Adding Doodling
I'm going to grab this thing and I'm going to go for it so I've got my pen and the reason why we want to make sure that jessie was really dry because if you try to put your pen to the jets so when it's not your clog up your pen and then it's not going to work and we use the clear just so with the pen because otherwise it may not all have here nicely like it will with if you guys feel it it's kind of gritty almost you're really fine sandpaper kind of feel to it once it's dry so it really grabs on to what you put on top of it so I'm going for it and again I am not about straight lines perfect lines anything like that so for me it's just ok there's where the white part is I just draw around I don't do it twice so that it's kind of waving curvy and not perfect on any level whatsoever and then I just pick a spot and I go for it so I'm gonna add in a little scallop boo waves here and just work around that space I told you this is when I get my most quiet so I'll get lost in the us this is ho...
w if having a bad day or I've got something on my mind our problem we need to solve I'll do this and then it just this to me is as effective as meditation is for other people. I do both, and I always feel like I'm definitely in a better state after doing this because it's kind of meditative, meditative all on its own, I'm just going to keep on. I turned my piece a lot like I constantly move stuff, so feel free to move it around to where you're comfortable and you feel like you've got the best stability with your hands and things like that. I will take my art journal out on the airplane and use that little tray that isn't even big enough to hold a can of soda and try to art journal on there. I'm sure I drive the person next me crazy, but I'm constantly doing this motion of like, let me keep moving around while you're trying to take a nap, but I always say bring it to you don't try to go to x if you try to force it by not moving it where it's easy, then that's when you go doesn't look the way I wanted it to look so it's better off to move it to where it's comfortable for you more than anything else, so we're just going to keep meditating here. That's we're doing that I'm kind of curious to hear about everyone else's background and mixed media and maybe how you got started or if this is your first time exploring this aspect of it when we go to star on the right over here I have been exploring mixed media for um well over eight years now and this is the first time I worked on would like this so it's pretty exciting yeah, something new for me so I'm pretty new about a year doing this and I'm just playing around I used to paper scrap book and I'm doing that all digital now so I needed something that was textile so mixed media are journaling, right? This has been really helpful for me for doing that is there something that you were doing before this that was maybe similar? That kind of was your gateway to, well, the paper scrap booking welcome the tactical way heartedly that was my tactical creative outlet and so now I've since I'm doing that all digital now making cards and our journaling and ca lodging and things like that knife cool? Well, I'm pretty new to mixed media I've been doing a lot of fashion d I wise creating jewelry, accessories, things like that, but I found in the last year have been doing more art, journaling and and getting back to a lot of doing more fine art and things like that and if find it very relaxing and meditative as well right? So I'm really enjoying doing this class yeah I mean for me awesome I'm one of those gay boy drug druggies too yeah totally I still love describe like but I remember when the gel otto's came out I'm like those air pretty I want to play with those and it's seriously that kind of got me in teo experimenting with different colors and I started in art journal and I love to do things with stencils of modeling, paste and texture and you know, I've just kind of been playing around yeah different things you do you keep in our journal for most of the kind of similar reasons that stephanie docked about keeping this our journal just you know, this sort of meditation and definitely uh I'll just sit down and sometimes it will be an hour you know, it has gone by that I've just had it's it's very relaxing a knife I am a textile person so I like to so and so mix and match textiles so I don't know I thought this would be fun way to yeah so you deal with more fabrics and papers that rape all fabric yeah so and I use all reclaimed materials so it's a little bit mix and match similar but with the sewing machine instead of paint from yeah, I think that's well, I'm sure stephanie do you work with do you find yourself mixing mixed media with fabric and kind of textile and or are you just you know, I I always get nervous because I can't so at also sowing when they were talking over break and it was like she's like, oh yeah, I do this I might maiken barely make a pillow, but I I like to use it um we talked earlier about you know can use that when you're dekel polishing and things like that and I'll do that we're all take scraps of fabric and use it that way I see all these amazing art journals that people have done that are all fabric and what they can do with it and I aspire to that someday but it's not something I'm really good I love using I'm just playing canvas fabric for things aside just a based media so it's just a much thinner version but haven't ventured yet into some of the really cool stuff that people are doing because my sewing machine and I are not friends and so the thought of having to like put party with part be using a sewing machine just makes me a little nervous extension of your paintbrush I should I should you know and um one of that we had talked before about artists that following there's a lot of people out there right now we're doing a lot of like free motion stitching sounds like they're taking their doodles and then free motioning them on fabrics and stuff and I'm like ok, I need to learn how to do that because that doesn't have to be a straight line I'm probably fine it's like I want to learn how to do the free motion stuff because that just looks really, really cool you can do all this cool stuff you definitely I think for me it comes down to a patient's level and the fact that you may have to use an iron and like the thought of having to use an iron to me is just like that I don't have time for that iron to melt crown I did but it wasn't make crisp, clean, lovely little pieces of fabric I'm just I'm not good I'm more of ah slap it on there and see how it goes where I feel like with fabric sometimes you have to be more precise and I and I know that that's just a thing I have in my head that I just have to get over the old rules air yeah gone now I'm going to finish up this little bit here and then I'm going to show you guys just a little bit of lettering um stuff you can we're just gonna write a little something on here I had put take aim on that one you can use that because we're gonna add our little arrow on here later, or if you wanted to say something else, feel free, I want to finish up my last layer of little rain bows, and this is one of those things and are first class an intruder mixed media way, we're adding with the cran and talking about how that can just go on forever, and you can just really get sucked in tow, dropping little bits of korean under things, and I'm like that with this, I could just keep adding row after row of little rainbow swirls, because she's, so hypnotic at some level, kind of going further a little bit about our journal entry stuff that we were talking about. I'm with some of you here in the class of virginia from online, says I find art journaling difficult because I look at them as a finished art piece and themselves, and I feel like I can't make mistakes, so I don't get past that first, page says. I guess I want to plan the whole thing every page before I start, but it looks cohesive and that's kind of how I am, so I you know what that was? The hardest thing for me when I got started, because I would look at are journalists who did absolutely amazing work, and their journals are you know, full works of our start to finish the cover the back page I mean everything you know, they're thes three d interactive experiences and that was really intimidating to make, so I went to a conference and I saw those and I'm like, well, I want our journal but that to me that was the end all be all and that had to be the way that it was and I realized that it's no different than journaling in general you can do it in a spiral notebook with a pencil in the worst handwriting or you can go buy yourself a thirty dollars journal in a fountain pen and right in calligraphy and there's everything in between. And once I realized that it could be a composition notebook or it could be a nice art journal or it could be something handmade with stitch bound sides, I kind of let that go and I and I realized it didn't have to be finished art piece because who's going to see it it's like it's like your regular journal unless there's something in there that you really want to share it is for you and it's for you, teo kind of experiment and learn and play and be free tio there's things that come out of my art journaling that never have come out in like a written journal and it's just the way that you play with the materials and things like that and there's still times where I look at him like, oh, that's, not a finished thing, and I'll be like, oh, that's, right, it's my art journal that's ok, but it just kind of have to remind yourself of that and kind of, um, not be so hard on yourself. I think we I love social media for so many reasons and there's so many great examples of amazing artists out there and amazing art journal er's out there, but I think sometimes it becomes very intimidating for us who just are maybe it's starting out or just dabbling, and you feel like, ok, I did it! I should share on instagram, but it's not nearly as good as someone sos or I want to put on facebook, but what if somebody says something about it? And I think just to remember that you're our journalist, the same as any other journal? If you don't want to share it, you don't have teo and just fuckem use it to be yourself and experiment, and I think we just put too much pressure on ourselves in this digital age to live up to expectations that aren't, you know, going to be something we can all dio right, so just go for it.
