Understanding What You Want
All right, so the biggest question to ask yourself when going into van life is what do you expect? What do you want to get out of van life? You know, for me, I was a photographer. I wanted to be able to live more comfortably and longer amounts of time out in the middle of nowhere so that I could be close to the, the photo ops. Right. That was my, that was my hope. When I got into van life was that it would enable me to get better photos, to stay out longer, to wait out conditions, things like that. You know, I know some people that just want to save money on rent and that's cool too, or maybe you're retired and you want to see all the national parks. I don't know, there's, there's so many different reasons to get into van life. The more mental preparation that you put into designing the van the more it's gonna feel like a home to you. And it will be that much more satisfying when you step in. That, you know, that every single placement of storage every single use of space really came f...
rom your brain. You designed it, it's for you. And it's so much easier to get excited about your build. When you put that much more of yourself into the design. Really building and designing a van is just a long string of making decisions. And it helps me to simplify those decisions sometimes into a game of would you rather. So are you a weekend warrior or are you living in the van full time? So when you're in the van, are you getting away from your work, or are you bringing your work with you? So if you're working on the road, are you gonna wanna work inside of your van or would you rather just stop at a coffee shop? Are you trying to meet people while you're out on the road or are you just trying to get away from people? Do you envision your van to be more homey or more modular and functional? Would you rather enjoy the moment or take a photo? Would you rather fly under the radar, nobody knows that you're you're in there living or really show off how cool your van is. So I find that answering these bigger questions really helps down the line in making all the small decisions that you need to, to make on a daily basis. So like for me, I'm full time on the road and I'm working on the road. So having a nice place to pull out the laptop and and work for a few hours is really important to me. And I'm also one that kind of struggles being around other people while trying to get work done, so I don't go into coffee shops. Yeah. So, so knowing these things, you know how you like to go about working. Some people love being around other other people in that coffee shop and it helps them get things done. For me it doesn't. And the more you know about yourself you have more like self-awareness of how you function, the better your van build will be.
