the screen but maybe not this is a three quarter inch um and scheduled forty um just so you guys know where you're getting t v c they're different thicknesses the diameter, not the damage, but the actual wall thickness schedule forty is a little thicker, which means it's, a little more sturdy, doesn't flexes much. If you get the thinner one you could find your frame is, moreover, all over the place, so makes you get a three quarter inch schedule forty, and when you buy the corners and t fittings, make sure you don't accidentally by threaded ones because they won't go on. They just did a press fit one okay, don't laugh because we had that happened once before, a little more slack there through all right, so the other parts that you're going to do what we're assembling this year is you're going to go to the fabric store and you're going to get parachute cloth nylon that is translucent it's you that ripstop nylon is pretty good because it's sturdy and has about the right translucency, but you may need to look around to find something is just the right translucency and some elastic. They use one inch wide elastic and that's going to go across the corners of your parachute cloth so that it will hold on when you slip it onto this thing, we're almost there. And the parachute cloth we're not going to sew it in classics I don't know how to sew very well um just save time so I have one that's already been so and I'll show you what it looks like and how you do the corners on this so the centerpiece I didn't run anything through the centerpiece obviously I wouldn't really work so what you wanna do lane is to pull that somewhat snugs make sure this is all reasonably tight, okay? And take all the slack out of it and then you want to pull it so that it's tight so it's extended a little bit and tie it off I'll hold that they're going to tie it to this one here tell me a nice little not basically you want it so that when it sorry more blood on my hands when it's assembled there I just hold the pieces together but just to give you some slacks that we take it apart basically going to fold it up like this and you're good to go when you were very just assemble it pretty easy just throw it out boom it's your pieces in the right place and then just press fit corners everything on there you know it depressed it too hard but just precedent make sure that he's facing center and wait before you put the center on this but the crossbar in the center yeah this is your parting gift your lovely parting gift you didn't press the corners on though I'm not sure I could give you an a in class yet all right pressure corners in nice and tight you should be good to go so the tighter you press on the harder it's going to get a part we're gonna make sure it's nice and tight for eases ok so there's your frame hold onto that peeked through the window smile and then we have our fabric there's a couple of them you know the difference between these two different classes this is old yellow so depending on how old your thing is, this is when I made a long time ago uh it's pretty old and dirty and gobbled up basically you want to your corners like this your lasting I just stitched across the corner that should hook over the top of this thing that you blew it sorry what could you blew it for velcro it um velcro it included with elastic I don't know if going it would hold it quite as well. Yeah, I know they have the glue on stuff for fabric you have no so you could try it I don't know foothold but you could hook that one on the bottom there there you go there's your scream um people always ask you know about the the cross bar with a crossbar create a shadow and if you're lighting it from the back with a big wide light pattern that crossbar just gets absorbed in the light you don't ever see it but if you were going to be lighting this tight cia being that maybe sorry on the wrong side of being that's only feeling that much which is totally possible that change the quote of your light you one of those smaller light source then your bar may show especially if it's being real close can but in general use you won't even notice that bar in the in the use of the thing so I think it's standard by yourself well a couple things you can do you can you clamp it to a light stand for you to make legs his legs I took the t and cut it in half but many thing if you're going to do this is you don't cut it exactly in half because then it will just fall right off so you could it a little less than half you know so it's more like a see it comes across the middle little bit on and then you could just plant that right on like that and lena back should just press snap right onto the frame somewhat um they're different things you can do to we have light stands over here of course if you do have light stands in your studio just regular light stan and clamp it to a light stand work straight too there's no uh screw on the top of that one so with their clamps that aaron you're ddc bag which foe? Palm iii dc bag is not near me but uh kalen could you grab a clamp from my bag girl the bag for me please? You know those big grouper clamps you just clip that to that like that works pretty good okay go and their questions about the assembly of this and then we'll start playing with it. Any questions in this video let's see could tio out go ahead right here you have to worry about the legs shot with a light and everything is that going to affect anything? The bbc or these legs the legs on light stand you don't really worry about the legs showing too much because general you're gonna have your subject either sitting right here standing if you are worried about it you could just rotate them a little bit I have a hard time rotating because wait in that way so they're slightly out of the way don't casting shadows but germany's I'm like that's kind of how you use it and we're able to see could were we able to see the back there was rooting around? Maybe teo teo kevin people are loving this in the chat rooms we have lindo cafe saying that was awesome large east so cool russia I'm jean nice way to stand it this stuff is so clever from mojo fifteen fifteen year this's the kind of stuff people always want to know how to make their own stuff and that's what we're doing here for two days yeah whatever just on the whole stand idea one way you could take it a little further I have this at home that have made this before about and bring it with me is to actually take these arms and he's just been that up it'll come right off of that and we put it up a little higher okay bring it into the middle on then we have another vertical pipe here if you could manage in this now we just get another vertical piece of pvc clamps same thing on here but the same little tease on their snap it to that and now you've got a vertical and on this vertical you can actually mount your flash so it's an all in one flash stand light stand then it becomes a portable thing that you could just take this whole thing put it where you want your flashes here okay um I should have brought those other pipes to show you that but I just believe I think we have time to get to that but since you're asking about the legs that's actually really cool set up because it's about the perfect distance if you have your flash right here you can set it up with the zoom of the head that's one thing we talk about right now is how do you set your flash to work with this? But if you just do the same set up, add two more teas and one more vertical and then some sort of clamp to hold onto your vertical and actually showed you one in my bag. Hold that. Will you bring my actual bag over here, you see back the red bag, that's it. So here is one of those little clams was talking about that's meant to go on to a pipe. So you just latch that onto any pie puke, even attach it to this one and there's your spigot. You just put your flash it on there. Boom! And what is that thing called again? A clamp? Uh uh. You know, I don't know a name it's a just a generic brand. I just found it on being a chai think or amazon, but I think I may have a link for it in the pdf I can report that it's just a no name thing, but it's a this is pretty handy because it does have that made to go on piped. It works great to clamp the pvc that your homemade goodies or or right to a light stand itself clamp it on attaching extra flesh I do have some questions. Yeah kevin thrown out there okay, so do you know how much it costs you how much it would cost you to make this particular item this grim yeah, depending on what kind of fabric you buy the pbc you're talking twenty to thirty dollars where you buy it from um you may have some fabric already lying around maybe slow people pvc sitting there grew garage from projects you know are things so but pvc is cheap. It really just takes a little time to do with some cutting and measuring and put it together in the last six pretty cheap woman on the verge says can I just buy the one that you just made no woman on the burj has to go out and make it yourself for twenty thirty dollars so that's awesome. Yeah. Yeah what I think you said earlier what kind of fabric used what? And I missed that what was yeah ripstop nylon this one is it's not an actual rip stuff. This is my older one. The new one that I got not too long ago is the rip stop and you could tell it's ripstop this one's actually little maybe a little more translucent than that one this has little squares is that the parachutes parachutes cloth and if you want to make some c hammer pants out of the left over this kind of nice to so that's parachute cloth for parachute pants or scrims whatever you need to make yes, a couple more ideas coming in and I love that all the folks out there actually trying in with their ideas around things and things that they have made similarly this could be used as a portable background frame. What do you want that yeah toe hold the background yeah it's amazing what? You it's pretty funny because once you start playing with tv, see your coming up with all kinds of ideas like oh, I could build you know, a castle in the mountains out of pvc a little uh huh it's pretty amazing that all you do is you start playing with it and I've made, um target frames for my kids for our tree in the backyard of pvc and all kinds of crazy stuff. So it is pretty cool and I like the idea that people are throwing in ideas and things because that's what this is all you know we don't create a vacuum unless you want to suck and that's kind of like my model for a while as we all take ideas from other people and we mold them into our own that's what d a wise like taking something that maybe is used somewhere else and applying it to your industry or modifying it slightly, so use other ideas and share with other people and don't be afraid to go out and just make something even if it's something exact copy of this I don't care you know make make it I knew it play with it and maybe you find something that you can do to this make it even better and you'll tell me I could make a better next time you know, I've had a lot of people do that when I do show this they'll say oh, you know what? We could it cool if you had this or this or this and I'm like that's even better, you know, so experiment of fabrics different different nylons I have and I think this one is probably my favorite because of the density of it is about right for a nice soft diffusion some of those some of nylon is really thin and you will get you won't get his soft delight with the thin fabric because you get more of a hot spot so the slightly thicker but if you get too thick than it takes away too much light end up meeting to speed lights all the time. Any other questions? Well, just one other idea from italy sixteen you know what kind of black cloth might you use if you're going to use this to block light perhaps like from coming through? Yeah, you know what the fabric story that's spring amazing ifyou're dude zone actually spent whole lot of time in fabric stores, but I've made a habit of going there now because that's where I found that shiny lycra stuff that I showed you earlier the silver and white but there's everything you can imagine I've even bought the interfacing which is used to lying things is like a heavier diffusion fabric and action brought some of that we'll use that as a diffusion fabric on another project so the fabric store is full of cool fabrics and things and shiny stuff and all that so there's there is black fabric on what's called this black fabric what black velvet would soak up a ton of light? Yes, um one that I used when I first started built some tools my studio I just used a black bed sheets I was back in the time when dudes like black bed sheets you know, like he come to my paramount black sheets and I'm black room in my black lights and stuff. So I took the black bed sheets which I was man from ever using by my wife and cut him up and made him into a negative into deflectors and other kind of stuff tio to amuse in the studio and there they were washed yes, one where we have a request coming in could we could resume in perhaps on the corner people are wondering looking see, again, it. Could you explain this, how you made those corners, fabric corners and his name on it. So, basically, you're taking your what inch elastic and just kind of sewing it across so that it just wraps over the corner. You just stitch it, boom right here on the fabric, uh, who's, hoosier zooming in on, but you can see right there how that's just hooked over that's. What I thought is the easiest way, there's. Other ways to attach this. I've used cord to clip it and pull it across, which is kind of a quick and dirty way if you want to, so but this is the easiest, because it pops right on and off and holds holds pretty well. Ok, any other, you could do good clips, you have clips on understand like that, too.

Going into my 4th year of photography, I finally built a photo studio in my home and after purchasing some lighting gear and other accessories, I decided to buy this course for additional ideas - GREAT class! I learned a LOT and was very inspired to be more creative. I especially liked that Kevin didn't joke too much or stray away from the course very much at all. Yet, he was still very entertaining and very informative. I'm putting so much of what I got form this class into action right away! This course DEFINITELY pays for itself - right away!

F8 and be there

This was an awesome fun class! So many great ideas on how to achieve various lighting effects on a smaller budget. You will save the price of the course most likely by making one softbox (or whatever) yourself. Highly recommended!
