Mounting Switches
Okay, So sorry. I'm gonna have to use my handheld laptop for this one for this first part of this one. Anyway, don't worry. We'll get less shaking a minute. So here's what I need to do. I need to figure out where on this thing when I flip it over. Am I gonna put these switches now? You can see my little orange pieces, all my buttons and stuff that have all fallen out and they're stacked here on my desk. That's okay. I think I'll be able to put those back in just fine. I hope this orange one hasn't fallen out, but there's no reason it couldn't just push it out with my thumb. Let's get rid of that Because and the keyboard to, uh came out, and that's just fine. Those we're all gonna get in my way for a little bit. So if they easily come out and I could just wedge them back in, then I'm gonna take him out because I don't really care about them for the moment. So I think where I'm gonna try to put these two switches are here and here. These two spots and on the other side here and here, Rig...
ht? I could use this spot because this is nothing. I look at the other side of it. This is just a piece of plastic, so I could poke through their ah and put them, you know, around in that area. Or I could use the speaker. That's what I did on my other keyboard. I used the speaker that was in it where I took out the speaker and put the switches where the speakers were. But this will only really let me fit to, because they're kind of big and bulky, so that's not the best one for me. I'll leave the speaker intact and try to use these side areas. Now what? I need to dio look at the back and I need to find when the circuit board is in place when it's in there. Is there anything covering up those spot meaning when we put the whole thing back together? If I have switches in those spots, is it gonna push against the circuit board? That's what we don't want to do. So, uh, the only thing that could be in that spot is the is the board that controls the keyboard which is this long one, right? Because there's all the keys, the little rubber things. So I'm gonna do is I'm gonna measure this piece and see when it's in here. Is it longer than this opening? That's what I care about because if it's longer, it's gonna go into my spots where I'm gonna have the switches. So already did that, and it's not. It's actually shorter, which concerns me a little bit because that doesn't seem right, But it's a little bit shorter, so it will only come to about here and about here. So I should be free to use these two spots. I couldn't put it all together and figure that out before committing to it, but I like to live dangerously. So I was gonna do it. So I've made too little black marks here with just with a Sharpie with a pen. Um and that's where my holes we're gonna go now What? I need to dio on this switch. I need to make a hole big enough for this screw part to get through. Because I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take off this washer which I might need two hands to do Oh, I'm getting that going to take off this washer, okay? And now I'm gonna make a hole big enough to get through with this, and then I'm gonna put the washer back on on the outside, and that's gonna hold it nice and firm and in place. So if that was confusing, you'll see what I mean. I could actually take this on off peace out as well. Maybe I don't want the on off peace. Doesn't matter. I don't need it there. Cool. So I'm gonna make these holes. Now. The way I'm gonna make these holes is not the ideal way The way I do this is kind of dumb, but it works. I'm gonna take my cheap, sauntering iron that I showed you earlier. You'll notice that the end of this is all black and gnarly. Because when I use this for is to burn a hole through these spots. It smells terrible, gets burning plastic. It's probably not really good to breathe at all, but I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna try to do it quick, so I'm gonna try to burn a hole through these things and see what happens. Here we go. Okay. So I have a nice hole in there. Let's put that into focus. Focus. Here we go. So here's what I had to do. I had to poke my sauntering iron through there, and then I had to kind of weave it around in a circle toe, widen it out just a little bit more than the iron was wide. And then I had to destroy this thing on top of it a little bit because the block is actually of the thing goes just like that. And I needed a little bit more here and a little bit more here, so I just kind of widen those out of. The next thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna sand down the edges of this on the other side. Actually, I'm both sides so that because you can see there's a little bit of a lip from the burning and that's going to get in the way of that screw going down. They're nice and solid, so I'm just gonna sand those down a little bit. Eso that that's kind of smoothed on top and then hopefully I'll be able to get my switch right in there. So a little bit of sanding, and then I'll be back. Okay, so here's what it looks like. I've sanded off around the edges is to smooth that out a little bit. It's not beautiful, but it works. Um, and on the other side, I didn't do much standing on the other side because it was too hard to get down in there. And this is the inside, so I don't really care about what it looks like. All I really care about is if this switch is gonna be able to go through far enough for me to put that screw back on it, toe, hold it in place, and I think I'm gonna be able to do it. So let's try. Okay? Our first switch is mounted. Not too bad, right? Like it's on there nice and solid. I was able to get it through and get that washer just barely on because it's pretty thick casing. But it was able to get through when I got it on there. Just finger tightened this. I can tighten it a little more, uh, with a wrench if I want to. In the end, on the inside is what it looks like. There's are two connections and there's where it sits. I think it will be okay like that. So I'm going, Teoh, put the next four in their next three in there. I should say, uh, and get all my switches mounted. And then all we have to do is a wire him up and put everything back together. So I'll be back after I get the next four for three and stop. Okay, so here we are. Um, that switches are mounted. They look really nice, actually. Let's to there to there. I was able to get those in pretty much OK, the hardest one with that 1st 1 Um, but you two are just fine. Now you might be asking yourself which way is on and off. I'm just always just mount him in the same direction. So I've got the pins going down at the bottom of all of them. So whether or not up is on or down is up on, uh, they'll all be the same. So that's all I really care about for this. So the next step that I need to do is connect these switches to our dangling wires. The first thing I'm gonna do is put it back together. I'm gonna put everything back together as much as I can with still leaving me access to those dangling wires so I might hide the circuit board. I'm basically gonna go as far as I can before I cover up access to those switches. So I'm gonna start that right now and see how far I could get and then I'll jump back in.
