Adding a Second Color with Texture

So while you guys were drying, I'm gonna set up for the second color, so what to use? Do you follow a particular color scheme when you're doing this so you just kind of tend to win it mood you're in, I'm kind of like whatever mood I'm in a lot of times when I start a piece I don't go into stuff with an idea of today I am going to paint something that has poppies on it and that it I just usually let stuff of all I find that when I go in with a preconceived idea, I'm always disappointed when I make so um it's kind of like what I'm thinking about what speaks to me at that moment in time I grab it and I go to work, but I'm also the person who will walk away from it for like three days and come back and be like but usually it works for me a lot better than saying okay, I know I want to use these four colors I'll challenge myself that way. There was one day I did a project all of gray's, blacks and whites and this is normally my palate like right and stuff and I learned a lot in terms of mak...

ing art for myself and values of lights and darks and and all the grays in between, so that was a fun exercise for me I think that's a good exercise for anybody is to kind of do that kind of thing, but when it comes to this stuff, I just go with what speaks to my heart at the moment, so so I'm doing exactly what I said I wasn't you don't do, and I'm going for green for my liking, but again, I'm dry so it's all good, so what we're gonna do now is a nice thing to like. I said you could take it off in big chunks with water, but you can also take off like little bits, so I'm going to do is just pick a spot and I'm gonna put my green paint on fairly thick so that it covers I don't want it super thinks I kind of want the green that really stand out over the pink, so I'm gonna put it on pretty thick, but again, I want two thick enough that it doesn't dry immediately and covers, but I want to make sure it doesn't. I don't want to move so slow that drives before way have a chance to do anything. And anything I would tell people about paints too is I, like I said, I have tons of different types if you're just starting out there's, nothing wrong with going to the craft section and buying those little tubes that are ninety nine cents just squirt bottle, you're just going to get a different result like these air heavy body, so they're thicker, but if you don't want to invest in expensive acrylic paints, thanks too expensive, and I don't think that these were that bad, but if you really want to start out on the low end there's nothing wrong with that just know that they're going to be a little less thick. Um, and you may have to do a couple coats, but if you're just starting out and you don't want to put a huge investment in, you know, there's, nothing wrong with grabbing the ones that you see for sixty nine cents, ninety nine cents in an array of every color under the sun because you're not comfortable with mixing and things like that. It's a great way to start, okay, so I got the sign and this is the tricky part. This is the hardest part of the whole thing is not going one big squirt we're just going to take in just your going to kind of really slowly ah, hold it like this, you get like these little bursts of drops instead of one big spray, okay? And what you're going to do is just kind of dropped those drops on what you just did, and you could kind of look at it and see where they're at and just leave those little drops for a second, and what they start to do is get into the paint. And then we'll take the paper towel and we'll pull it off and you'll have little holes of color of the pink come through where we've taken the greenaway. If I didn't talk too long in the city dry while we were doing so, one more squirt for good measure, but it's kind of like a relief technique that you, khun d'oh now these air super patterning. So we'll see if we get pattern, too. Wei didn't get pattern, too. What she would see we didn't have pattern on the thes is a little more there's, a spot where it's coming up. So have you ever been on live tv in front of a lot of people and had something go completely the way it's not supposed to go because that's what's happening right now, it's. All right, let's. See, this is what I said. You can screw it up that's fine I'm going in with like the edge of it now because I let the whole paper tell down this paper hotels get so much texture and you rip it up and you can see like it's kind of pretty that was not the effect we were going for so I'm going in where each little dot is in sucking at home with the corner and then we'll get those little dots and there's a couple right here that really turned out well um and I should say like I I like how it looks I am at home I actually um have rags that I use that air like really old pillow cases things like that so it's more of a smooth and those work really well in the nice thing about those is you don't care what they look like you could throw in the washer and keep reusing them and those work really well for this technique to but we'll get some of them so okay so another way to add texture is take a paper towel laying over and just lifted off sick look at that a success so we're just gonna add texture now any way that you want to this part there's a couple of really good ones right here well as you're doing that stephanie someone from um online who's tuning in is wondering how is keeping an art journal helped you evolve is an artist one for me the big thing is as I was always that kid in school that was a doodler idea like I had a sharpie and my notebook by the end of the first week I needed a new notebook that because the inside was full but because the cover was built back cover was filled and what I found is now as an adult carrying it with me is I draw a lot more than I used to and I've found a style of doodling I really like that I have found really works for me um as an artist it's helped me try different things without spending twenty dollars on the canvas or anything like that and I can mess around and play with it and I also do stuff in my art journal because it's mine that nobody else sees and so you think you get stuff out sometimes in an art journal that you don't get out just stuff, you know that stuff that we all carry around and get that out in my art journal in ways that sometimes it doesn't come out on the canvas that's gonna hang in my house so I'm upset about something I think we're more daring and our journals sometimes and we trying new things and we say things that we may not like your diary it's just visual and I think you say things in there and do things in there but are actually more meaningful than you d'oh on a piece that's going hang somewhere that people are going to see because you don't want to answer the question if it's hanging in your living room and I was like, oh my gosh that's so why did you do that? You know what is in your life? You don't want to answer that question, but you couldn't do that and you're our journal is it's a safe place and it sounds so silly it's just you know from here to there but there's just something about it and you can try something over and over and over again there and it's just this place toe play with materials and play with ideas and I also use it a lot I'm a big quote collector like I'm madore hq you posted quote on instagram and I follow you I would have taken a picture of it with my iphone and that is what it is like I should have like hundreds of pictures of my children I have more pictures of everybody else's random quotes but I probably know my kids sorry guys love you but that's just how I am and so for me it's just I take those quotes than and I practice different lettering techniques I practice different doodling techniques and then add a quote in things like that so for me it's really just kind of this place to keep inspiration and I'll go back to that allow reference that when I'm working on pieces to like somebody did something in my art journal that I really liked that I wanted to put on a canvas and so I'll go back and look at it and say ok may not translate this way but if I do this I can do that and then also I'm an instagram stalker so if I see somebody do like a really cool technique that they're willing to share that's a good place for me is to try it on a small scale and replicated and say I like how they did that but I wouldn't use that color I wouldn't use that material I might do it with this they're in oil painter I like acrylics how can I get a similar look or feel that way and then I can try new stuff so here we go yes um I know you're just mentioning different medias and stuff but I know you're using acrylics here have you ever worked with water colors on top of I have you just want to make sure that you use like the clear just so over it because you need something with some too teo it here that watercolor teo and so if you try to do it over this it's just gonna puddle it's not really going toe do anything so you just have to have that textural base of the clear, just so for it to grip onto okay, I'm gonna drive this fail, failing way. Got cool textures, though. It's. Fine. I'm gonna try this and then then we're gonna make a real mess, so I hope you're ready. You might. You guys might want to make a little space because we're goingto turn the canvas. I'll prep you now we're gonna turn the key ofhis okay and at another color. But we're going to spray it with water guns so that it runs. So it's going to spread this way a little bit and then it's going to run down so that you guys were prepped for a little nastiness, you've got your phone or something on the table. You might want to move it everything I'll tell you guys, what the heat so you can hold it in one spot, but if you pull it too long, you might start to smell something I mean something's burning, some of it just a little cautionary tale from some burnt paper once they do get really hot.

Wonderful class, so much fun and I love how Stephanie makes you feel so relaxed and that things will be great even if you've never tried something like this before. I wanted to watch the course to get the idea of it, now I can't wait to get the supplies and watch again while trying it out myself. Thanks!

This was very informative, and quite fun to watch. I liked that the instructor endorsed the idea of using items that you have onhand; repurposing old books and other items to use until you really know where your style lies. I also like that she shared the names of products she truly believed were worth purchasing, without being pushy. This art form encourages "play" and is quite forgiving if you have a "happy little accident", because it's not difficult to cover the area in question, to try something different. I'm quite happy that I viewed this class!

Great class. Stephenie is a fun teacher. I really enjoyed it and loved the idea of using melted crayons.
