Aerial Photo
Welcome to a new full editing session. We're going to take this aerial photo showed up in pismo beach and we're going to turn it into something more amazing, more wonderful. Hopefully better looking like this with lots more color, a little bit more just eye catching. So this is a jpeg compressed image so we don't have as much information as we would if we were shooting in a raw format. So editing things like contrast and exposure and things like that, we don't have as much room as with the high dynamic range of a DSLR or mirror, less camera that being said, we still can do a lot with it. So we're gonna go in here if you want to follow along. This is the aerial photo. So first let's go into crop and with this one really, I just want to level the horizon. So I'm going to take the straighten tool. Just click on the far left side of the horizon, drag all the way across, trying to get it as close as possible to the horizon. And that's pretty much if you want to, you can crop in just a littl...
e bit in case you want to put maybe this part of the pier on the rule of thirds, I don't know what you would want to do, but I'm happy with this crop. Next we're going to add and change the exposure. So even though this is a compressed image bringing up the highlights does get back a lot of the information lost in the area down here in the pier and some parts of the landscape over here. When you boost the shadows so much, sometimes it's nice to bring back the blacks just a little bit to bring back some of that contrast. I'm also going to bring down the highlight to get some of that information back in the sky again, similar to with the shadows. If I push the highlights too far, it might be good to bring the whites up even more even though that means we are losing some information by completely overexposing. I'm actually okay with that because it looks a little bit more natural in terms of clarity. I'm going to push this a little bit just slightly if I go too far, it starts to look like an HDR photo which I don't want for this photo. You might like that though. So that's one way you can do that with D haze, pushing D. Hayes will get some color and information back but this photo is pretty detailed already. So I'm gonna leave leave it as is with vibrance and saturation. We can boost the vibrance just a little bit. But I'm going to do a lot of the color editing with graduated filters in just a second skipping tone curve. I might add a little bit of contrast at the very end. I'm going to go straight down to the detail panel. If I zoom in, you'll see that there's a lot of digital noise in this photo and that's because this was shot with a phantom four drone and it only shoots with jpeg or compressed images. And when you do that in a low light situation to expose properly or as close as proper as possible, it adds digital noise. So I'm going to increase the noise reduction to something like 29, 30 or so. And when I do that, I think you can probably even tell from this wide shot that it actually smoothes things out quite a bit and to me it looks a lot better. Cool. So that's pretty much all I'm going to do with the basic edits. Now let's dive into our graduated filters and really to go to this photo right here. I used to graduated filters. So one is going to be for the ocean, one is going to be for the sunset. I always start with the sky. So I'm going to start with the ocean this time. So with the graduated filter, I'm just going to click, make sure that we have the bottom selected right along the coastline, something like that. Now with this graduated filter similar to another edit of a landscape photo in this class. I don't want the whites of this ocean, the foam to be edited. If I go ahead and add a bunch of temperature, I'm just going to go crazy and show you what I mean. This doesn't not look good, but if I add a range mask for luminescence and I take down this range to just selecting the darks and not those highlights of the whites of whitewater. It looks a lot better now. It's just your chance to play around with the color. You might want to change the color down here with this color tool. Maybe picking a little bit more green or something like that to add to your ocean. Maybe you want it to be pink, whatever you want. You can do with this color selector. I'm going to put put a little bit more green in there as well, which you don't get with the temperature slider up here. I guess I could have done it with the tent but I like being a little bit more specific with this color down here and that's honestly pretty much it. The only thing I will do is I might take this brush and erase setting the flow down a little bit and I'm gonna erase parts of the pier because down here in the pier I don't want to add so much of the blue because the peer down here is in the shadows. So when I add that color it makes it look a little bit unnatural. So I'm just painting over the pier. Like so this is something that if I was really editing this photo to like print or post online or something like that and I wasn't trying to rush through it for a tutorial. I might actually go in and really zoom in and get the details like so alright, so if I turn this on and off, you can see what this is doing to the ocean, which is pretty darn cool. Now I'm just going to click the new button down there or up there in the top, right and click and drag to create another graduated filter for the sky and the landscape above this was shot right at sunrise. So we got that nice golden hour light shining over this landscape. I want to make it even more gold and so I'm going to take my temperature boost it up quite a bit. But again, when I do that to everything it starts to look like you're just painting over this image. So I'm going to turn on my range mask for luminescence and in contrast to what I did with the ocean, I'm going to just select the highlights so we're not getting all the darks in this image up here or in the landscape, something like that. Maybe I boosted the orange just a little bit too much and I also might erase part of the sky over here. So I'm gonna take my brush a race, make it super big and just erase parts of the sky up there. So we still have the blue in the sky over on that side. I liked that gradient better. Cool. So now we can see the before and after with just the sky at, it just adds a little bit of warmth. It's not too crazy, but I think it makes it pop just a little bit more. Alright, so let's click done whenever I do this at the end, I kind of look at the overall exposure again, one thing I liked was I actually boosted the overall exposure even more after I did all of my edits and for some reason when I played around with that, I just liked it. So this is just me not necessarily what you want to do because you do push this hissed a gram up into the whites and the highlights and the a lot of it starts to get overexposed. But I actually like that a little bit better, boosting my shadows even more. Maybe bringing my blacks even up now if you don't like that or if you push it that far, but you're like, oh I need a little bit more contrast, you can easily go down to the tone curve. Drop down my point curve and add a medium contrast curve which adds back some of that contrast right away. So as always, I like to actually check the edit that I did before and now after Interesting when I did it before I added a lot more clarity, which was not something that I thought I was going to do. But hey, I like this new version two. So this was my aerial photo edit, really boosting those colors of the ocean and the sky, that balance of orange to blue. Something that you see a lot in my photos, especially if landscapes with skies and sunsets and sunrises. That's something I like to do. So you know my style now. Alright, so that's the aerial photo edit. I would love to see your edits as well for this photo or a photo that you've taken. So make sure once you've done and edit this photo, export it, post it online, share it on social media and tag me at Philemon are or at video school online and I'll check it out. Thanks for watching and we'll see you in another tutorial.
