Advanced Fonts Tricks & Tips in Adobe Illustrator CC
Okay, so we're in the typography section and we're going to do lots of tips and tricks in this video, Just like lots of little stuff that will help your workflow. Um let's start with going to open up the character panel just because we can use the one over here on the side, but it's just easier for the moment to have a separate panel. Cool, so what I'm looking to do is this font here at the top here, I want to change. Okay, so some of the nice things you can do is up the top here when I drop down. Okay, there are some filters on the top here. I want to change it to something like maybe a slab serif. So what it's gonna do is somehow magically, it knows all the fonts are in here that are slab serif. Okay, so just really easy to cut these things down. Okay, so I want to use handwritten font. Okay, you can see them just hovering above it and it's updating on the left. They're super handy. Okay, make sure you turn it off otherwise it stays on forever. It looks like you don't have too many f...
onts, favorites is a good one. You say you are mixing with fonts. Lots kind of playing around with brands and trying to grow fonts, but there's a few that you use all the time. You just start them. Okay, so museo. I use a lot. Say let's use lust. So what you can do is you can come into here and kind of go into the drop down and just click on this option. It just lists your favorites. Okay. So just a quick way rather than scroll, scroll, scroll, Okay, Depending on how many points you have. Alright. Another handy one. Find similar to super handy as well and for some reason museo can't doesn't work. Right? And so I'm gonna change this one to lust and so I'm using lust, right? And it's a nice big display font and but I want to find something else. Okay, I've used it too much or I just want to find something different. Drop on this. There's an option here. This little wavy line says apply similar filter. So I want you to go and find similar fonts to lust and you can see here It's pretty cool. Huh? It's got some hole. Where was that one? That one? No, you're not allowed to use kills. That's banned. But yeah, there's some good ones in here, right? That are pretty close. And so that's quite so fine. It doesn't work for all of them. If I click on this guy museo and click on similar, you guys can't find anything. Okay, so it doesn't 100% work. The next thing is type kit. Okay. If you're not using it already dropped down, you have to have a paid creative cloud subscriber account, click add fonts from type kit and I won't cover this too much because you probably already using it if you're not, you probably can't and I always click on browse at the top here, log in with your adobe, I d I love you. Um eh let's say, I'm gonna put my name in there. Okay. And the cool thing about it is you can decide on what kind of things you're looking for and because it's part of your creative crowd um subscription, um it allows you to download these guys for free, it's really easy to do. So you like this one here, you click on it, you click single and kick back, relax. And Kotaro should appear in illustrator. A set you see at the top there there he is there. So now I can say core there, you see, I quite like them. And what I find quite handy as well up here is that I want to just search by this because it's the ones that have gone through and like pulled from type kit. So it's often stuff I've kind of really spent time trying to find, wow. Okay, so those are the filters, let's turn them all off, They stay on. So you remember to turn them off when you're finished. Okay. The next thing to look at is to do with open type fonts and their ligature. So there are some fonts in here that have you C T K and oh, those are good fonts. Those are both open type fonts, the type ones or the ones that say, oh, the ones that are not so good, are these tt ones, These old school true type fonts. The reason the difference. Sometimes you've got on your machine, right, two of the same font you like? Why do I have Lust and Lust? Okay. Or Lust M. T or something else? Less pro Often it's to do with the ligatures and glyphs that come along with the font. What I mean by that is this font here was designed by a wonderful type designer. I love this font, but let's say I want to look at, I don't like the way the X is a bit flowery for me. I'm going to duplicate that a few times. Okay. What I'd like to do is because it's an open type font. I can see that. Or a type get font. Okay. T K O What I can do is I can highlight a letter and you can see down the bottom here, there's alternatives. Okay. So it's just, you know, so the type designer, typographer, photographer, I'm not sure the word, but they've decided he or she has decided that they've got kind of two options. That's true of a lot of the letters. Okay. You slept on it and there's a big flowery person there. Okay. There's actually two versions of this. Oh, I might choose to use. Okay. Yeah, it's a nice way of building up kind of complex looking things and not having to do the courage tool or the width tool. It's even better. Um, say the designer has decided that, you know, they've done a they call them stylistic sets so they've designed it with all of these flowers. All those flourishes and what you can do is with it selected. Okay, we're gonna go to this open type if you can't find that. It's under window type, open type. And what we want to do is down the bottom here. This is one called So this is the set one. Okay. You can see there's same. Yeah, So that's that's what the designer decided is the kind of first option, second option set to there's all these curly bits. Okay, Set three. Okay. Has them kind of coming back across. There's one here, four. So four looks the same as everything else. Set five. I'm just going through them. All right. So they're often okay if it's an open type font or type kit fonts, there are stylistic sets and you will find just kind of some extra glyphs and ligatures to use, Okay, you can copy and paste them from each to kind of build up something quite nice. Another new feature is okay, the technology has been around for a while, but There's just uh so I'm gonna use this body copy here and there's variable fonts, which is kind of crazy, right? There's only a few of them available at the moment. Um, illustrator has included a couple in the this version. Okay, this is CC. but if I drop this down, there's this chunk in here. Can you see it says var. Okay, so it is open type variables and pick there's not many to pick from. So we're gonna pick from use acumen. Okay, Because it has lots of things. So click on that now, what's going to happen is nothing except see this little option here, variable for click on that and this magic, this happens. So watch this somehow. Watch this dragon keep an eye on that. Let's move this up here. Okay, watch this. You wait. It just magically gets bigger. Okay, so it's not just like adding a Stroker on the outside. The designers made some really kind of stylistic choices about how things grow and where they grow. Okay, so wait, same with the width. Okay. It's just it's pretty amazing that you can just go actually I want the Yeah. Instead of condensed or compressed, you can just kind of find some kind of happy medium for what you need. Okay, same with the slant. Okay, pretty cool. Hey, hold up. And there's not many fonts that are built into illustrator and there are more you can go and buy and use if you need that kind of flexibility. Not all of them have the full. I pick that one as an example because it has weight and slant. Some of them. Let's say like um some of these variable ones say Minion. Okay. And I click on this. It only has weight and optical size. Okay, so I'm gonna change the weight and the optical size is kind of interesting. Like it's not really making it wider or bigger. It's just kind of like getting more volume. Some pretty cool stuff. All right, my friends, that is my tips and tricks for fonts and type in adobe illustrator. Let's get on to some more type things in this section. Alright, see you in the next video.
