18. Refining Your Edit: Replace Edit

Summary (Generated from Transcript)

The lesson is about the replace edit feature in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, which allows users to replace a portion of a video clip with another clip without affecting the overall timing of the sequence.

Q&A:

  1. What is the replace edit feature in Adobe Premiere Pro CC?

The replace edit feature allows users to replace a portion of a video clip with another clip without affecting the overall timing of the sequence.

  2. What is the keyboard shortcut for the match frame command?

The keyboard shortcut for the match frame command is either M or F.

  3. How can match frame be used to find a specific shot in a large amount of footage?

By selecting a clip in the timeline and pressing the match frame shortcut (M or F), the original clip will be loaded into the source monitor at the exact frame where it was parked, making it easier to work with and locate specific shots.

  4. How can in and out points be marked without overwriting the first frame of a clip?

In and out points can be marked by using the I and O keys on the keyboard to set the in and out points respectively. Alternatively, the X key can be used to mark both the in and out points at once.

  5. How can a replace edit be performed in Adobe Premiere Pro CC?

To perform a replace edit, the user can drag the clip they want to replace onto the desired location in the timeline while holding down a modifier key. The available options for the replace edit will be displayed as pop-ups, and the user can choose the appropriate option.

Refining Your Edit: Replace Edit

The last edit we're gonna talk about is the replace edit. Which is, if I, say, it's a great head nod there, but I found a better one. (chuckles) Could be for another clip, but let's see if I can go ahead and see if I have much better reaction. Don't I ever smile? (chuckles)I'm crushing your head there. Okay, there we go, there's a smile. Yeah, yeah, I like me there. Okay. (class laughs) So there I have my end point... Oh, you know what I did? I love making mistakes, I said that before. I'm working with the clips in the timeline. So, I can't change that in and out point because, it doesn't want me to mess myself up. I have to go bring the original clip back in. I just did that with one keyboard shortcut, and I'm going to tell you what that is. I knew I wanted to find the original clip of this, from here, without digging. It's something called a match frame. If I'm on a clip in the timeline and I hit the magical match frame shortcut, I'll give you a guess, it's going to be either M or F,...

and we know M is used for marker, so if you hit F for Frank, it will load this clip, or it'll find this from here, so it's a brand new instance, into here and I can do stuff with it. It's great cause lets say you say, oh I'm going through all my footage and I need to find this shot, and I have 4,000 shots, and I don't know what this one is; select it here, hit the F key, loads the original into your source monitor to work with. And it loads it at the exact frame where it was parked. Which is good, maybe you need to, oh I deleted my audio by accident, and I wanna bring the whole thing back again, have to find it. So that's what I did, I found that, had to find that wonderful reaction shot again. Here we go. Mark an end point. And now I have an in and an out point. I want to mark an in and and out point and we haven't talked about this, hopefully this will work. I'm going to test this, yes it does work. Okay, you like that? I'm going to tell you how to do something, let me make sure it works, cause it's less embarrassing to do it that way, right? But, we could mark an in and an out point by going to the beginning and marking an in, and going to the out and marking an in, and technically, that actually would be wrong, cause they're like, oh I mark and in point, and then I'll use the down arrow key and I mark an out point? I'm going to overwrite the very first frame of this clip, and it'll lose 1/30 of a second. Now, it might not be a big thing, but you know, you're cutting a commercial, 900 frames, every frame counts. So what I really want, is I want to step back, and mark that as my out point. That's a lot of keyboard strokes, right? Let me go ahead. And I'm not going to tell you how I move this. I is in, O is out. What do pirates do when they hide their buried treasure? They dig a hole, they put it in, and what do they do? Mark and X. They mark an X! X marks the spot. So, winner! (class laughs) I place the playhead over there if I hit the X key, it marks an in and the out over the range of that clip. Very easy to do. Option X, by the way, removes both the in and the out at the same time. So now I mark my in and my out point, and I want to do a replace edit . So I'm dragging this over, there's a couple ways to do this, and let's see if I let go, if I let go, that probably won't do what I want. I need to hold a modifier key down. So it allows me to teach you another trick that we haven't learned about. That's what I love about this, lots of tricks. If I drag from left to right, look at this complex thing that's happening. These are popups that let me do a variety of edits, without having to remember a keyboard shortcut or anything. Okay, and I'm going to zoom in there, so you can actually see them when I pull this over. So, if we drag it into the middle, that would be an Insert edit. Let it go there. Overlay. This is something we haven't talked about, and this is something that's new, insert before, insert after. So let's say you're really lazy, and your playhead is in the middle of the clip, and you know you want to put something in before that clip. It inserts it at the edit point prior to where your playhead is parked, and the same thing for the insert after. Mkay? And then, here we go, we have replace, which I had completely forgotten where the keyboard shortcut was. So I let go, so it would freeze here, on this insert because of my four points, but lets bring it over here, do a replace, and if everybody is happy and angels are looking over, The graphs, but I've set up really great-- So there I was smiling, so that allowed me to do the replace edit.

I've never even tried video editing before this class. I opened the program once and panicked. After only 9 lessons I was able to throw a short video together (basic of course, but still pretty cool). I wish all of my teachers growing up were just like Abba. He goes over everything without dragging anything on for too long. He repeats things just enough for me to actually remember them, and he is funny. He keeps it fun and shows that even he makes mistakes. I can't even believe how much I have learned in less than a quarter of his class. I have a long way to go and am very excited to learn more. This class is worth every penny and more! I was hesitant on buying the class because I have CS6 and he works with CC, but I have already used what I've learned in his course to create a video. The first 9 lessons were already worth what I paid for the entire course. Thank you, Abba! You are an awesome teacher! You have me absolutely obsessed with creating right now! I highly recommend! You won't find this thorough of a course for this decent price!

Just bought this yesterday and cannot stop watching!!!! What a FANTASTIC teacher-- just love the way he explains everything. For someone like me (who has a zillion questions) it is perfect. As soon as he introduces a feature, he explains several aspects in such a way that's easy to grasp and remember. So, so happy I got this. Thank you Abba and CreativeLive!

I am only on lesson 19 and I am so glad I bought this class, so worth it and Abba packs so much information into these lessons its crazy. I will for sure have to come back and watch again when I need to remember to do stuff or need a refresher. He is funny and quirky and a great teacher. I so recommend this to anyone wanting to become a better video editor!! I am coming from being self taught and using iMovie and he makes it so simple and understandable. Can't wait to learn more :)
