Importing Photos

This basic photo downloader dialogue doesn't even show you some nails of all the images on that memory card. See, we've only got one image right here, okay, so if you wanted to import some images, but not all of them, this isn't going to help you right here. So what we want, tio soon as you see this dialogue is you want a peek down at the bottom left and I'll zoom in so you could see it a little bit better. There it is. You want to click that advanced dialogue button? Why the heck? It doesn't just go to that automatically is beyond me because it's not like, really consumer level like computer newbies air going to be using bridge to import their photos right there going to be using I photo or some equivalent on, you know, a pc, so click the advanced dialogue and don't ever look back, all right, you're going to leave it on that. This is where a lot of the real power of using bridge for importing photos comes from first of all, you can tell bridge where you want the photos to go okay so click the choose button and this is just a standard navigation box so where do you want to save your pictures okay well when I say them in the pictures folder and my own work flow I always create on a vent folder in case so for these I would call it toe lynn or mexico or what happy and click create and when you click open then you see that reflected up here in the save options so is telling you again where exactly the shots were going to go now you can choose to create some folders if you want so let's say you haven't imported your photos for a while and you've been on vacation for several weeks then you can use this sub menu to split them up according to date what have you here's where you can choose to remain your files I highly recommend this you know yes you can do the battery naming that we did earlier in bridge but if you're using bridge to import your files that's ridiculous go ahead and name them now and save yourself some time so under the renamed files you can choose to do a custom name or you can use one of bridges templates here one of them that I like to do is there should be a year as well as a custom name let's do this one down here months a year custom name plus shot date there we go. Now, this is a bug right here. You can't really even see all of the text, but what we've got is a preset so bridges going to rename these with whatever I enter here in this field that you can't see all of you and it's going to tack on the day I took the photo so I could call these to loom underscore if you want or not. And then this right here is exactly what you're photo name is going to end up looking like k. Other are options that we've got here include the ability to pop with these photos open and bridge as soon as they're finished importing okay, and bridge is going to do all the cashing. Ok, when we do this, you can convert the files to digital negative. You can delete the original files. Please don't ever do that. Please, please, please don't ever, ever, ever check this check box if you take this check box than bridges going to delete these photos during the import process, if something happens, you're cat flies across the room and disconnect the cable or you get interrupted you spill something, if anything bad goes wrong with that import, you're screwed because the files don't live on your camera anymore, so please don't ever, ever, ever check that in my opinion, it's far better to delete the files back in the camera so what I do is when I'm done with this import, I'll take the memory card, pop it back into the camera and I'll use the cameras may need to reform at the card that does a couple of different things it erases the patriots, so I've got a you know, a full memory card to work with again, but it also kind of reorganizes that memory car because memory cars they're like tiny little hard drives there's nothing spinning in them obviously what they're like tiny little drives a little flash drives and they can get corrupted for whatever reason why does any file get corrupted? Nobody knows so that is a good kind of housekeeping thing to do in regard to memory card, so don't delete him here delayed um and camera here is your automatic backup option this is just the best thing since sliced bread it really, really is ah light room has a similar feature under that question will be coming up in the chat rooms black room has an automatic backup feature every time you launch the program it will try toe back up your photos you can skip the back up or, you know back up every time we launch that's pretty cool, but here in bridge, if we choose save copies to then we get to choose another location so you could either duplicate the photos on a hard drive if you don't want to do that but I think a better use for it is to if you've got a big external drive plugged into your computer, then turn on save copies to and then click the choose button and the navigate to that other drive okay, so on import bridge will be backing up your photos and I think that is just incredible talk about sleeping better at night. Another thing you can do is to apply and meditated template remember those meditated templates we made earlier? Well, they're accessible right here in the photo downloader dialog box so if you've created that meditated template you can assign it and attach it to all these photos right here on important now even if you don't have a template set up, you can still put in copyright information right here so depends on how much info you want to add to the meditative and then last but not least we're going to click get media, which is an odd way of saying import import would been shorter and now bridges importing all those photos then this won't take very long because we didn't choose to import all of them there we go there's our photos honkin big iguanas everywhere so in nancy we've got all these custom names and we've got our metadata attach if we had our external drive plugged in and we did that, save copy option, we'd have a backup already it's really a great way to import your photos again if you're using light room, you may not want to use bridge to import your photos if you're using light room, you've paid three hundred dollars for it, and if you don't have it well, you can do a lot of the same things by using bridge. Any questions on importing photos definitely has always, um just a quick one. Is there any way to add the key words while you're importing? Unfortunately, not unless you put keywords in meditated templates that would be the way to do that, so you could conceivably have a meditated template for, you know, your flower shot. Your portrait here are not client by client basis that that would be a great reason to put client information in and meditate a template if you're going to use bridge to import your photos, boy, that that would really be a time saver, because if you remember when we were up here in the file info dialogue, we got key words there so you can you could set those up ahead of time for a client and then just have it attached to the photo that being nice timesaver, thanks for asking that question great, um, mrs p says is there a way to have bridging norm duplicate downloads of the same file? I forgot to delete photos from my card and then end up with two copies the next time I haven't downloaded from my card that is a great question I think if bridge sees duplicates they will not immediately be selected for import so let's go back to that dialogue she's going to ask you this do you want to use me to download all photos all the time?
