Flashlight Lighting Q&A with Review

So this was from pew, honey, which is, are you spot me during that when using this particular type of light method? And I think that was when we were using the fashion it's flashlights. Yeah. That's a good question. And because you look at it in such a contrast, the light spot meeting could work if I spot made it on her face and then probably opened up have stopped from that. Um but because this wall is pretty bright and that's so dark, I can't spot meter and either one of those exactly. But the shadow side of her face would be a place like not in the dark shadow, but right about here on her cheekbone right there, I could spot meter there, but that would mean coming in close spot metering, locking the exposure backing up. So I basically just a trial and error really it's kind like the way I mean with the light kind of guess I think from experience you I could get it within half stop third to stop, and then I just make one final adjustment and go so this was shut. Put the information on...

here, here's the settings on that was a sixty of a second shooting a two point eight s o three twenty with my one o five lens andi was shooting manually, I just manually set an exposure tested it I knew it was about to stop, I think offer something when we did the first test and brought it down and then just shot dressed the way so this is all in manual issues, some like this manual is the best way to go, but I do use aperture priority a lot when I'm outdoor natural light people have asked about that, but in the studio like this manually is really the best way to go to control and know what you're going to get that way no matter where she we move and if we get less shadow or whatever, we're always going have a consistent exposure as long as that hot spot of the flashlight stays on her face there, so we've been using speed lights today we have a question for a machine in mckenna and some votes on this one about how do flashlights and also earlier how did those compared to video lights? We've heard a lot about video lights are there and people were also asking about ladies versus cfl's if you talk about some of these other ships of light, yeah, and I like using video lights as well, and I've got a bunch of video lights that I've turned into photo accessory lights there's one of them in particular that's a little square like this with the vary a ter on its second dimmitt and adjusted it's fairly bright and it's kind of nice because it'll fit right across the back of a soft box fill that up on illuminate and it's pretty wide angle so you can actually use it in a soft box I've got a variety of different realize that just got that one in a kitten and there's another one how it's a little whiter um we're going to show you something share something some other options on that tomorrow we'll coming up there but compared to cfl which is fluorescent fluorescence are great if you're shooting video there have to be careful about the shutter speed flicker going on and but the daylight balance fluorescents are nice led so much better and they're getting affordable uh not as fragile if you happen to bump them cfl you can crack the bulbs and have done that many, many times wasted the bulbs and they're more expensive. So um I suggested this point if you find an led version and a cfl version, they're pretty close to reality might be a little more expensive spend the extra because we're going to much happier sturdier its state more stable it doesn't take time to warm up cfl's you have to warm up for a few minutes to reach full brightness so if you put him on and start shooting, the exposure is going to change so I do have cfl lights that I use I've got, but I'm really starting to stock up on leads and flashlights taking one of the things that I'm walking to the store and I'm going to say this cool flashlights like without a work grab that and try that and ladies gently, they can make them, you know, perfect daylight balanced a cz well, so it's, easy to tow use for photography and video as well. So and what kind of what kind of light is in the flashlight? This is an eligibility cree led which, krys, if you've the type of leads that have, like, multiple little bulb there generally, the lower quality ones that doesn't that doesn't mean they won't work, but you find a flashlight and it's got like, twenty seven little tiny bulbs in there. That's the very cheap bulb it's not gonna be that great, but when you see one big little square one in there and it's going to super bright that's acree, which is a brighter, stronger, better ladylike that's what these have that creates like a single little tiny square in the middle. All right, kevin, I am warning I'm gonna come up here with you, I'm wondering if we can go through and do a little review of everything we made today everything. Everything we made today for those people who weren't with us all day, we're going to start with the door scream yeah, boom this rock through real quick. Yeah, really? So first thing we made today was our door screams so called because it looks like a big door size of a door made this out of pvc pop this thing together. Fabric from the fabric store cut and paste and boom. There you go. The reason this is so important and these air legs thank you. Nice legs. By the way, the reason this is so important is that this particular tool is so versatile even if you're not lighting in the studio, take this out into the sun boom block your spot, the son of her subjects. And yet this glowing, soft, light, it's incredible, so incredibly useful tool. I think everybody should have one of these, whether you make it yourself or by one's that's. The first thing we made because it is are my most important, most versatile tool. Next thing we made, where some of the flats the flat's white on one side, blacks on the other. Another very useful tool. Somebody that's really thank you that if you're in a big, small house or your garage cut it down you're not going to use all eight feet of it you can go ahead and cut it down a little bit um we're talking on the break lane said she has doors right like he's just playing doors closet doors were never use that air just solid white and sheep but some little hinges on it and made basically it was thinking about making after we talked about this making the flats from doors that that was kind of cool curtis you know why I got my phone core if you got doors and there for the lightweight enough that you can move him easily paint a nice bright white boom there you got perfect the flats and use the hinge you know, if you can hinge two doors together than they can open and close and stay together that would be awesome so I would use like a hollow core doors that air light enough to easily move and you might find those there's um there's a place in our town called it's like habitat gets a lot of their stuff there that they yeah it's just it's basic place where people donate building stuff that they don't use and you can buy doors and they're for pennies on the dollar and things like that would be a great place to go look for something like that tights li'l z out all kinds of good stuff there for chief all right, what's next then we could hold on it right, right, right, right and we shot through it this is our window to shoot through from this side to create this big soft light we bounced the flash from behind into the flat so danielle is sitting right here he smiling bounced the flash boom beautiful soft frontal light we also did a trife lecter which is around here somewhere too we took one of those v flats we cut it down and made a triple and this is really handy for when you're doing head shots so that we can put this underneath we're kinda it's like can uphold that on there he's gonna make a little light thing covered with silver if you want you could attach foil to this if you have oil you could attach that sober fabric that I have right there we showed earlier draped that over the front and if you find a way to prop this up on a stool or something and some stands in front of her sitting it makes a really nice you could get a tan actually this too outside but the silver on this we didn't get it to do this so we just did the white version but the silver creates has really sparkly catch light under the eyes and this is this is the way to go is a triple reflector bounces like right back up

Going into my 4th year of photography, I finally built a photo studio in my home and after purchasing some lighting gear and other accessories, I decided to buy this course for additional ideas - GREAT class! I learned a LOT and was very inspired to be more creative. I especially liked that Kevin didn't joke too much or stray away from the course very much at all. Yet, he was still very entertaining and very informative. I'm putting so much of what I got form this class into action right away! This course DEFINITELY pays for itself - right away!

F8 and be there

This was an awesome fun class! So many great ideas on how to achieve various lighting effects on a smaller budget. You will save the price of the course most likely by making one softbox (or whatever) yourself. Highly recommended!
