Class Introduction
Hi, and welcome to CreativeLive. I'm your instructor for today, Khara Plicanic. And today we are going to be talking about design and designing greeting cards, particularly. So I've been a professional photographer for a long time and done a lot of graphic design work. Designed a lot of templates for myself as well as other photographers. And I know that for some people it can be a really big part of their business. Or for some people, that's what their entire business is built around. So we're gonna be talking about some great ways that you can do some fun and easy designs today. I would love to see what you guys are making out there so feel free to connect with me at kharaplicanic.com and share your work that you create. On Instagram you can tag me @kplicanic and we're going to be using the #clcards. So anything that you make, that you want to share, please do and I'm gonna be really looking forward to seeing that. So here's what we're gonna be doing today. We're going to walk throug...
h the process of creating three different cards. So when I was thinking about greeting cards and what might be fun, I thought, what are three common things that people say to each other? One is I love you, so we're going to be making sort of a love interest card. Another is, thank you. And then lastly something we should maybe be saying more of is, I'm sorry. So we're going to design those three pieces today and I'm gonna walk you through that whole process. And along the way, you're gonna learn how to work with type, how to work with images and combining those things in Photo Shop as well as how to work with templates and vendors, and different things to consider when you are putting together your designs and deciding what you want to make or how you want to do it. So that's the plan for today. Things that you're going to need to be able to put this all together today. You're gonna need Photo Shop, obviously. If you don't already have it, you can download a free 30 day trial from Adobe.com. So you want to definitely get your hands on that. You also want to have some fonts on your system. So I'm assuming you probably have a lot already. There are a lot of sources on the internet to go out and find more fonts. And I'll be sharing some of my favorites with you as we progress through everything. You're also gonna want some design elements. I'll also be sharing some with you. I'll be showing you how we can make some of our own and where you can get those. So those can be anything from doodles, to textures, or patterns, and they add some really nice touches to our design. So we'll be working with those as well. When you are putting together these designs, it also helps to have the design specs. So whatever finished piece that you're gonna be making, you wanna know what size it's gonna be and who's gonna be printing it. So you'll want to have design specs on hand too. And today we'll be using some templates from one of my favorite vendors, Mpix. And I'll show you how those work and what they look like and how you use them. And lastly, I want to let you know that I put together some resources for you. You will not only get the files that I'm working with, the image files, but you'll also get a resource guide pointing out all the different fonts that we'll be using and links to where you can find all of those as well. Along with some extras that I just find really useful and I use a lot. So, it's just sort of my favorite list of those different things. Okay, so that said, let's go ahead and get started talking about how this process is gonna work.

I bought this class and love it! I learned so much - Khara is a great teacher. She has packed in heaps of detail and new ideas, and is very easy to listen to. I am now a Creative Market addict and have had lots of fun making my own cards. Thanks Khara!

I found this really really useful in many ways, like photoshop shortcuts, how to incorporate glyphs and patterns and more. I bought the Sunshine Daisies and the Fontbox pkgs and also discovered that a year ago I had purchased some other packages with glyphs/patterns/dingbat fonts and brushes and never really knew how to use until this. I have watched portions over and over because I didn't take very good notes. Khara is a great instructor. I recommend her, too.

Khara has really inspired me to try making my own cards. She has taken the intimidation factor out of the process for me. I'm purchasing her class, but I sincerely hope she'll do a follow-up class with yet more ideas. I'd particularly like to see her work through a folded card with text inside. I must say that as a teacher I think she is one of the best I've seen yet on Creative Live. She doesn't flit around too fast and really explains when she is doing (and UN-doing) various steps. Thank you, Khara!
