Movies and Poster Image Thumbnail
Let's drop a bit more attention on this movie. Now, what I'm gonna do, here, because this isn't the real layout, is I'm just gonna move my fake dialogue, here, down to the bottom, there, right? So it's out of the way of the movie. In fact, I think I'll move all of these things underneath. Here like so. Okay and we'll dig in, excuse me, we'll dig into to the movie and the poster, so. At the moment, we're just seeing this as default, okay, inside the editing environment and when we play it, of course, we see the first frame of the movie, like so, but what if you don't want to show that? What if you want to show some alternate content, here? I'm just gonna change the size of the frame slightly right there so it's not interfering with that navigation element. In fact, if I do that and hold down the alt or option key while I do it, it'll actually change the other side at the same time. We'll do that about the center, like so. So nice idea, there. Now we're going to visit the media panel, ok...
ay, which is sort of the ultimate panel that we're going to be visiting in our little journey through this, here. So if we click for media, this actually shows us the movie and we can scrub through the movie, here, if we want to. So we can go to certain points within it. We can actually play it but I'm not gonna play that audio over the top. That's quite a nice, engaging frame, there. I think I kinda like that. Yeah, it's a bit, bit interesting to look at. Let's have a look at it compared to the beginning. Where abouts is that? That's at 30 seconds, let's go back to the beginning. Yeah, that's a way, way better frame. It wasn't at 30 seconds, it was, sorry I was reading the total duration of the movie. It was around about here, I think. Yeah, that's good. I like that. So let's see what the options we've got here, right? So we can play this on page load. Like I said, if it's something that you're expecting users to navigate to via another means, so they can't get to it from going to page to page, they make a choice to see it, yeah? So you might say click here to watch the movie on how to create, how to show and hide buttons in InDesign, right? (laughing) With me, great. You might do that and if they click on that, they would be expected to be transported to that content and not to wait for that content. I don't know about you but I always find it a bit rude, and sometimes quite alarming and intrusive, when I click on a webpage and a video starts playing automatically, when I don't even know there's a video there. I might be watching it while my cat's taking a nap. Might wake him up. I don't wanna do that. Yeah, just, you know. Alright, funny scenario but you get it. Yeah so there are times when you might want to use that. I'm not going to use it, here. Looping. We'll disregard except PDF because for us, of course, PDF doesn't really count, here. I'm not saying this is a dead vehicle but I'm just saying, it's not a really modern interactive vehicle. Looping depends on your content. I can't think of many things that you need to actually loop on there but you may have something from there. The next bit is poster, okay, and if I click that, you can see that I get a few options, here. So I've got standard, okay. That means it's going to be from, usually from the first frame of the movie. You can also choose from current frame and if I choose that, okay, you can see that it actually shows us that preview inside of InDesign. Alright, so we can see that straight away just there. If you change your mind and you determine that you actually want another frame, so I'm gonna click further on in the timeline. Let's say I want that frame. All you need to do is click this little refresh arrow, here, right, and it will update the movie poster like so. So if I come back to about here. Just a tiny smidgen to the left of there and hit refresh. You can see it changes that, nice and easy to do. If I just twirl that open again, you've also got the option to choose an image. So if I do that, it will open up my finder or explorer, okay, and I can go into one of these folders. So let's just see, here, I should have a little PNG just there, so Ninja Pirate Mularkey!, in case you're thinking where's the ninja, I'm the ninja. Yeah, so (laughing) and the pirate's on the screen. I'm also the pirate, so win-win as far as I'm concerned. Now, that's just parked in the top corner just there. It's just the way that's working. All that needs to be is fitted to the frame. Now, there's a few different ways you can actually do that, okay, and the easiest way at the moment is perhaps to go here to fitting, okay, and what I'm going to do is say fill the frame proportionally. So it will make sure, that's not actually working. Interesting, okay. So it's because it's an interactive layer, in there. So here's how to actually do that. You actually need to double click into there, I think, to get that, there you go, single click on the... The donut thing, the content grabber. I'm gonna hold down shift, drag outwards like so until it meets those dimensions and I'm just holding down shift now to multiply the movement by 10, and then just moving that to the left using the arrows on my keyboard. That's the most reliable way for me to move it. So now, I've got that poster in place just there. Let's test that because we've done a couple of changes to the layout just there. There's Ninja Pirate Mularkey! with that controller underneath. Now, interestingly, it's actually still showing me a controller here in this environment. Now, it might not actually do that on publish. It might actually just show me the movie and it might be doing it just in this window for convenience because remember, it's the EPUB Interactivity Preview, so it might be doing something different. Typically in the media panel, when you've got a piece of media selected, you've got the option here for controller and then all of these things are flash, so you can just ignore those. It's normally just a different skin, here. Actually, they might work, they're not actually marked as being flash but there you go. It's got those things there. An interesting thing that you might do otherwise, as well, is to add navigation points. Now, let me just show you how that works. You might want to go to a particular part of a movie. Let's just go to here. In fact, if I play it from about here. Bizemes and phonemes, but now I just hear searching for crabs. Searching for crabs. There you go, so I'm gonna wind that back. I'm gonna tap here, okay, to add a navigation point like so. Alright, I'm gonna call that, I'm gonna call it crabs because that's what he's doing there, searching for crabs. Crabs like so. So I've got a navigation point. I've added a component to the movie, right, on top of there that allows me to go to a specific point. Let's just do a very, very quick, if I close the EPUB panel just there. Let's just drop, I'll change the nature of this play button because how many play buttons do we actually need on here? Okay, I'm gonna change that. Go to buttons and forms. I'm going to change this action, okay, from play to play from navigation point. There's only one, so it's highlighting that particular one, there. Let's go to the EPUB Interactivity. Okay, so I'm still with the whole movies and posters thing. There it is, there, so if I hit that one. Searching for crabs, and fish, and stones. Searching for crabs. What am I on? Alright, (laughing) so there you go. That's how I can add a different poster to the movie, change the way that actually looks, theoretically change the controller. Okay. To see how that looks and let's test out the theory, here. What we're going to do at this stage, just before we move on to making different hyperlinks inside of the file, is we're actually going to publish this at this stage so you can see it. Okay and we can see what happens with the controller because at the moment, it's specified for none. My theory is that it's got something to do with the EPUB Interactivity there. They're showing me a controller so I can work with it. So this is the bit where we can publish our actual project. Now, we're not finished with it, yet. We can always refresh it and update it later on, but you go to the same place, which is this button, here, publish online, and if you click that, you get this publish your document online.
