Apply Black & White Filters
Let's go back to this image and let's explore if we wanted to make it black and white. I showed you that there is this saturation slider that you can do over here but you'll notice it leaves the image a little bit flat. And by flat I mean that the shadows are not dramatically shadowy if that's a phrase I can make use of. And the highlights are not popping either it's kind of flat. If we imagine that histogram that I showed you earlier it wouldn't have a lot of peaks and valleys going on because there's not a ton of contrast here. So I think that that can have a little more contrast. So I'm gonna revert this. And instead of dealing with any of these type of things I'm gonna pop over to the effects tab quickly. I have to wait a minute for this to render. Somehow, because that's sticky I reapplied it again. Okay, so when you click on the effects tab from adjustments you'll notice it takes a minute because it's rendering all these effects dynamically for you so you can get sort of a previe...
w of what that effect would look like. And if we come down a ways you'll notice that there's a black and white option. If we click that, whether we click the arrow or the thumbnail, same thing's gonna happen which is it will apply one of the black and white effects but then you'll also notice that this little drawer opens up and we see that there are four other black and white versions that we could apply. If we wanna see what this one is I can hover my cursor and a little tag pops up and tells me that's the silver effect. So if I click that we see a small adjustment that was made. I think that looks pretty nice. Let's see what this one is. This is called old school so yet a different one. The difference is pretty subtle so if you are watching at home on a monitor you might be thinking, "I don't see a huge difference." They're not huge, there's some like for example in this one if we hover over it this one's called what is this called platinum. This effect includes a vignette around the corners so it has darkened edges whereas the other black and white presets do not. This one includes, it's called tinted black, it's almost a bit sepia really, this one includes a tint so it's a little bit of a yellowy, old fashioned old timey kind of an effect. So it's just you know a matter of preference you can just click around. You do have to be a little patient because it renders the whole effect and that can take a moment. But that's a good place to look for black and white. If you like black and white these provide some nice options. Let's go back to our organizer and grab a couple of other images quickly. We're gonna grab to do two more examples here. Go to our practice files and we're gonna get this picture of this cat and I'm gonna hold down the command or control key and I'm gonna add this sunset picture to include both of these and one more also, two more I like. This picture here of my little nephew and this cat. So we'll get all of those open in the editor by clicking edit now. So it's gonna prepare all those files we can see them down here in this photo bin.

Just watching this class live. It's my first class with Khara; she is a wonderful teacher, moving at a steady speed but always being careful to let us know what she's doing in the moment. I would classify myself as intermediate in terms of PSE but I've learned lots of little things that will make further use even easier and more fun. I really appreciated her descriptions of the difference between PS and PSE and her encouragement in using Photoshop Elements and all that it can do.

I have only been able to watch portions of this class but every single part that I have watched has been technically clear and inspiring to me. Based on this experience and the thorough, 58 item list of lessons, I will surely be buying this class soon! Thank you Khara and Creativelive for making a class on this topic and making it be super!!
