What Does Your Ugly Voice Say to You?
In your world book is a page of speech bubbles I think we're at a good point now of having kind of talked about it that surrounded a little bit. I want you to fill in those speech bubbles with what you are ugly voices to you. What does that voice in the back of your mind actually saying, open up the dam and let it come in and write it down? You do not need to believe it to write it down, you just need to write it down transcribe what that voice says, if you need more bubbles, you know, just stick them in, turn the page over, draw them in if you're ugly, voice is unoriginal and only says one thing over and over again, do it. There is no wrong answer just fill in those those speech bubbles. Kim, how long do want folks to be working on this for just a couple minutes? Okay, I think at this point, hopefully we've been hearing that voice for a while out clear shouldn't and folks at home hopefully you have we are workbook, downloaded, that's free when you are sleepy, what you can do one of co...
urse page, click on the link up above here again, we're going to be working with this workbook all day long so you can keep that going so cam, wall folks are working on this still and hopefully guys are writing down all about your ugly at home. I wanted to talk to you a little bit about your book, which is very exciting. Is this your first book? It's? My first book, that's not about crash a okay. All right, so this is that make it ugly book tell us about how you ended up writing this. I learned over the years that I worked through a lot of my own crap. I totally didn't use foul language there. I'm also going to pat myself on the back for that by writing on dh there were ideas related to mighty ugly, so I had been doing workshops I have had I started, I kind of ran my friends through a test mighty ugly worked up. I invited him over. I didn't tell them why. And then I made the ugly things like we did today, like that exact exercise and it was like simultaneously horrifying and freeing for them. They they everybody seemed ok about it. But I realized that there was something about this and I was thinking about it what's the whole deal here, and why am I so drawn to this? In a world that work in crafts? Crafts is beautiful, crown crafts is like perfectly styled beautifully, you know, lit gorgeous photography but like it's totally not like that in real life in real life we sit on our sort of secondhand sofa at home in front of the television and on afghans you know what I mean like so there is this disconnect and I was really interested in that and I wanted to work through it and so I started thinking that a book would be a fun way for me personally to work through it and also hopefully reach other people on dot is where the book came from and it is not focused on business so it's not a business oriented buckets a book about personal creative practice and how toe have to do it how to get from the I really love the idea of making things to just making them first of all congratulations on the book but also everybody can go teo kimmel worker dot com if you wantto see some more about bark and that's worker with an e yes you know there's no uh so lovely folks have finished their exercise by now so I back over okay thank you ok, so keep that ugly voice page we're going toe come down to it this was like a bookmark we're going to come back to it another time we're going to shift focus a little bit a little bit a little bit we're going to think about our creatures again and we're going to write a story so we've been doing a lot of thinking about this ugly voice, this is the thing, we cannot control it, it is just there we can decide whether we're going to listen to it, we can ask it to be quiet, it will always be there, by the way, it's not like a the end of this day, we will have vanquished it in our mind, will these silent in a way? It has never been that's, not the way creativity works, there is no end to it, you know, creative struggle, there's just getting better it, you know, kind of doing the struggle, so we're going to do some writing and again, and it doesn't matter. This is not about being a great writer, this is just about sort of allowing yourself to think in a way that you can make marks down on a piece of paper that you can look at later. So I'm assuming, and I have found in the past that a lot of the stuff that comes up today is stuff that needs to be chewed on, spit out and shoot him again in this kind of vicious cycle that's disgusting. Anyway, I'm gonna we're going to d'oh, we're going to tell a story, we're going to make up a story, so just like we just did pipe cleaner arts and craft for the first time? Probably in a couple of decades for most of us were going to write a story possibly for the first time in decades for many of us and it does not have to be the great american novel, but I want you to think about your ugly creature said it in front of you we're going to tell its story something that I was very interested in today. This is the first time I have ever, uh, taught this class where in going around in show intel except for I think one person online nobody said the name of their creature and that's unusual most like sometimes there's at least somebody who is like this is mathilde and this has been tell this whole story matilda grew up in a family of six I'm like there's, this whole thing and I was really surprised that that didn't happen today, but in a way I'm a kind of glad because if everybody is going to be starting from the same place, so I'm going to just kind of call out some prompts and if you feel the need to keep writing, then please do keep writing what's your creatures name what kind of place does your creature living? Where does it sleep, who is its best friend in the quiet of the night? What frightens it at the end of a long day when it looks up what does it see its greatest hope in all the world is for when it thinks back to a long, long time ago it wishes it could do this one thing differently when you're ready to finish up keep writing if you're still writing take a look that something on your creature that's not a part of its body but something is wearing I'm gonna snag this my my colleague leann crane wrote a book about storytelling through textile and she did this amazing exercise with writing prompts that like blew my mind once and I'm gonna I didn't talk to her about this beforehand I hope she's okay with this but I'm gonna something that she asked people to do it's a little bit different but take a look at something that's on your creature that it it put on you know something that's not like a part of its physiology write down how did that creature get that thing where did that thing come from what makes it ugly what at what about it adds to the creature's ugliness but tell me the story of that object it's pretty different blood leanne had us do but I was thinking of her when I came up with that tell me the story of the object that creature deliberately put it on an accessory is it given as a gift? Is it awarded a demerit of some sort

I listened to the entire course. I think that Kim is very inspiring and that she uses stories effectively. I do think that she needs to have the audience wear name tags and use their names when she is talking to them. It helps me the viewer feel a connection with the studio audience. I made my ugly creature. I am a graphic/interior designer. I know that ugly items are needed at times to make things beautiful, so my creature actually looks cute to me. I wished that less time was used on the ugly creature discussions and more time getting to the core of what is holding us back. Designers are visual producers so our work is always under scrutiny, and it is good to see what other designers are fearing, but solutions is what I wanted to get to rather than trying to identify what is holding me back. I hope that future videos by Kim will address the solutions and use less of the ugly theme so as to work on gaining insight as to how to overcome negativity about growing our businesses.
