Making a Human Light Tent
So another thing you can do when you have these and this is something that works really well outside is to make a light tent and what this is going to be is be won on the side one on the top and then we'll use of e flat on that as a reflector phil on this side so we need a v flat with white on that side and then we're gonna have to set up a stand here for this so if you can hold this for second I will get my thing that I need here so I'm gonna go grab a bracket to put on my light stand to enable me to hold this offer an angle somebody asked earlier about product photography can you use any of this for product photography? And yes, the idea of the light tent were surrounding top and bottom was soft light as it is a very great product photography technique and you just use this on a smaller scale you could make maybe half sizes of these things here you know if imagine this was a four by four another four by four maybe make a little tent too do some product photography they also make you ...
can buy like tents which really nice that are already designed they just popped right up and if you're into product photography the light ten is a great all around tool it's not going to make the most interesting light but it's a good brings out the detail looks good. Okay, I can't change this up. I used to working by myself so much put everything together, take these off. Basically, what I'm doing is I'm just kind of hodgepodge ing together some of the pieces that I already have to make a extended clamp for this so that just like a hold it off far enough away from me from the light stand. So maybe that little clamp we talked about the other day that has a little a little gripper thing we're hearing, so that makes a good pvc holder to when you stick it on something like this can clamp onto the cbc and hold it up don't want this to be a little higher that's what we're gonna be there was that plant down. Katie let go that now we're good so here's one wall and they were gonna get a b flat. Is there one that we cut down already? I don't think so, there's one that had the window cut into it we're going to cut a foot off the top of that thing because we will use that again still for something else afterwards, but here's a knife, here's a knife we know where the knife issue soothe latest down on the ground we're going cut a foot off the top so you're good with the knife when she helped caitlin cut one foot off this top side here um actually is this side I think yeah, so one foot off this top straight edge across you measure exactly a foot straight edge of your tape measure. I know you guys can do this. I have total faith in you. Well, I said everything else up. Any questions? We were setting up things here pretty good out there, could we? And so so just a reminder for everybody. These are things that we build earlier in the class. So tell us again about the door scrim and what we're gonna add two so the door scrim is something we created to what our first minute drive or by eight for four, but not quite four by eight I don't know yeah, I wish I was almost eight feet tall was more by saying yeah, right? Uh, yeah, they are I don't member of exact measurements, but they were in the pdf things, so they're kind of a standard ish sighs we could make them extra whatever you want, really? And we're basically going to create using these could do a lot of different things, so I talked about using his outside if you're in full sun outside there's like high noon, what do you do with high noon light orifice slightly off decide one o'clock light well this is kind of nice because you put your light source their son's up there it's going to beam into here illuminate this illuminate the top kind of give a nice little hair like kind of side light and then putting another reflect on that site it bounces back since we really soft beautiful light depending what you've got going on with your son so once we get that figured out we're gonna clamp this to the top of that laid on top and create a little tent over her and put on the top of that I'll be a little angled angled intent the human tents yeah question if I didn't want to use the speed light if I wanted to use an alien be or anything like that would you make any other adjustments no pretty much just shoot right through it like you she threw it you can use any studio like if you have already alien bees or some of the brand of studio model lights or whatever light you're using it doesn't really matter too much um the nice thing about the lights is that it's easy to attach things to the front of them which is kind of fun but you can when you're just firing it through the back it doesn't really matter too much you can just put that standard reflector on it they have a wide surface area way should we go so you guys got it sweet ok so let's put that full that so the white sides out and put that on that side and we're gonna lay this one across that so you know kind of open that so let's hold on but you'll decide right here and I'll show you so we want to do is actually very similar to what you got you almost got it won't make a l right fighting kid up that uh here I am ok and then that's going to go across the top of this right here okay just rested on and I'll clamp these together all right you know with me now a tent so imagine during the full sun the sun beaming down to that you're gonna get this just kind of all around glowy surroundings of light so she can be in here if we made this a little taller hey uh she could be full length and if you had tolerance major screams a little bit taller you were to use something to elevate it is a little bit more may could put something against the bottom if you don't need that bottom cover to raise it up we're just gonna do kind of a three quarter sold I have you sitting on a stool or something over here and you know so why don't we bring that little posing stool yeah, that one's good and we need to get some sunlight on this thing so grab this put this back into here I need a little bendy bracket for this and we got one around here somewhere apart to disappear but I'm not I'm not looking very well here's mine well that's where you have to crank this thing way a pie here to make this work some going on of india pie and we're just going to try to create the make our sunlight here with these two day break it okay everything staying last will be on we'll probably need one one light for this I'm going to turn one on one channel a and then we'll crank it up high sky you know I can't like could you grab the little grip and move that another way thing on the floor in front of you so where I'm trying to position this is up as if it were like the sun meaning down on top of us angle that record can you see if this is aiming kind of at the cross of those two things they will you better know okay we'll see how much coverage you get there alright we'll probably uses a little reflector and the front toe add a little bit of phil to the front of her because the top inside of me nice but when you little film besides from the front she's the same secured and grab a seat they're so we'll shoot it first without the fill and then see what happens afterwards that's on channel a there's another flash going off write that one down there we turn that one off or is it up okay and actually a skirt you back just a little danielle so that you're kind of on the back edge of the there right at the border there ten yeah, perfect two point eight right now to fiftieth of a second I also is to fifty and we're pretty close groovy want to crank that up just a little bit zoom on that is twenty eight millimeter which is probably write a good relax that left arm just a little bit yeah bastian ah smiles like gasoline and forward it was nice there all right pretty pretty light and the only thing you probably could do to if you want him or phil as it is right now we don't really need to inch field because you can see we have light coming in from the back reflector wall so there's definitely if the shadows air soft beautifully soft directional works really, really awesome just the way it is people your strap in living here we're getting a little bit of spill in the background which is perfect you know just enough to illuminate the background is good this try that that's going a little bit bright but not two months it's good chin towards me just a little that's nice right there but if you look at the quality that we're getting softer and softer light comparing from the other ones and this is like a really super soft but you still don't lose your edge we're not your edge what your shadow and you're shaping which is really important so that's why I generally use the one one light you know a lot of photographers always put up maybe a flash behind the camera to fill where they put another phil over here that's fine that I can work but I find if you use one light with the right modifiers, you can still get the fill you need but you keep the directional shadows there, which is really important if you didn't have any shadows we have wouldn't be shaping so that's about its soft as you can get and still have some nice shaping shadows we had too much more filled to this you can imagine the shadow is gone and then it's just a it's just kind of flat portrait okay, so working pretty good this just shoot a couple more right there that's good that's like that nice turn your face right towards me here but they're good just hold that thought and relax your right and your hair is proof in out there just kind of pull it they're good and thinking happy thoughts just a little bit no all right, so as it is like that we could add a little more under light phil here in the front but I don't think we really really need to because it's just soft, soft, soft as it is, um gets us to where we want to go to our human late all right, boom. So main thing with this I've used this outside in the full sun you can almost use it like a photo booth, you know, if you're safer outside, he had a lot of people are kids you want to just run through a bunch of shots of them and throw them in there works great on ben you don't need any flash it all you just use the sun and you've got this gorgeous gorgeous light just about anywhere so it's a very versatile thing to just know and if you have these pieces in the back of a car, you have a scrimmage game or something from west got that's perfect for this screw throw that up there you're good to you questions from behind the wall let's put it in the light coming out from behind so I just wanted to read some comment s as well as questions kevin has given me taking away my fear of lighting as well as show me how to get started without a great investment and things may not use or need that's exactly what we've been doing here? That's it that's it I'm glad to hear that, because that's, what we're trying to do is to get you, um, playing with light, you know, break down the barrier to getting into it and to learning about light, learning what tools you eventually want to buy or use because there should be no barrier should get in there, he should learn, learn as much as you can, and then you decide I'm gonna invest in this and this and that. Whatever exactly so a couple quick questions, how would you or is this what you did deal with the wind? Um, I wouldn't have a really huge assistant down there one time I had that was shooting. Speaking of big assistance, this is totally off topic here, but I was doing this one shot where it was a bit a bride and a pool of water, and I was under bridge standing over under shoot straight down like that, and the only way to get the shot was to climb up on to the railing of the bridge, which is around, you know, handrail and to stand on that and then the lean over and point straight down, so have big guy grabbed my belt and he just held on and leave you and it was like the creepiest shot I've ever done, because it was just me hanging by my pants and like me. And if you let go, we're all in big trouble before the love of photography. Yes, what work he has held out, like, what do they got you? What? Good fun! Good, fine!

Going into my 4th year of photography, I finally built a photo studio in my home and after purchasing some lighting gear and other accessories, I decided to buy this course for additional ideas - GREAT class! I learned a LOT and was very inspired to be more creative. I especially liked that Kevin didn't joke too much or stray away from the course very much at all. Yet, he was still very entertaining and very informative. I'm putting so much of what I got form this class into action right away! This course DEFINITELY pays for itself - right away!
F8 and be there
This was an awesome fun class! So many great ideas on how to achieve various lighting effects on a smaller budget. You will save the price of the course most likely by making one softbox (or whatever) yourself. Highly recommended!
