So we'll change the product now we're now casting for cattle so you're running the show all right? So how in particular? So we're doing a catalog shoot and what would you want to see in the catalogs view of the clients? Still, well, let's say we're looking for a catalog, and since we're going to stick, we're going to make it young, but I want the girls to not be too too um, distracting beauty wise, I want them to be relatable to the moms out there to the women in the grocery line we're trying to sell, you know, let's say nightwear and it's not terribly sexy, but I want it to be sold and do well, all right, so your question should be in line with that as well. So you've got to think fast on the spot lived to people no camera in your hand, but you were still willing to people you're running the casting, your casting the models that you were going to shoot. So what you going to ask to find out if this model is the right model for your client? And I want to make sure that I can book this g...
irl all the time, especially when the catalogs it's always like a longer range of chutes that right might be I want to be able to use her over and over again and it could be a three week shoot on an island do we know it now where is it open ended right now it's the first casting is opening to you all right, can we have the first model please? Hi. How you doing? Good what's your name when he was cara hike so how long have you bean modeling? Only about a year now, ok? And what kind of modeling is your favorite style? Uh I am enjoying well so far I've only been a yoga model. Ok, have you done any cut look modeling or know how do you feel about this? It sounds like a lot of fun. Do you think wearing clothes that you particularly are thinking or high fashion are fashionable is boring and annoying know? Okay, I enjoy working what's the worst shoot you've ever been on. Um it wasn't a desert and I was doing yoga and we have to be barefoot and there were swirled cactuses all over and I had to do dancer pills and I ran into a cactus thing justice how's your availability shooting for the line of clothing we have way might need to be calling you quite frequently it's not gonna be one time shoot a hot what's your schedule like for the next month I'm available during the day and most evenings okay and are you going be available if we call you the day before oh, yes, I could arrange myself. And another question along this line. Do you currently shoot for any other? I guess you you mentioned you do not. You did not do any kind of look. So you do not have any commitments with anybody else. Okay, thank you so much. You're welcome things to grab these cards. Thank you. So that was great. And what she just did it also that question about, you know, what's your worst photo shoot ever. Or people ask that often also to find out you know, their stories and as the stores that happening in the same that you should be looking at the model's face and reading their expressions to see how the media, how they were you see how they look as attend that story. You're trying to find personality, not just beauty, because you get one hundred girls and they are all beautiful but what's beyond the beauty. Well, they will be alive in their eyes. Is that sparked there? Can they sell a product? Are they right for your client? You photographer need to be a tale of that doing the casting. So you're reading a lot. We're asking questions was also to find out about that model that person is perfect for the job sounds, so make sure you're asking questions. Pull things out and it could be anything to a degree you know we're doing the weekend you know what's your worst forest shoot or your your best photo shoot what's your last photo shoot you know where were you in the holiday when's your birthday where we for christmas? All that stuff sounds good. All right, can we have it in it? Next model fees during this from devil track during this round of interviews. So what is your goal? Are you doing a pre selection or are you doing a pre selection right now we're choosing the final model we're doing this. This is the first cast, so this would be the process of doing a first meeting? Awesome. Thank you. Could we have the next model? T's hi, how are you? Very nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Hire a then why you doing good? How are you? So how long have you been modeling? A little over two years. And what kind of modeling had he done? So for a lot of like a look book type stuff for a local designers on broadway shows for local designers as well ok, have you worked with bigger department stores and their lines? You know, how do you feel about it? I would love to do and what got you into modeling? What do you like about it? Um I love I love the aspect of being able to play and portray different characters so all of the shoes and things that I've done there there's always like a wide range like I've done a lot of like tennis stuff and body painting and just wearing the different unique styles because every designer is completely different that I worked for what do you feel it's the most important when you don't cut look type of modeling to embodying the outfit that you're wearing and to make it look the best that I possibly can ok good and how's your availability for the next month this shoot will involve more than one day type of photo shoot so we might be calling you back and forth my schedule is pretty open right now I'm only teaching dance I get to make my own schedule don't really nice um you said that you've done look books and catalogs and things like that how are you with them? You know fourteen hour days and thirty outfit changes pretty good my longest shoot has been about eighteen hours there's like ten looks okay what do you do to keep up your energy during long days off shooting a red ball on water? And of course I make sure the like sleep and don't plan anything fine moment of the shooting for two days in a row good, good and do you have any conflicting or have you had any conflicting photo shoots with other departments and friends okay, thank you very much thank you for coming in nice anything you thank you this also happens on casting um you may or may not know this but it's a reality if you're seeing one hundred girls in today there you're going to walk in the door they will not like the moment she comes in and then they might have a cold for that but you know not to waste time continuing questions then you just see the girl and say all right thanks for coming in neco could be like oh what time is it and that's the code to say oh next person so keeps going all right should we have a code you called it all day but these things are very common alright next model t's hi. How are you like eighty so how how long have you been modeling so far I'm in my first year how how are you liking it? I love it. What got you into it and what do you like like about it? I've always loved fashion everything about it and you know modeling is a way to kind of get to explore it so um doing that is kind of why I got started with and what I was going to say with catalogues um it's a really long day with about thirty forty changes and sometimes the outfits are very boring and minimal how how do you feel about that? I'm hearing that you love, you know, expressing yourself with high fashion clothes but these aren't high fashion pieces, right? It's kind of how you want tio make those close exciting so it's up to you to do it and I think that's kind of part of the challenge is working with basic outfits and then making them into something better. Kid where you from? I'm from montana. Oh, I was just out there do you ride horses? Well, ride over. No, no course is not my thing. What are your full beeston obvious? I like to work out love running pallotti's uh, music. Yeah, yeah. So you you pretty energetic you can keep your energy up for no it's uh, give me some music and I get that sounds good. Yeah. So I just want check your availability for the next month way might be calling you for more than one day. Shoot. How is your schedule for the next month? I have a couple of projects, but I'm sure we could work something out. All right, well, thank you. Make everything so that's all great as well. Every time you're asking questions is to find out more about them and make a connection that's very important to you because we're looking to you to make sure can you work that model we're looking for to see she fits the brand can she work? You know, eighteen hour day I'm looking to make sure that she's happy but I want to find out from you does she work? You think you could work? Do you like her? And if you do, why we're looking for you for the information and if we get to the shoot after the casting of casting all these models and she's being boring or did in the eyes were looking at you and wondering why you didn't see that in the cast and it's on you as photographer to tell in that two minute span or three minute span what that model has and a lot of pressure on you is that two to three minutes pretty normal timing how well yeah, that is a big casting and there are a lot of models we all because it might start at eight thirty in the morning where you're sitting here until five thirty or six it's a long day and we're all sitting here we want get breaks and it's not easy she's getting tired, I'm getting tired, we have fifty girls lined up out there to go have you found them going into you know her that's, the reality, some nixon liabilities I go are you good having you what's her name to tour a anderson nice meeting you so how long have you been modeling for? Two years on enough I'm model for first are just coming out of me to work on their portfolio builder experience any of them doing any projects for cataloger and clothing lines for chloe villains and talent no, just college students are just coming out and to build a portfolio ok, so we're doing should for a catalog issue no, what do you think is the most important for us and model? How how should you model for debt for a catalog? I feel that catalogs are represented to people all different types of people. So, um really the feeling of the picture really matters. And so I want to be able to show a lot of emotion in the picture and really express myself in the picture to be able to relate to people who would see the image and really be attracted to the feeling of the emotion of the picture. Okay for this catalog we were sure you wanted a trampoline. Are you filed? Jumping on family? Oh, yes, I love trampolines dio forty looks it's gonna be an eighteen hour day and we would we're not really looking for to posey and too much expression we still want you to sell the clothes. Can you do that? Yes, yes like that and how is your availability for the next month? This is going be serious off photoshoots s o we would have to call you back multiple times. How's your schedule, mike. Several very flexible. So whatever timing that you need, I can move around my schedule with yours. All right. One last question. What are your other hopis then? My hotaling would be dancing a fashion and event planning. Um, I did some of that planning with a few other companies, different shows and things like that. So I have experienced those, and those are my interests. She'd be ableto keep up with long days. All right, well, thank you. Nice morning. Is meeting all of you. Thank you. Thank you. So that's great that we let the other guys do. The casting is I think they get the idea. Now. The idea is to spark conversation that gives you the feeling of what that model has. We start tomorrow, guys start shooting and we're going to shoot. You've now met the models that we have to work with way have four shoots. We're going to do for different types of chutes. Were starting tomorrow on the roof.

This was more of a collaborative course with Matthew Jordan Smith and Yoanna House, and it is brilliant. I just finished watching this for a few hours straight. I own several Creative Live courses and this is definitely in my Top 3. Matthew's teaching style is so kind but to the point and informative. That's the kind of photographer I aim to be. He puts forth his knowledge here in a way that totally encouraged everyone involved. I loved Yoanna as well. She was very direct but friendly as well. I loved watching her direct the budding models and her experience showed quite well. This part is for John, the guy who commented on June 2017. I completely disagree with you that there were too many questions and that other people were talking much more than Matthew, and that that was a negative. Matthew's whole point was not just to get straight to shooting but to talk a bit about interacting with people in general. This wasn't just about technical stuff; this was about forming that connection between photographer and model/subject. This was as much psychology as it was about actual shooting, and I absolutely loved that. So I 100% strongly disagree with you as this is one of Creative Live's BEST courses that I've seen thus far. Thanks a ton, Matthew and Yoanna, and thanks so much again, Creative Live (I'm a huge fan of you guys!).
