Van Details: Cooking
All right, so let's talk about cooking. When I started "Van Life", I did not expect to be cooking in a van, and it kind of showed too, 'cause my kitchen setup was really tiny. I think I had like one foot of counter space. Slowly but surely, I started cooking a lot more in that van. I think it's because I ended up camping at trailheads and things like that, and there were no restaurant options. So just to be able to be close to the shoot locations for me was really important. And when I'm close to the shoot locations, there's not really any food options. So for that reason, I started getting into cooking and realized that I needed a bigger counter space to be able to fully cook. I guess you just have to ask yourself, where do you expect to be camping most of the time? Are you gonna be in the city? Are you gonna be stealth camping on city streets? Or are you gonna be in the middle of nowhere, really taking in nature? 'Cause that really dictates how big your kitchen needs to be. If you're...
around other food options then you don't necessarily have to be self-sustainable. Maybe you just need like a small fridge to, you know, maybe make a breakfast here and there, but you're not making full meals. I've started to adopt the mentality with my situation, because I am more of a off-grid liver. Although I don't shy away from going into cities, I'm usually more out in the middle of nowhere. I wanted the capacity to be able to go two weeks with, you know, my storage in the fridge, food storage in the van. I needed a big fridge to be able to fit two weeks worth of food and water, you know, water storage, all that stuff. So everything is designed around that mental time of two weeks. One luxury that I really can't live without is having a freezer, like a big freezer, something that can hold frozen fruit, ice cream, frozen meals from Trader Joe's, I'm like kind of hooked on those, and ice. I make ice all the time, in the hot summer months, like right now. When I'm filling up my water bottle I put ice in it, and it's just like a really nice luxury to have in a van. In the end, it all really just ties back into knowing what you eat, what you like, what you need on the road. You know, some people like the idea of roughing it. Maybe you're like a weekend warrior, and you're going back to your house in a few days, so you don't mind, you know, not having a big kitchen. But for me, because I full time live in this thing, I need a two burner stove, because I like to boil water while I'm sauteing veggies at the same time, you know. This kitchen really does feel like a legit home kitchen, and that's what I really wanted. Yeah, it's just being self aware of what you want out of this van. What you expect out of your home on wheels really.
