What are Adjustment Layers?

We're going to start off with talking about what adjustment layers are, how they're used in graphic design, and then we're gonna talk about how they're used in photography, and then we'll talk about how they're used in video, and then after that, we're going to dive into a little color lighting correction using levels and curves, and we're gonna do a little selective lighten and darkening. We're going toe, lighten some eyes and irises and a little bit of teeth and lighten some wrinkles and dark and some shines all kinds of fun things that you would need to do on portrait, sir, people pictures, then we're going to look as zapping color cast with the color balance adjustment layers howto apply adjustment layers to single layers and sort of a whole bunch of layers. We're going to boost color with vibrant, sweeping change color with heat and saturation, and we're going to do well calorie mixing with selective color adjustment layers they were going to have a whole lot of fun converting col...

or images into black and white using a couple of different methods, and then we're going to take a look at how to do some partial color effects, which you're one of my favorite things to do and photoshopped back the mermaid back yonder on the wall is a fun, partial color effect. And last but not least, we're gonna tent some images with some really beautiful color overlays, and they were going to do a few high contest effect. So we have a lot of super fun things to do today, all non distracted because it's adjustment layers. But first, I would like to invite you to my facebook party. If you want to get in touch with me on and I hope you will, you can go to my website at photo lisa dot com, their idols and gobs of free tutorials there for the taking on elements and photo shop and all kinds of wonderful things. If you wantto interact with me on twitter, my handle is at photo lisa and then released it with an e and over on facebook. My facebook fan pages facebook dot com slash photo lisa and if you click the like button, then I hope that you will. Then you can download a free to page. Did he cheat on photoshopped photo shot elements and I photo. All right, I also have a few books. The publisher o'reilly has been kind enough to give us a great discount on these things. During the workshop, you can get forty percent off the print version or fifty percent off the e book on any of these missing manuals. And to do that, you're going to go to o'reilly's website. So o'reilly dot com and then you'll enter the code off dea check out so remember author and then just lop off the last half the word and put a de in there. Okay, but this I just wanted tio jump in and say that those course files when you purchase the course, the exercise files, images that lisa will be working through are ready to go up on our web site, so when you purchase, of course, please go ahead and start downloading those there are a ton of they would do so it might take a little while to download. I think it's a gig that way because we're going to play with video a little bit. Oh, nice, so mean, and those files are honking big. So all right, back over to you think all right, so adjustment layers just to give you a little bit of an overview, these are some of the things that they're good for, um but first, I want to point out that the whole reason that we're using adjustment layers is basically it's your way of telling photo shop, a photoshopped, this thing I'm going to do to my and there's this change don't do it too, the image layer, if you would do it on a whole other layer that builds in a lot of anything flexibility and your documents, because you can lower the opacity of that layer. If the change is a little too strong, you can throw the darn thing away if you don't like the effect or if your client doesn't like the effect so it's ah, they come with a layer mask automatically, so that gives you a way to hide that particular adjustment from perhaps the parts of your image that don't need it that's real important when we get into color correcting because you may need to correct the sky was your foreground may be fine, and so on and so forth, they are fabulous for creating new background. Okay, so if you do a fancy shmancy edge effect, perhaps like the one that we learned to do yesterday with a refined and dialog box, uh, then you need a new background so you can use thes adjustment layers to create new colored backgrounds, are they're solid color filled with a pattern or radiant they are great for leaving room for text. I cannot tell you how many postcards I've created for photographers in my own business in boulder, colorado, and is such an easy thing. Teo teo, bring in a prize winning photo and then create a soft fade to a solid color to make room for text. Think wedding announcements, invitations, gallery showings and so forth. They're also great for fading video in an hour case, a rogue armies in a solid color adjustment layer or fill air. Rather, tio make a nice black background to fade up our wedding video and then faded back down. They're also good for color and lining. Correction. Tinting your photos. A fabulous way to add a little bit more richness and depth to your images. They're great for creating black and white images from color and for partial color effects, and, of course, for creating super high contrast effects.
