Finishing Techniques
When you're ever creating an image and you think you're done, you might not be done if you think you're done first off when you're creating a new document, I mentioned that I'd show you this and I didn't see other day and it asked you for a resolution setting these are the ranges that I suggest if you go any lower than these numbers for these purposes, then you confined thatyou're images look jaggi, they look pixelated, they look like you can tell they're made out of squares. Hey, if you go any higher than this, then you will find that sharpening is less effective and your file size is much bigger than you need, but within that range you're fine then if you have an image and you're going to send it out to be printed, if it's going to be printed on a printing press, when you create a new document, if that's how you create it and you type in your size, you come in here inches and let's say it's eight by ten if you're going to print on a printing press and I do mean printing press, I don'...
t mean any other kind of printing, then they usually want your document to actually be bigger that's what's known as bleed. And so bleed is where they're going to trim away some of the paper and they need to make sure your picture doesn't stop right where they're supposed to trim. So if there's a little spit off on their trimming, they would miss and have a little white gap so usually want to come in here and choose canvas size in add some extra space if you turn on this check box called relatives if that means add the amount of space I type in right now to whatever size already have. So if you ask the company that's going to print your image how much bleed they want that means extra space they want you could put it in here or you could just guesstimate you don't need a lot, but if you put like a quarter inch something like that the minimum he's going to make it so if they end up cropping things away, they're not they're going to be a little extra picture for them to cut so it's just one thing that talk about if you're going to be printing and then the final final thing is on ly after you resize your image to its final size and that means going to the image menu and choosing image size in here thinking about how big will this image be printed you're about to print it? How big will be printed type in the numbers here of how big it will be printed so if I'm only going to use this is an eight by ten or something's near that size or in this case a ten by six scale it to its final size and then it's a one final step sharpen it usually I use smart sharpen if it's for most images and in here you want to sharpen it if it's for on screen use until this preview looks good if it's for printing you wanted a little sharper and that but what happens if his for a printing press? What I would do is zoom out here to about fifty percent view in sharpen it when you're viewing it at that size, the amount controls how much contrast you're adding much sharpening your adding and the radius controls how wide oven area it applies that too, so this ends up adding little halos to your picture little like brighter or darker lines around the edges of objects. And if you end up with this radius to high, you're going to end up being to see them if you've ever seen a white line around the edge of a mountain where it touches the sky it's because this radius settings to I so you khun looking damage but view it about fifty percent for you if you're going to be pretty not a printing press and then adjust it until you like that so there's just a few things to think about if you know you're going to prep them uh to send off to some other people is if it's on a printing press ask about bleed because if you don't have bleeding near image then it means they might cut off the the paper just a little bit beyond where your photo was supposed to end and that it's a hell of a white cap that's only for photos that extend all the way out to the edge of the shooting paper uh in only sharpen your image after you scale it down to the size you're going to print it out because what happens is if you don't scale it down first to this final size or up that you're going to print it too then the sharp is less effective the printer ends up scaling it down in the little sharpening which is might be one pixel wide is minimized so much that you might not even be able to tell you sharpened it so scaled down to the final size first all right so we've been here for three full days three full days on the first day we learned how to adjust her pictures way used one thing a lot we even used it so much for use it on the second and the third day too camera because you can never under emphasize how much power is in that thing then on the second day we talked about layers because layers air a fundamental part of photo shop and that makes it so that what we do is not permanent. The original image is always a bottom. We build everything on top of that and it makes it so. We have a lot of versatility. Then today we couldn't stop gaining in the camera, but we also got into retouching some creative effects. So hopefully this is a good level for us to get started with. So final questions possibly or wrap up, I want you to talk a little bit more about the workbook that your wife's putting together. We have a couple questions about that. What is that? I wish we had an example of it right now. But what is that look like? We usually do have an example. I know you don't know. Well, what happened, karan. This is frantically watching as we're doing this and she's used to hearing me speak. So she's seen me do it like thirty times and she's usedto what I teach. So she documents it she's trying to write down these techniques in a way where you can reproduce them if you try to read what she had, it will give you the gist of what we did because it's not always convenient to have tto watch an entire video to reproduce the technique it's often more convenient to have a sheet of paper you have your finger on, we're like okay just did the step what's the next one you glance down it's more convenient to see the video for the original in introduction I think for the first day when we were halfway done, karen told me that she had over twenty pages in the handbook if I remember correctly and so it is a relatively extensive thing if there are keyboard truck it's I mentioned she tries to get him in otherwise she'll tell you the men used to go to and all that she puts pictures in oftentimes the pictures that I used during this yeah otherwise if she has a better picture, she might use one of her own but it's usually a great resource it's a pdf and it's pretty darn long also with the purchase of the course you get ninety eight point six percent of all the images that I adjusted or used on occasion there's like one picture I can't give away for a particular reason that's why I say most but if I didn't open the picture if I never actually did anything to it you don't get it is if I ever opened it and did anything to it it comes with the course for you to practice with and uh yeah the handbook is really good it's fantastic. So if you have questions about that too I know we had some questions in the chat room and want not about how people actually who have purchase the course already actually get the handbook the handbook like ben said we'll take maybe a week teo finish up and then it will end up in your my courses area if you've purchased the course already um it'll just be there along with all the videos that are listed and and the picture downloads so it's all in one place and you're my courses also I should mention the pictures taken you have about two days for me to took up because what happens? I'll fly home in the morning and you know I have to make sure I organized them all and get him already for us about two days and you get the images and then within a week you get the handbook awesome sounds good it's been amazing three days like I keep saying because it has been amazing and we have a whole bunch of people that we need to thank those that make these amazing broadcast possible first the creative live audience thank you so much to each one of you for tuning in joining us, paying attention and learning right along side everyone here in the in studio audience we have the creative live crew everybody back in the booth our producers that make these broadcasts so good so smooth and they're just really, really awesome toa work with is well in addition to that thanks to thee in studio audience thanks to each one of you for being here we really appreciate it it's a joy to have you here and karen will more for putting together the phenomenal workbook that goes along with this course you get it if you upgrade any time access it's a beautiful book I've seen some of her work before she doesn't wonderful job with that such special things to her and last but not least ben thank you so much for coming giving the last three days of your life to just sharing all your secrets that you've learned over the last however long you've been doing this how long have you been doing this? Uh jeez I don't know of over twenty years I think yeah. Hall of famer photoshopped hall of fame that's right and some people even think that I have a tattoo eagle holding a wacom pen on my arm if anybody happens to think that that tattoo was a ballpoint pen tattoo third day always funny is the crew that runs this I learned today that they were under the impression. I had a tattoo on my arm. Oven eagle holding up graphics, tablet, tenant, say, want come on the wild side alone. I had said tattoo for one day. It was made with a bum point. That is funny. That is funny.

Ben, thanks again for this course. I have taken and purchased quite a few of your courses to date. I keep thinking I will only watch to make sure I am on the right track and you always bring more to the table than the last course. Your teaching methods are the best, sorry to all the other instructors from Creative Live, but you are very easy to understand and you speak in layman's terms so we all can understand. I am following your instructions and working along with your files and it is the best! It is hard to keep up with you even when I watch you on one computer and work with the same files on another computer, to do what you are doing...impossible but I gain so much by trying. You provide so much info on each topic, it is amazing. Thanks to Karen for the PDFs, she does a fantastic job and also, for her templates/layout documents. Thanks again and to anyone who thinks this is too much money for all the videos, the exercise files and the instruction PDF, I am sorry to say but you are mistaken.

Like all of the Creative Live courses, excellent training. Ben does a great job of explaining the entry part of Photoshop. A lot of things cleared up in my head and i like his easy pace into this complex program. Thanks Ben.

I had several "lightbulb" moments with this class, after many years of photography and when you think you know it all, you don't :) Ben Willmore is an excellent tutor, with his many years of experience teaching PS, he obviously knows the types of things a lot of us struggle to understand. I learnt a lot about Bridge, and have since implemented these things into my everyday workflow, so much easier to sort out what I want to keep etc.. Thanks so much Ben and Creative Live. Thanks also to Ben's wife for her amazing work creating the Guide etc. Even though being in Australia, I pay more for the courses (the conversion rate, the aussie dollar is low at the moment) it's very worth it to me. I have paid more for courses here, and learnt next to nothing. Thanks again.
