Getting Started: Make Your Podcast Standout
I want to talk about getting started, so podcasting is right for you. I want to start thinking about this because I think a lot of people say I want to do a podcast because it's cool because everyone's doing it because it's in the media right now cereals out all these different things, but they don't understand why they want to create it, but understand if they're going to be committed to it for a long term or not. And for me, I just want you guys to take inventory that this is a lot of work, that it takes a lot of time to get to a specific level if you want to be the number one health podcast in the world it's gonna take time, energy a lot of hustle, it just doesn't happen overnight unless you have a huge audience already, which I'm assuming you don't have that yet, right? So unless you're a huge audience, we got a big email list. I'm talking like a million people in your audience size it's gonna be tough to get to the top, it's really challenging to make a lot of money upfront if you...
're just starting out, so I want you guys to just think about this and be aware of it. Okay nothing is not possible I started out with a smaller audience very much much smaller audience what I have now and I went into it saying I'm gonna do this for one year and I'm gonna see what happens I didn't have an idea if it was gonna work I was like I don't want to make any money but I want to do it for one year and see what I can create and then I'm gonna re evaluated so that's what I went into it with and I realize that you've got to be very consistent overtime to make it successful for yourself otherwise you're gonna get burnt out I want you guys to have that back your head so getting started um ways to make your podcast stand out you guys feel free to take some notes down these you want everyone watching at home this is some of the basic stuff for those that don't have a podcast you wanna make your title is really on points you want to think about your title I want to do some exercises throughout that have you go through this I think in your workbook we've got some things you can write down there so I don't really think about your title and stand out for me when I started doing the title game I was thinking about calling it the lewis house show some business type of show and I was just like you know what? What's something I could be proud of talking about two three years down the line if I want to continue doing this what's something that I'm going to be excited to talk about for me I just like business by itself wasn't interesting enough and so I came up with the school of greatness because I really wanted to be able to make it broader want to talk about any type of topic interview any type of person not just business related now some people say it's really good to to find the nation just cover health and fitness and that's what you want to do you should do that but for me I didn't want to just be in a niche I wanted to broaden it which is a lot harder to do I think but that's where I was coming from so think about your title option if you want to have your name in it if you want to create a new name if you wanted to be brought if you wanna be narrow focused so I want to think about that um you know what do you call yourself you know you've got to say about your own name you have a pen name they're gonna have no host name no some people just call it you know like the moth right or whatever the moth is just like a show hosted by nobody it's just like interviews from from random people um then an itunes category so when you're uploading toe itunes is the main platform you want to be on this is where the most traffic has generated probably eighty percent of my views come from people finding it in itunes on their phone on itunes, the podcast at things like that there's other absolute stitcher and things like that but there's different categories and you can choose up to three you want to think about it from the health and fitness space you don't want to be in the middle children's reading or something you know whatever it is so you don't want to make sure you find the right categories for yourself and those top three categories um so you can really optimize what you're doing so you know, I've got the school of greatest with louis house I've got my description here which goes a little bit more into what the episode is you can see that it's in the self help category underneath the health category um health is the main category the self help is the next category that it goes into so there's different categories you can be in and getting started you guys heard uh we're gonna have an example here in a second we'll talk about a bumper intro clip I think you're about to hear it, but I like to have an intro before my podcast episode goes lives you have heard me record something right there but I usually will put music and a little fifteen to twenty second bumper just to kind of get people feeling like this is production value david you're probably familiar with this like creating great production value you want to make you stay with your brother your your brother in law you want to help him like make it better we're talking about making the production value is greatest possible and creating consistency so I'd like to have consistency though people have a familiarity with my brand when they listen to the podcast it's like oh I know this intro bumper I know it's about to come it's like a comfort level that you create so you want to create ah bumper intro clip is what I recommend and you can do this by uh by recording it finding music online I found the music for twenty bucks that who was it uh did you say it was that you said uh where'd you find aaron said you know where did you find that music to someone record that did you like hire someone and I was like no I spent twenty bucks on it um so there's different audio sites you can download music I think audio jungle dot com is where I got mine for again twenty bucks from music for the podcast artwork you want to have a nice looking image so I show you all go back here and show you this was you know, the image I created I remember when I launched my podcast I got this for free I just asked my audience on facebook I said, hey, what should my podcast image look like my artwork and then I had like fifty people submit designs and I was like, oh, this is pretty sweet that he created a logo on them and I was like, he's going to call the school of greatness hears my idea for it created a logo put my picture on there my name I was like, cool, awesome let's do it so I asked my audience to create it for me I was like what resembles the school of greatness but you can use five or dot com or different sides to create something very simple nineteen and designs for a hundred bucks or something. Um you wanna talk about the description again? I show the description for me away we've got an audio clip way. Welcome to the school of greatness. My name is louis howe is a former pro athlete turned lifestyle entrepreneur, and each week we bring you an inspiring person or message to help you discover how to unlock your inner greatness. Thanks for spending some time with me today. Now let class begin that is my intro music again twenty dollar music sounds pretty clean right? Sounds nice um and then I did a little whatever fifteen second intro just explaining what this is, what you're gonna get out of it, who I am. So people, when they come for the first time, they understand it, you're not just diving right into all right. Let's, get into the interview with so and so well, what is this? Who are you what's the podcast about, you know, a lot of people e mail me, um, different testimonials, how much they appreciate the podcast school greatness, I say, how did you find in the first place? And a lot of people say through itunes, just searching an itunes I just saw your podcast clicked it, and then I listened and if that's the case where a lot of people are discovering it through itunes, they don't know a recommendation about you, they don't know their friend gonna promote it. Then you want to make sure you set yourself up for success, that they'll listen the whole time that will subscribe. And then they'll promote it, hopefully, and it goes from there, so I create that little intro, uh, music right there. And you know, that that's the first impression when people see you want to make sure that the photos and I will make sure everything looks great, it's unified and the description tells people exactly what they were about to get. Instead of making it your bio on the description on itunes, you really want to tell people what they're going to get. What they gonna learn, who you've had on. The biggest takeaway is the biggest lessons. What you're offering to the listener and be sure to enclose include the social proof so you can talk about where you've been featured, the big names that you've had on some of the big possible podcasters will say, you know, we've had tim farriss and jack canfield always other people on. They'll talk about the big names, so it's, okay, if they've got big names on in the description that it must be credible. So you want to build credibility throughout the entire experience. When people come to hear about you and keep it, keep it tight and and focus, don't don't just go on forever any description, keep it really tight and focused.

Wow! This was the first time I watched a tutorial in this format - and LOOOOVE It - The audience was great , love the interactive format and the small group , because everyone gets better interaction face time with the instructor . Of course , I love anything that Lewis does- and would love to thank him and Creative Live for the free month we received as a gift at the Summit of Greatness 2018. Also, before this I actually never heard of Creative Live, so I am grateful to have found out about you guys. Absolutely EXCELLENT Creative Live course. It's funny because I was going through some old emails and I found a promo email to this course when Lewis was first promoting it. I missed out on it the first go around and so seeing this email made me curious if it was still being offered, and it was! I purchased it and went through it in two days (it would have been one day but I had other work to get done :-) Lewis is so amazing as an instructor, I really love how he gives great insight but doesn't see anything as being a "secret". He's all about getting things done through hard work and simply experimenting. He truly shares all in this course! If you are familiar with the podcasting world to some extent and are curious as to how to monetize your podcast, this is for you! Take it and enjoy! -JT
