Day 22 Bonus: "Adding Video"

Today we're going to photograph at a client's home and we have been photographing this family for several years so this will be another time that we get to photograph and watch your family grow up which we absolutely love during this session are client chose to do one of our story sessions which is where we include video into the session so they're pre paying for that which makes it nice for us because if we're going to do video we want to make sure it's gonna be a really nice order and that they're going to buy the video because it takes a lot of time to be able to do that so you're going to get to fall along with stacy as she shoots video for our story session and get a little bit of feeling from her on what she's looking for when she's shooting video we're going to do the first part of our shoot right in our client's home it's kind of cold outside today and so we'll photograph first inside and make use of the elements that are there we've got the couch with the neutral color the pil...

lows that we're tying in from the new house and in the background of this image I'm going to try to shoot kind of into the corner of the room so we just have some depth we do have some windows back behind but I'll be shooting at a pretty shallow depth of field with the four of them trying to get them pretty much on the same plane so I can shoot a shallow as possible and put the background out of focus okay snow go back in there a little bit e let's take your arm around elissa hey snuggle in and bring your shoulder at eliza there we go perfect everybody looks so cute legs good you guys dave let's take your right hand on your knee what do you do in good job loose looks great guys she's been great she's the perfect little model today remove this and I'm gonna scoot you up just a little bit right there are you okay right there okay hugging on daddy okay let's see if we can either get him on your lap and laying over there beside you in lave it laying over hey oh door did you get mom gator where you going george let's let him just pick a charge guess who I have is he watching he's watching georgie that's endured the safeties lecesne eagle in a little bit can you snuggling to daddy a little bit get close good good job huh oh here it comes is going to get to get teo it's gonna get dirty oh lucy told me this dog he didn't have a name ha ha ha ha uh uh uh that looks great you guys owe georgie where's your jog, huh is various huh? Oh good job guys. Alex give ugo did you get this? No, we're going hey hey, ladies, can you look at george? Okay? Oh, he's going to come get you? Oh, now we're going to move outside and we've got kind of a naughty little one so we're going to kind of just let him do his thing, which is, you know, the great part of being able to just shoot casually and especially at somebody's home you khun take breaks when you need to, you can offer little bribes if you have teo, but we're gonna be outside just in their backyard and we're lucky to have a beautiful space here with a pond and a little bridge and all kinds of fun things that we can tie together and also things to keep our little guy occupied. So we're going to do whatever it takes to get him kind of settled in one spot and, you know, really, I think a lot of times we get so worked up about making sure we do all these different things to make sure we have enough to show the client. But the reality is if we really spent time planning with the client before the session, we know what we're shooting for, so we're really going for one main look from each of the different places that were shooting, and so I just need one or two great shots from inside and another one or two great shots from outside. I know I'm gonna have more than that and you will too. But in planning with their client, you know, if you're communicating that and the rest is just kind of cake, so, you know, communicate those things and here's what I'm shooting for and let them know exactly what you are shooting for. So when that's done, it can just be playtime and just have fun and everybody's relaxed part of what I'm doing during the session is thinking about where the light is, where what I want behind the subject's kind of, you know, that whole story telling image, and then I want stacy with video to be following along with a different perspective and really just kind of telling this story with motion and that's what we love about video and what our families and clients are living about video is that it really pulls in that personality in that movement, and when you tie it in with the still images, it really does tell the story of the family, so we call those sessions it's my life story sessions, so I love doing video sessions with lori I love coming along with her and not just shooting over her shoulder, but being able to capture those moments that show who the kids really are, those moving moments, the things that parents might not actually like in the during the session. They think they're being naughty sometimes, but they're really sweet, and it really shows who they are, and in years to come, the parents are gonna look back and they're just gonna love seeing their kids personality shine. And so while laurie is, um, shooting something for their wall and she's shooting something and she's not always posing them, but, you know, sometimes we do pose them. I'm trying to capture the little moments in between, so those easy moments to capture that just happened like lucy dancing on the bench and georgie fishing in the pond where them collecting walnuts together and throwing them. I didn't have to direct them to do that that's just something that they're doing and they're just being kids. But then there's the other moments where we asked them to tell, hold hands and skip together or swing together on the swings. Those are the things I'm looking for, the things they're doing on their own and the other things we can kind of stage and make it look like they did it on their own because they are things that the kids would do anyways, the last thing we did during the session was shoot for their christmas cards will probably incorporate an image or two from their regular session. But then this family had some fun ideas of incorporating a merry christmas flag and be merry sign and so we've got some fun things to do with that, and as we were going, I started thinking that I was probably going to suggest to them that they actually do a video card for this year, so we'll create a dvd that will go into a car that friends and family can pop into their computers and kind of watched the story of their session and I'm pretty sure they're going to take me up on it, so that would be really fun unless I'm in the middle holding hands and just holding it up at a certain point where america's miss okay, everybody look down at your letters because georgie is he found his e let's get going one more time like I do it again. Yeah, because your eyes after I know I've got what I want, you know, that main family grouping? I've got some individual shots of the kids, we've tied it all together with what I want to do for the main space in the new home that we're gonna be decorating for and then a couple of out takes that we've talked about, I can just kind of let the session go a little bit, let them do their thing, follow him around and just get some fun interaction. With the shooting as well as the video, because we want to have those still captures a cz well, we can, you know, have for an album a lot of times for our clients. You know, they they do their main grouping that I have suggested to them. We get that done. But then they still want to have all the memories and the images from the session. So books and image boxes are great ad on products. And so, as you're shooting, think about those things and how those products can help. Tell the story.

I cannot say enough GREAT things about this course!!! I've been in business for over 10 years now, but still need to check in on the business side of things periodically. This class reminds us just how much fun marketing, sales, and planning can be. It has rejuvenated my passion for the BUSINESS side of this business. In fact, I'm so inspired by what Lori has to say, I think I will recommend this class to my COMPETITORS down the street. We will all be better for it and the industry will be better too! This is perfect for those just starting out AND seasoned pros :)
