Audio Gear
What about, like speeches and you said something about speeches and singing during the ceremony how do you capture that audio without I mean, once they're up there they're up there you know so it's like you try to find a feed that's through the speakers so your friends this ceremony but your friends a ceremony in the ceremony obviously part of your planning again I keep coming back to planning because it's a massive thing it will basically make will break your chute I think right so because if you ask the questions you set down the couple and you've assist what is going to happen and who's going to be reading is going to be any poll any poem said or is there a singer that's coming in and performing for them when they walked down the aisle? Then you need to be ready and stay right ok, for example, if there's a singer and there's usually like a little mix up on what you do is those cables that I showed you you could use those cables teo connect to your zoom and basically what you do what...
you ask them is firstly when you approach thie the sound guy they're really busy so it's important to stow approached and politely said, hey man, he doing on alfio you know, doing the filming today for john and julia are, you know sara and rick whatever yeah I was just wondering when you had a chance you know, kind of a line out like a feed from your desk so that I could capture the audio and you know they'd be like yeah sure no problem sometimes and I say look give me five minutes good just sitting up the cable's cool no worries man I'll come back in five once you've done that you know they'll help you though I'm actually put it in the right connection and you know you need to have these cables you need to have a cable that is xlr some sort of phone jack both the small one and that the little pin and I would go either like you could go on being a tch right and just look for different just audio cables ones with like connections where you can change it from the cia to phone jack just have his men easy easy can I would also recommend getting a on attenuated like a pad and what that does could I have I think it's important that there's a pouch yeah but I'm I'm going to demonstrate this here because this applies for your ceremony which we're still talking about and also applies to the speeches which we'll get to in a moment so cables like this right I'm just gonna hold it up so you can have a look so then you know what what you need now you will remember the zoom that I showed you ryan whether it's an h for zoom or than you eight six you can basically do this in a number of ways that is the male off xlr connection that I can go into the the recorder h forced you connect that and that plugs into the feet like into the desk and then you get a clean very clean line out off the audio now does that mean that you just rely on that no again we need backup so you'll have your wireless mic on the groom you have one on the efficient so remember how I showed you with the zooms they have different outputs right? So you have one for these celebrated the efficient one for the the celebrant and with the groom I would also put a wide system like put a on actual record that's not transmit it's just a straight recorder because sometime he may get drop out especially if you're shooting outside and sometimes you need to work it ask them some people forget about this between your airport you definitely probably getsem interference so you would need to have the wired system to as a backup right? So that's one example then you've got like your so that's your there's many different different connections but that's obviously as you can see that and then what I do sometimes if I don't have like a straight r c a cable I just connect that and then if they line out fate is one of them then I could do that sorry that wood that would have it that wouldn't work sorry saying the wrong thing this would work sorry. Okay, since that goes into the disc so they might say to you hey, hey off I've got a connection a wreck wreck out record out it's a heavy gun yeah good peeps accord I'm cool so you use one of them or you can probably just find one that it's just a standard cable that goes in that my friends wolf it in the h for all the six the great thing about those recorders that you can connect fan jack or great and that is going straight into the recorder and then the other connection could be the wireless mic right? And then if you have the eight six or another eight actually that's what we used to do is to have two h wars as a backup as a back up and get you know you're different sources of the audio then you can use that for the efficient for the groom usually with the groom I would double that I'll double that whether it's look it may it may sound like a bit of an overkill but if you got those outputs those connections I would put a mike a wide and a wireless on the group and two receivers on separate recorders but if you have one recorder that's still find like one zoom and then one wide system that's still cool that's fine, you know, but just make sure you have a backup different system so I hope the fact that is that is that is that pretty clear? I think what people watching what you need to do is you know, you jump online and you look for audio cables and just to show you so you can see that's what they look look like you can get different connections and the idea is just to get as many as you can and then they're pretty shape, you know, it's not gonna break the budget. Another really, really important device is one of these. They're like ten bucks. Alright it's called an attenuated attenuated a t t in yeah, yeah, yeah, here it is and the way these things work is it it's it filters that sound that the volume of the sound? Because when you're getting a line out sometimes it's too hot it's too loud so this thing has a minus twenty minus thirty minus forty so you can you can control it on lower filter the sound sometimes sound the fates too hot. Well, remember when I mentioned that if you have issues with your volume, you need to control it from the source right, so if I connect this without a pad it's coming out of the mixer and it's going to the recorder if I go into the recorder and change the volume there that's not gonna help because there's still a distorted signal coming from the desk into the recorder so no matter what you do to the recorder that's not nothing's going to happen you're still going to get a pretty poor poor sound so you need to fix it from the source and these things are awesome and look what you do is you just connected I know it's kind of like how would you know if their source was hot? You do test ok? Yeah, so that's why? I can't stress enough that you need to give yourself some time there's a certain point at the preps we just need to draw the line right because you're creating a story you're not getting isn't about surveillance is not about getting along all this coverage back in terms of time you're getting coverage based on story, so if you've got the shots that you know that demonstrates the emotions and what they doing once you've established that you need to move on because you need time so she if you're working on your own you're one one operator shoot, then you need to give yourself some time and even if it's a two man operation or two person operation then you need to give one to you some time to do the audio and the other person can get some detail shots and people arriving you really need to get that footage it's so so critical can we jump in with some questions there's sure yeah clarification questions on that okay, so uh I guess a clarification this is from m cmd photography just to clarify you don't ever put mikes on the bride just the groom and you are able to hear her vows through his mike and then let's see sean cho won said with this required to labs with the groom did you say that or was that a miscommunication the second left that goes on the groom which is the wide system like the c twenty for the smaller the recorder that goes in their pocket the love is a very very tiny one um if I showed that I think there's a packet there yeah let's bring that over but it's um it's called a mark that the micro micro let's yeah if you give without you you'll find them so to answer the question I actually do my bride I do like the bride and we only started doing this not because we've seen finding that miking just the groom wasn't enough we just thought, you know what we've we've learned this new system that we can mike up the bride um but let me stress let me point out that the values that you just heard between shona shen till it was just the the lab the lapel mic on shaun something's just good yeah, so it comes down to the positioning off the mic and understanding how these mikes work it's an only directional so it's going to pick up it gently picks up it's a circular pickup wavelength a wave pattern that's the term way pattern so if you have the mike to be careful and don't interrupt this mike, if you have the mic, the idea is having not to hire because if you have too high he's his voice is gonna be too loud not gonna work you don't want it too low, right? You wanna have it pretty much close to look within my keys for me at the moment but like around here, right? So the idea is the distance between them, the groom's mouth to the mike is as close as possible to distance off the bride and they're going to be pretty close anyway and going to pick up pretty well and I've clearly demonstrated that you can be done and if you're outside, you'll always have windscreen on yes, definitely sometimes they don't if there's a scene a location where it's heavily protected by trees, then I went there for oh sometimes it might be a distraction and I do enough testing to hear it but I guess I would recommend put the fluffy on put the the the yeah I've seen like terminology win gemma is that right? Am I reading something wrong anyway? You know what I mean? So it's important to have that and trim them you can train them a little bit because they do come quite yeah cool. Any other questions? Can you show us the mikes and people had asked what what is the brand? What type? I guess you've said it times yeah, I am. I thought I'd kind of like save it for for this segment here because just to break it up because this is not, um this's like a little extra because as I said, I clearly mentioned that you can use one okay, so this is the mike yeah, now the quality of this mike is awesome and and what brand it is it's a called a matchstick mike a magic mike mm audio one three, two seven matchstick mike and you'll see that it looks like that's it get camera there and what you need to do is you need to purchase I don't have them here because as I mentioned we this is something we were just incorporated but you want to have write code r y o t have the sticky sticky like they like the that these are called windjammers there we go yeah they go I saw them they call windjammers I'm pretty sure it's a sticky thing and then that can stick onto the bride's dress inside and then you can you can what happens is one side is sticky and the other side is the actual felt it's a two gets a combination thing like it comes with like the filter and it comes with the sticky part reichert r y c e o th they windjammers do they come in white to blend in with her dress you put it inside the dress yeah we basically you know you'd be very careful and delicate and you have the etiquette to make sure that you know inappropriate but generally went out what when I might come up before the ceremony I will have a bridesmaid just assist because they need to feed it through the dress and obviously it's not appropriate for you to do that would be uncomfortable and you see is a any any kind of had been to the tire and the leg the leg and oh yeah and can you talk about battery life and memory storage for the mikes like I was going to run the whole ceremony sure I would recommend or the zoom recorders lithium batteries the energizes um with the h for their will do at least two full winnings tested them gonna show you that in some cases that will do three and then also with the eight six get, definitely, they actually would chew up a lot more, so you probably should be able to get two weddings, but we just need to be mindful of that. And just check the levels before you start. Like you leave it on for, like, five minutes. We start and just check if it's losing a bar than you're better off changing the battery with fresh that's. What I usually do just to be sure, I put the zoom on that's, the first thing I put on. Leave it on for ten minutes, because what happens with the h, the recorders, the zoom recorders, they don't register the battery, ah, life straightaway, so you need to leave them on for like, ten minutes. Come back and say, if you lose even one bond and usually one by tens into two bars down and then starts flashing that's. Not good that's, not good.
