Reviewing Your Files

Now that I've got that. This is basically your way to work on the hard drive. So this is the computer. You can do this from your phone or you can do this from your iPad or whatever. But if you want to actually start looking at the files there's a whole different application called Selects. So I'm gonna open up Selects. Looks the same. It's connecting to the GNARBOX. I'm gonna click on the GNARBOX. And this time I'm gonna go in an select these. And it says open a workspace. So I'm gonna go ahead and open a workspace. And what it's doing is it's taking all the images and it's putting 'em into basically, there we go. So it's just a selection application. The great thing is that the underline technology for it is drawn from well, there's Lightroom, everybody uses Lightroom, right. Then there's a whole contingent of people who swear that Photo Mechanic is the thing to select, right. This is actually Photo Mechanic that's running this. ually running this application. So, all I need to do now is just simply go through I'm gonna start right about here. I just touch either side. If I touch the right, it's gonna go to the right. If I touch left, it's gonna go to the left. I just kinda go through and look for the photos. So, if I like that one I'm gonna give it a star. Just keep moving through 'em. So, this is all happening here on the GNARBOX. It's not taking up space on my hard drive or on my flash memory inside of my iPad. So, I'm just looking for photos that I want to bring in. I'm gonna bring in these photos because they show the lighting scenario. I like that one. So, I'm just looking for photos that would be of value to me. I like that one. So then, I'm gonna go back. I'm gonna skip forward 'cause there was some really fun, there we go, right here I started seeing. Okay, so this is some of the travel stuff. I did some long exposures that I liked. The one downside to working here inside of this Selects app is that you can't zoom in and see the full file. 'Cause it's working from the embedded preview that's inside of the raw file. So, it's not building its own, that why it's so fast. Generally speaking, if you see two or three imagines and you're not sure if ones sharp or if ones not, you just need to select 'em all. I would go through, and oh, that's interesting. See those guys down there at the. And then, it got better, because I was the one shooting, I know that later on there are some files. Where are you files Keep comin'. I went to the other side of that tree to shoot. There we go, I'm getting there. There! I went to the other side to shoot that same tree. And see how that ones blurry. I must of pumped it during the timed exposure. I'm gonna chose a couple of these tree shots here. There we go. I don't know which ones are gonna pan out the best. So, I'm selecting quite a few of them. But once I get to Lightroom then I'll be sure about it. So, now that I'm done I'm gonna hit the save button. Right now all of the information that I just put is right here. These tags are inside of the software. But, if I hit save it's actually gonna save all of the metadata out to the actual existing photos. Now the photos themselves have the information on them. Now I can go back and say I wanna sort these and I wanna sort 'em by rating, oops. Now that I've sorted 'em by rating you can see that I've got several up here that are rated as one star and two star. You have a choice now, do I want to bring in everything I shot. Now, this is a very small amount of images, it wouldn't take very long to bring it in. It's not gonna store up a lot of space on a iPad. But, if you shot for five or six days and you're pulling in all that information you might fill up your iPad. The idea is that, because the GNARBOX is it's own hard drive and because the GNARBOX can actually duplicate itself on to a secondary hard drive you don't necessarily have to bring it into your iPad to store it another time. But, I wanna work on some files. So what I'm gonna do now, is I got chose whether I'm bringing everything in and if I'm gonna do that it's really easy to do I'll show you how to do that. If I'm not, if I wanna just bring in the ones that I've selected. So, I went through the selection say on a airplane or a taxi ride or whatever I went through and selected all of the images that I want to look at and work on. All I need to do it hit the select button over on the right hand side. I can go in select all of those two stars. See how it just selected 'em all. And then I can also select all of the one stars. Now, once I've selected all of those. Now, I am going to hit export, and I'm gonna tell it where I want to put it. I'm just gonna put it in the same folder but I'm gonna create a new folder. We're gonna call that Selects, hit done. Go into the Selects folder and save 'em there. What it's doing is it's taking all the selections that I made and it's taking 'em and moving 'em into a folder called Selects. Now, I have this entire set of photos available to me. If I were to then take this back home and plug it in as a hard drive to my main computer. Let's say I didn't even work on 'em while I was on the road. All of my selects would be in one folder to import into Lightroom at home, because this just becomes a hard drive and you'll see each days set of photos in those folders and then you'll see a Selects folder. That's really useful if you're just gonna go straight home and start working on 'em. But, we're still gonna be on the road for the next week and a half and we wanna share some images. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna go to Lightroom, which is my favorite place to be. Inside of Lightroom I need to setup some general ideas and rules just so that we're all aware of this. When we're traveling I want you to setup your Lightroom the way I'm telling you now. Go over to the right hand side you'll see these little three dots. You'll go to the settings which is down at the bottom of that menu. Then, in here you're going to go up to, and first off let me make sure that I show touches so that you can see what I'm actually doing. There the little red dot will show. What you're gonna do, is you're gonna make sure, and here's some settings that you need know about for Lightroom. You need to know cloud storage. You need to make sure that you know whether or not you're using cell data, 'cause if you're gonna start uploading stuff you better not use cell data if you're traveling in Europe or something. 'Cause you're gonna get dinged real fast. Make sure you're one WiFi only if you're doing the kind of thing. I'm gonna use cell data because I have an unlimited cell data plan here in the US but not somewhere else. The other thing that you wanna do is on import. When you're importing, see this at the top auto add from camera roll, right here, you need to turn photos on. Now, video you can auto add video as well but I don't really look at videos inside of Lightroom on my mobile device and I don't shoot a lot of 'em. So, I'm not gonna keep that on. Photos will automatically add. So, any photos that get added into your iPad automatically get add into Lightroom. That way if I'm working on the GNARBOX and taking pictures and stuff like that, but I happen to pull out my phone and I take picture with my phone I want that to go to the same place that all the GNARBOX images are gonna go. So, that they all get collected together and sent up to the cloud together and brought down. Make sure you're setting up your phone settings the same way you set up this. All of your collections or your albums from your phone and your iPad they'll all synchronize acrossed. Just set them up the same, so that anything that you bring in from the GNARBOX here will automatically go into this specific folder and anything on your phone will go to that same specific folder. So, it all joins together. That's just important to have. Also, you'll want to be aware that there are the sharing options here. You want to make sure that you setup these metadata options the way you want them. Do you want to include metadata when you're sharing these images. Do you want to include captions, camera information, and location information. If you're shooting stuff of you're kids on your phone it's tagging your location. If you share that information without turning off that location information it's sharing that to the world. If you take a lot of pictures in your house with your kids those photos that are out there on Facebook have location information that anybody can grab and find where you live and find out, oh, those kids live in this house blah, blah, blah. Sames true if you have GPS on your phone. That always should be off. You should never share the location information unless you're specifically saying, hey, this is where this iceberg is in Iceland or whatever. That's the only reason you should ever share location information. Those are somethings you should pay attention to. What we're gonna do, is we're gonna go to this My Trip option, right here. This is My Trip, this I what I setup. I setup a little collection or a what we call a album here in our Lightroom mobile. I'm gonna click on it. And notice that it says auto add from camera roll. Everything that gets shot on my phone or added to the iPad or the phone on it's own. If I were to plug in a card directly into Lightroom here anything that goes in would automatically go to this specific album. It just kinda targets everything to one place. By the way, if you're going to, let's say you're working on some files and you wanna do it on an airplane where you're not gonna have access to the web this is where you would also say store locally. If you store something locally it takes anything that's in the cloud and it makes sure that you have resident copy of it. So that if you have connection to the internet you could still work on the files. 'Cause otherwise it calls the cloud quite a bit looking for things. Here we are, we're in My Trip. I'm gonna click on this little plus button down here. See right there, that little plus button. This little plus button right next to the camera I can either shoot something by clicking the camera in the bottom right corner or I can click the plus button. Instead of saying from camera roll I'm gonna say from files. Once I'm in my files here then I'm going to look for Safekeep. See that little Safekeep app right there it's kind of in the middle. I'm gonna click on that. Notice that the file structures the same. I'm gonna go in, go into the GNARBOX. There's my Selects folder. Click on the Selects folder. There's all the photos that I selected. I'm gonna select all. And notice that it also has some these little extra files here. Those little extra files are the X and P data. That's what tells us this is a select and this is a reject and blah, blah, blah. So, I'm selecting all of out selects and I'm gonna hit open. And it is bringing from here via the WiFi network it's bringing it into my application here. You can see it's startin' to come in right now. Now, the entire raw file is here, it's on my cards. It's now inside of my iPad. it's immediately you can see up on the top right hand corner that little cloud has dots moving, it's loading it up to the cloud now. Everything's going from here up to the cloud. I'll have a full resolution copy in the cloud. And it's on its way back down to Lightroom Classic at the desktop computer at home. And if the desktop computer at home is not available or your desktop computer happens to be this, which shouldn't be with you, right. This just happens to be here 'cause I teach here. If it's closed at home you can simply open it up and when you open it up it'll start synchronizing down. All of our photos are in. Now, the fun really begins we get to start editing these photos. We have just gone through the entire work flow of backing everything up and making sure you're completely secure. And all it took was this which fits in your bag pretty much anywhere. And this, which is super thin and can fit right in the top of you bag. We can go traveling anywhere in the world and look at our photos, work on photos, secure our photos just like that. 'Cause the future's here now. This is the kind of work flow I've wanted for 10 years while I've been traveling. 'cause there's always that extra weight of a computer and hard drives and cords and whatever. Now, it's just an iPad and a little disk drive. That's it.
