How to Make a 3D Ribbon in Adobe Illustrator CC
Hi and welcome to this ribbon making class in adobe illustrator. Okay, we're going to use an envelope distort and particularly a mesh to make this Yeah, pretty rainbow ribbon. Alright, let's jump in. All right. First up, I haven't forgotten this time. Open up ribbon from your exercise files. Again, it could be anything. There's just rectangles that have gradients in them. They don't have to be anything other than that. Um it's quite nice. It was just lines. Okay, it looks quite cool. But first thing we need to do is we need to go to object and we need to actually make a duplicate first. Always need a backup. Okay, go to object and go to envelope distort and go to make with mesh. Now by default, I think it's at three x 3. The more detailed it is the more control you have, but often it doesn't look as natural. So for a ribbon, something like this, just one by one is perfect. Cool. Now nothing really happens except when I grab the direct selection to the white arrow. If I click on any of ...
these corners now watch. Cool. So it's a little hard to see. There's a red dot there and there's a handle out here. So anchor point in the handle. We're just gonna make it into the ribbon like you saw earlier. It's just kind of freehand. Now, one thing you might notice is that red dots on this red thing. It's quite hard to see the colors. Right? Dealing with rainbows is probably the worst one. So you can just so you know, there's an advanced trick, double click your layer anywhere, but the name. Okay, And you can go in and pick a different color if that kind of suits what you're doing, better science still not gonna work, but rainbow life. Okay, So I'm just going to fiddle around with it now and try and turn it into something that kind of looks like a ribbon. You can hang around with me for a little bit. Um but again, it's just I'm just winging it. You might have a special project and you kind of want a special shape. Okay, I'm just kind of making something, maybe I'll blue in it that way. Yeah, a little bit like that straight up. Okay, what I'm going to do now is I'll fast forward it because yeah, that's what time. All right, you're back. Um one thing that I did kind of do while you were while as fast forwarding is I turned off the smart guides that were just kind of jumping around, snapping to things and causing just making a little bit tough. Command you on a Mac or control you on a Pc to turn that off. Cool. So, I've got this thing here, I promise I'll stop fiddling with it. I thought I would. Okay. All right, so you've got this now I want another option. So the one that kind of runs underneath now, what I might do is go back to this beginning one and use this again. So I'm gonna make a duplicate what I might do is because if I start, I practice this before and when it's underneath and you're trying to make the ribbon, it's actually really hard to know where the other one starts and finishes. So what I thought would do is do the re color artwork because I wanted to be a bit darker anyway, so it looks like it's in the background casting a shadow maybe. So I'm gonna go edit edit colors, re color artwork. And the best option is go to edit that first one's really confusing, it's gonna edit and down the bottom here, I'm going to link all of the colors and just make them a bit play around with the brightness and just kind of lower them down. Cool. Okay. And I'm gonna use this one to get started, I'm just gonna kind of get it close. Um I'm not worried about it and and now I'm gonna go to object Envelope distort, make with another one x 1, mesh. It's okay for me. Cool. I'm gonna send my guys back on command you on a Mac or control you in the PC. Y. Because like one of the things that I want is I'm gonna grab my direct selection tools. I want this corner anchor point to be watch this, it kind of snaps to that one, so at least they're kind of joined up. That's kind of the first thing that I wanted, I might turn them off again in a second but it's looking alright? No, by smart guides um now we're gonna fast forward it again because I am just gonna fill around with us until it feels like a ribbon. Alright uh fast one time. Alright jump back in with the problem because I can't click on this thing because that goes in the way. So what I'm gonna do, black arrow select on him and hit command to okay or control to an NPC that just locks him for a second. Okay, you can go up to object and lock. It means now I can click on this guy in the background and he's not messing about with me. Alright, back to speedy version. Alright, so you're back. I really want to just this top one. I don't feel like we've got it across there. Something weird, but I'm going to leave it because what I want to do is that could be it, you might be happy with that. I'm going to add a bit of shading and shadows, It's gonna lose, it's kind of like, I don't know, flat vector style. Okay, it's kind of like semi flat but that's okay. Um So what we're gonna do is I'm gonna grab my outboard tool and I'm going to make a duplicate by holding down the option key on a Mac or key on a PC and what I want to do is unlock all our objects because I locked that top guy. Right? So what I'd like to do is and there's gonna be two of them. I'll do the top one first to show you and then I'm also do the bottom one with you as well. But what I want to do is make a gradient on top of this. So I want to do two things. I want to go to object envelope distort. There's one called expand basically it's no longer using that mesh anymore. Okay, I can't do those adjustments but that's okay. Next thing I wanna do is kind of stick them all together. I can do that using my shape builder tool, I can hold down my shift key. Just drag a box around the mall. It's kind of like the kind of gap in the middle there. I'm okay with that because what I want to do is just fill it with a gradient. Remember what the shortcut was for filling with gradient? It's the full stop period key. Okay, so I've got a gradient. What I want is this end of the gradient. So I double click the little white house, I want the transparency or opacity down to zero. Cool. And click off. Close them down because what I want to do is this kind of want to stick it over the top. Now white at the end. He is probably not a great idea, it's probably best having black at the end. It's not gonna matter for my application. Ok, so it's not snapping. So I'm gonna turn on my smart guides again, it's in the window smart guides and now it's about playing around with the blending modes. Okay, so I'm gonna click on capacity and normal darkens. Okay, Multiplies. I think I like multiply the best color burn view. Okay, so go through the mall and pick out which one you like, I'm guessing multiply is gonna be the nicest and what I might do is with my gradient tool G. There he is there. Okay. Is I'm going to drag out my gradient to be just a little bit smaller. Just kind of dragging it cross. Yeah, kind of cooling. Does it look good? Looks like it. So I'm gonna do the same thing with this, the same process if you're happy with that, you can stop the video and go on to the next one. If not, you can follow me again. Let's do it twice, object and let's go to envelope. Distort, expand. I'm gonna give my shortcut to my shape of the tool which is shift em holding down the shift key, drag a box around them, period. It's remembered my last gradient which is awesome. You shouldn't be on your shape builder tool when you hit the period king didn't work. Okay, you'd be on your black arrow now. I feel like we're going to do it the reason I didn't do white, I shouldn't have done it before with this. If I change it to black, it's going to give me a better kind of effect. Who you my friend are gonna snap down there and then we're going to probably get geeky maybe more. Okay. And I'm gonna find a blending mode that works and maybe turn down the opacity as well. Darken multiply color burn. Okay, I'm going to go back to multiply, we always use multiply. Right, is there anyone Alright, that is our three D ribbon thing and you could obviously see its application for fabrics and lots of other things but that meshes quite cool. Can be done with you can put type into that mesh. We did a ribbon because it looked nice but yeah, you could use it for lots of different applications. Ok, so last but not least its class project homework time. Okay, and it's all I want you to do is do some sort of three D. Doesn't have to be using this gradient. It can do, you can just do slightly different shape, slightly different, amazingly different shapes, different colors. You may or may not use the greater the kind of gradient to kind of color it and yeah, I'd love to see what you make. Okay, so make sure you publish it on this website so I can see it or and send it to me on instagram and bring your own laptop and on twitter, I am dan loves adobe. Alright, I'd love to see what you've done. Yeah. Class projects, Go do it.
