Importing Photos

Let's take a look at how to import photos course she could do it a couple different ways perhaps the easiest is to click the whole camera icon towards the top okay and shoes get photos from camera you can also access that from the file menu file get photos from camera right there so it doesn't matter which way you go about it tells him out all the way now the first time you click either that camera icon or you use the file menu bridge is going to ask you hey, I see that you're going to use me to enforce and photos would you like me to open any time I detect a camera or a memory card attached to the computer you can say yes or no if you say no or if you say yes rather and then you change your mind down the road you can go into bridge preferences and undo that so this is not a forever kind of decision point in your life right here okay, so I'm gonna go ahead and say no the first dialogue box that you see is called the photo downloader and it is all that useless not really useless but it'...

s not nearly nearly as exciting is the dialogue ammunition you next? So what this is is a very basic photo downloading option situation which if you're going to use bridge to import photos, why not go whole hog and just see what all the options are make a backup upon import and all kinds of wonderful things. This basic photo downloader dialogue doesn't even show you some nails of all the images on that memory card. See, we've only got one image right here, okay, so if you wanted to import some images, but not all of them, this isn't going to help you right here. So what we want, tio soon as you see this dialogue is you want a peek down at the bottom left and I'll zoom in so you could see it a little bit better. There it is. You want to click that advanced dialogue button? Why the heck? It doesn't just go to that automatically is beyond me because it's not like, really consumer level like computer newbies air going to be using bridge to import their photos right there going to be using I photo or some equivalent on, you know, a pc, so click the advanced dialogue and don't ever look back, all right, you're going to leave it on that. Now look what we've got. We've got all these wonderful options, and we can see all of the thumbnails that we're going to be importing, okay? My husband and I went tio, we were in mexico earlier in the week. No, this is monday. Last week we were in mexico, in toluene, actually, and we went to the ancient mayan ruins, and it was just amazing to see on this issue. That's what? Some of these pictures are right here, and a whole lot of martin readers guatemala tequila, anyway, so we can see all the different thumbnails here. And if I decided who I don't really want to import those two, because those suck, then you can just turn off the check box and it's a simple is that? Okay, now, let's, look at what else we have here. We can see the source of the images where they're coming from. Okay, if you happen to have a couple of different sources in there, you could choose between them. If you plug in the memory card while the style on boxes open, it's not going to automatically show up, so don't let that through you. You'll need to refresh that list till bridge. Hey, have another look. I've plugged in something else. So could be that tells you how many files are displayed, how maneer selected and date range of those photos. So that's captured eight. Now you can also choose down here, and to meet that previous area, you can use these two buttons to either uncheck all of these or to check all of them, okay, I'm going toe uncheck all them because I'm not going to make health sit through the import of all of my pictures from mexico. That would be mean, so now what we can do is come through here and select several, either by clicking one and shift clicking another one or commander control, clicking individually, and then when you have multiple thumbnails activated here in this window, you click the checkbox of one and that activates the check box for all of those, so you could either turn those selected photos on or turn those select photos off okay, so we'll go ahead and choose a few more because some of these will use in a web gallery, so I'm using a combination of clicking and shift clicking as well as command or control clicking, and we'll go ahead and add a few these as well, we'll stop right there, okay, so now I've got thirty six files, they're going to be imported for a total of ninety four megabytes, so now let's, take a look at our save options over here on the right. This is where a lot of the real power of using bridge for importing photos comes from first of all, you can tell bridge where you want the photos to go okay so click the choose button and this is just a standard navigation box so where do you want to save your pictures okay well when I say them in the pictures folder and my own work flow I always create on a vent folder in case so for these I would call it toe lynn or mexico or what happy and click create and when you click open then you see that reflected up here in the save options so is telling you again where exactly the shots were going to go now you can choose to create some folders if you want so let's say you haven't imported your photos for a while and you've been on vacation for several weeks then you can use this sub menu to split them up according to date what have you here's where you can choose to remain your files I highly recommend this you know yes you can do the battery naming that we did earlier in bridge but if you're using bridge to import your files that's ridiculous go ahead and name them now and save yourself some time so under the renamed files you can choose to do a custom name or you can use one of bridges templates here one of them that I like to do is there should be a year as well as a custom name let's do this one down here months a year custom name plus shot date there we go. Now, this is a bug right here. You can't really even see all of the text, but what we've got is a preset so bridges going to rename these with whatever I enter here in this field that you can't see all of you and it's going to tack on the day I took the photo so I could call these to loom underscore if you want or not. And then this right here is exactly what you're photo name is going to end up looking like k. Other are options that we've got here include the ability to pop with these photos open and bridge as soon as they're finished importing okay, and bridge is going to do all the cashing. Ok, when we do this, you can convert the files to digital negative. You can delete the original files. Please don't ever do that. Please, please, please don't ever, ever, ever check this check box if you take this check box than bridges going to delete these photos during the import process, if something happens, you're cat flies across the room and disconnect the cable or you get interrupted you spill something, if anything bad goes wrong with that import, you're screwed because the files don't live on your camera anymore, so please don't ever, ever, ever check that in my opinion, it's far better to delete the files back in the camera so what I do is when I'm done with this import, I'll take the memory card, pop it back into the camera and I'll use the cameras may need to reform at the card that does a couple of different things it erases the patriots, so I've got a you know, a full memory card to work with again, but it also kind of reorganizes that memory car because memory cars they're like tiny little hard drives there's nothing spinning in them obviously what they're like tiny little drives a little flash drives and they can get corrupted for whatever reason why does any file get corrupted? Nobody knows so that is a good kind of housekeeping thing to do in regard to memory card, so don't delete him here delayed um and camera here is your automatic backup option this is just the best thing since sliced bread it really, really is ah light room has a similar feature under that question will be coming up in the chat rooms black room has an automatic backup feature every time you launch the program it will try toe back up your photos you can skip the back up or, you know back up every time we launch that's pretty cool, but here in bridge, if we choose save copies to then we get to choose another location so you could either duplicate the photos on a hard drive if you don't want to do that but I think a better use for it is to if you've got a big external drive plugged into your computer, then turn on save copies to and then click the choose button and the navigate to that other drive okay, so on import bridge will be backing up your photos and I think that is just incredible talk about sleeping better at night. Another thing you can do is to apply and meditated template remember those meditated templates we made earlier? Well, they're accessible right here in the photo downloader dialog box so if you've created that meditated template you can assign it and attach it to all these photos right here on important now even if you don't have a template set up, you can still put in copyright information right here so depends on how much info you want to add to the meditative and then last but not least we're going to click get media, which is an odd way of saying import import would been shorter and now bridges importing all those photos then this won't take very long because we didn't choose to import all of them there we go there's our photos honkin big iguanas everywhere so in nancy we've got all these custom names and we've got our metadata attach if we had our external drive plugged in and we did that, save copy option, we'd have a backup already it's really a great way to import your photos again if you're using light room, you may not want to use bridge to import your photos if you're using light room, you've paid three hundred dollars for it, and if you don't have it well, you can do a lot of the same things by using bridge. Any questions on importing photos definitely has always, um just a quick one. Is there any way to add the key words while you're importing? Unfortunately, not unless you put keywords in meditated templates that would be the way to do that, so you could conceivably have a meditated template for, you know, your flower shot. Your portrait here are not client by client basis that that would be a great reason to put client information in and meditate a template if you're going to use bridge to import your photos, boy, that that would really be a time saver, because if you remember when we were up here in the file info dialogue, we got key words there so you can you could set those up ahead of time for a client and then just have it attached to the photo that being nice timesaver, thanks for asking that question great, um, mrs p says is there a way to have bridging norm duplicate downloads of the same file? I forgot to delete photos from my card and then end up with two copies the next time I haven't downloaded from my card that is a great question I think if bridge sees duplicates they will not immediately be selected for import so let's go back to that dialogue she's going to ask you this do you want to use me to download all photos all the time? But you can't say don't show again so we'll go into that so here we are now let's just test this let's see, I thought they were going to be great out like the ones that we downloaded I thought that would be like great out and not checked, but you'd still see the previous but they're not, so there may not be a way to deal with that duplicate situation and I know what she's talking about I do that all the time all the time that's one benefit of you know certainly I photo has a don't import duplicates and probably light room has that same kind of thing but doesn't look like we have here in bridge back in it it's cool otherwise well that's a great reason to get into the habit of swiping your card in camera after you download so just to clarify if that answers this question from tough photo is there an option to download images that you want and not at all? So just selecting particular ones? Oh, yeah. So what you would do? Because when you open this dialogue, it's going to assume that you want to import all the photos that it sees on that memory card, so what you would do is click the uncheck all button, and then he would just go back in and, like we did earlier, selectively choose the ones you want to download. But that's a really full memory card that can get tedious. That's a good job for an assistant. Um, patrick gail, I wondered if it's important to keep the ex mp data. It certainly doesn't hurt, you know you can. And patrick, they'll actually also asked what exactly is the ex mp data? Yeah, I knew that was to me. That's the meta data that's, you know, captured in camera. So if you want that carried along with you but see preserve current file name and in ex mp. So if, for whatever reason you ever needed to get back to that original file name, this check box here is really telling bridge hate stuff that original final name in the meta data. Because I might need it. It certainly doesn't hurt to turn that on, but the ex mp data is destroyed. Meditate in the metadata is going to come along anyway. But if, for whatever reason, you think you might need that original file name, then you can shove it in the meditated if you want.

I have purchased all of Lesas Deep dive classes and have learned so much. She makes it easy to understand and she gives you examples and goes through them more than once so you understand. This is the class that not only shows you how to but what you can do. She gives you ideas and she is a joy to watch and listen to. I can say enough good things about Lesas classes and I am so glad to have them in my tool box to refer back to anytime I am stumped on how to fix problem in Photoshop. Thank you Lesa!!

Lesa Snider did a fantastic job communicating the many uses, features, and benefits of Bridge through this course. Understanding how to use Bridge has changed the way that I manage my photos and information and by extension, the productivity of my business. This the second course taught by Lesa that I have taken. I give her and this course my highest recommendation!

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it! Review my page: E Cigarette Reviews at Jigsy
