Formatting Your Book for Amazon Kindle
When you upload a book for Kindle, it has to be formatted a specific way so that the text on a Kindle reader, people are able to zoom in zoom out, make that text bigger or smaller. It kind of has a flow to it. It's not like uploading just a PDF. Although you can do that for the Kindle select program where you're getting money for people reading your Kindle book by the page. And for some of the other things that are available on Amazon, you have to have it properly formatted. The easiest way to do that I found is you could do it yourself by downloading this Kindle packaging format app. So just click that download button, choose for PC or Mac. I'm gonna download it for Mac. It's going to save to your computer here. You can see some examples of what you can do. You can do some basic editing of the style, create a table of contents as well, just gonna install. All right. So now you're just going to open up it for when you open up for the first time it goes through some sort of instructions...
. We're just going to skip through that. I don't need early beta features and then I'm just going to click create, then click choose and what I need is a doc file. So from Microsoft or from Google Docs, I'm going to download this. So you want to make sure this is formatted pretty much finalized, although you can edit the formatting in Kindle create. I just found it easier to edit it all at your photos here as well. Um which is kind of cool. And then I'm just gonna download this as a doc X file, just put that on my desktop. And then I'm just going to find that file, open it and it's going to convert it into A the C All right. It says import successful. We're going to click continue. It has already determined the chapters which is awesome based off of the headings of our pages. If for some reason, one of these is not a chapter, you can edit it, you can uncheck the ones, but I'm gonna collect che check, accept selected and it also has the chapters over here. And let's see this one if it got, I don't think I edited all of this yet, but it looks like I'm missing a chapter. Oh Yeah, I forgot I have to edit this chapter, but I'm editing um I'm adding this chapter which if you are manually doing this, I'll say advanced focusing for landscape photography. What you can do now is you have your text editing on the right. Oops, I can select this line and then over here, I can just click the chapter title and that makes that a chapter title and it adds it to the outline over on the left hand page to edit the size because you might not want your chapter title to be this big of your title. You can go to formatting and you can make this a little bit smaller. And the beautiful thing is it does it for all of the chapter titles. You don't have to go through everyone. And so speaking of on the right hand side, you can see all of these other formatting options. You can make the first chapter, the first chapter of the book, the or first paragraph of each chapter. You have things like subheadings, block quotes, separators, poems, all these different things. Um And you can edit the formatting in terms of just the general theme. You can click the theme button up here. We have like modern, which is like the typical basic one. You have classic cosmos or a more. So that is great. If you're doing a little romance novel, classics. Nice for that classic style. I think modern works really well for educational content. You also have. What's the front matter here? This is your like copyright page. If you have an introduction, dedication, you would add the page here, just click the plus button, add the copyright here. It already actually has some information for the that you might want to create like a template. Although I would just go ahead and include the information that you have um created on your own copyright page that you might have written from chat GP T and is the copyright owner you, is it your company the year you can go in and edit this rights as well and then click create page. So here we have So the ISBN number and the cover design, this is going to have to be edited which you can click edit page to edit that page as well. If you don't want to create that copyright page here in the front mat or if you just have the text already from um maybe it's within the format of Google doc, you can just keep it there as well. Then basically you just wanna make sure you go through everything looks good. It's it, the images are appearing within the images, you need to add alt text. So within all these images, you can just add a little bit of description of what it is. Um So that's for people who are maybe visually impaired, they're listening to your book using um text to audio tools and they need to have a description of those, those book, those images, you can also adjust the size here as well. But really it's pretty basic. If you're just doing text, it should be pretty much ready to go and we're going to actually just click export, export and then export again and it's gonna export a file that is the right file type. You can also preview it. So click preview. This might be a good thing to do. You can preview what it looks like on a Kindle device. You can preview what happens when you make the text size be bigger because here's people can on Kindle can change the text uh font, the size and all of that, which is kind of cool. All right. So back on Amazon KDP, this is where you can upload your E book manuscript. So you just find your file. I'm just gonna find that file in here. We're just gonna find that file here. It's the doc X one that was exported in this folder and then it's going to upload once it uploads. Let's go to that Kindle Ebook content page for our other book, our photography challenge books. It should get a successful message. It will have a spell check and then it's time to start working on your cover, which we'll be doing in the next lesson. It looks like our book was uploaded successfully. It's processing our file, it's probably doing a spell check as well. And then in the next lesson, I'm going to show you how to create an ebook cover.

I have been using ChatGPT since early this year and love it, but there's always more to learn to pass along to clients. What a great, practical class with cookbook like instructions for getting set up and using it on various platforms. Funny enough, I was uploading art I created in AI and doctored up in photoshop while I was listening :) Well done!
