Selecting and Filtering Images
So we had a lot of fun reactions in our studio audience here for folks who just did not know that that review mode existed don't feel bad nobody knows it exists so let's, take a look at that uh one more time, so we're going to go ahead and select the photos that we want tio review and then we're going to pop into review mode by pressing command be or control be and we get this nice bigger view mood if you want to reject an item, you're going to press the down arrow key thinking about like a thumbs down this one is definitely a thumbs down situation and to assign star ratings to these photos, you can simply press commander control one, two, three, four, five for however many stars you want or commander control zero to zero out any star rating whatsoever. So as you can see, this is a great way to review your photos quickly in at a large enough size where you can actually make an informed decision on ratings or whether or not you should reject the photo. If you want to zoom into details o...
n any of these images will go ahead usar lizard lizard lizard did you know? Did you know that way back the mayas used to eat lizard tacos? Oh yeah what's for dinner loser talk is you can use the loop tool if you just mouse over to one of the images, your cursor turns into magnifying glass and you get this zoomed in enlargement it's one hundred percent, by the way, that's, what size you're seeing inside the loop tool to move it around? You want to grab the little black part this little part right here, and that lets you scoot it over to be seen what you want nice a lizard, I've all creepy and, of course, to close the loop, you're going to click the tiny little x at the bottom, right? If you want to add any of these photos to a collection let's, say you're you confuse this worthy mode for anything it doesn't have to be for photos that you import think about if you're a designer, you know you're going through your stock image folder, and when you find an image that works for a particular project, he can simply click the little make me a temporary collection icon, which is this little icon right down here, I'm colonnaded temporary collection because it's kind of like creating a collection on the fly kind of like I'm sure everybody who's tuned in and in a studio has used I teams or an ipod at one point or another? Well, while you're listening to music on an ipod, you're away from your computer, right? So you're going through your music and you want to create a playlist on the fly is calling on the go play list so there's a little button that you can press and hold on the ipod that will add it tio like on the flyer on the go kind of playlist situation not a playlist that you've created in the computer but when you create on the fly that's what this is for collections so we could on the fly click this little button down here when we see images that'll work for a project or our favorite ones that we're seeing from a sit then we can quickly throw them into a collection right here so be easy for us to get back to those particular photos you can also rotate photos in review mode which is very handy you can do that by using the bracket keys and the bracket keys are found next year peaky on your keyboard ok so if I want to rotate it to the left I pressed the left bracket keefe I'm gonna rotate that photo to the right I personal right bracket key and again they're next to your peak he as in kate pierson of the b fifty two's my favorite singer not the same is my favorite band for those of you who are going to be remembering that for the rest of the week okay so he talked about rotating adding star ratings oh and if you forget what all kind of keyboard shortcuts you can use in this review mode, all you have to do is pressed the h key while you're in review mode h for help me, I can't remember any of my keyboard shark it's you actually don't have to keep the key held down, just tap it once toe, make that little list of keyboard shortcuts appear, and then tap it again to make it go away. So that's really handy right there and again, that is the h key for help, all kinds of different things. Ok, so let's press the escape key to get out of review mode and what's come over here to our malley flowers, but because this is the one better pictures, since you're going to be looking at on the rest of the day so let's, go ahead and pop into review mode. Actually, you don't have to select the individual photos. You can just have a folder activated and popping into review mode will show all those so let's quickly go through here and let's, reject some someone who reject this one that was not too bad. I might give that one a one using my arrow keys on what I like to do is keep, um, I'm left handed. Right handed rather so I like keeping my right hand on the arrow keys on the keyboard so I can quickly go back and forth and then I like keeping my other hand on the star rating keyboard shortcuts so by doing that, you can get really fast at this. Ok? So let's, reject that one let's give that one a three that's my favorite all time photo that I've ever shot reject him that looks like a deep but it there's another good one. We reject that one project so very quickly. Yeah, so we're seeing cheryl shots. Why is that several kind of the same shots must have been shooting in bursts, mowed her? We'll get a bunch of the same ones so let's reject that one get that wanted to reject reject tio hopes I to teo and rejected it. That was not bad. Ok, so you guys get the point very quickly you could come in here and reject and accept all kinds of photos, and once we go through the photos and I'm not going to make you sit through all of them, obviously I would run screaming for the hills. Then we're going to take a look at how tio get rid of the ones that we rejected ok, so let's call that done so let's get back out of ravine out by pressing escape and now what can we do with the's star ratings and stuff that we've applied in this rejection situation okay, so what we're gonna do is we're going to come up here to the view menu and you can see that we can choose to show or hide rejected files okay so we can turn that off and then we won't see any of those projected files that doesn't actually delete them and this means that we can't see them anymore okay and I believe the way you can delete the rejected files I haven't done it in a while it is appear somewhere okay, well look at that in a bit ok so now let's take a look at filtering are photos that were on ly seeing some of the best ones ok, ok, so we're gonna come over here to our filter panel and your filter panel if you're using the essentials workspace should be over here on the left hand side the bottom left again if you don't see it just tried appear to your window menu and then make sure it's turned on his got checkmark then it's turned on ok ok so now what we're gonna do is take a look at how we can filter these images again the filtering is happening on a folder by folder basis ok, so what can we see over here in the filter panel? We see all kinds of rating information I can see that within this folder, I've got one hundred eighty one photos that don't have any kind of rating at all. What if I want to write them? Well, click next to that filter, and what we're seeing right here is all the unrated photos very fast to go right back into review mode and continue rating those photos. Once you've turned on a filter, you need to turn it off to clear it. So you just click that little check mark again, and I'll go away okay? The rejected photos this is how you delete them it's, not a menu item, so under the reject filter right here, I can turn that on, and now I am on ly seeing the rejected photos that are in that particular photo, so I could quickly select all and lead them if I wanted. Now, you do need to bear in mind that if you delete them in bridge, you're deleting them from your hard drive because remember earlier we said, anything you do in bridge happens in the finder or when those explorer, so it is the equivalent of doing it, and one is doing it and the other, so if I delete these and I'm really okay with the leading them, then bridge is going to say, whoa, you are deleting some photos would you like to think about this? Um blah blah blah blah blah reject now the reason we're not seeing some of the other ones that I rejected in review mode a moment ago is I think I chose toe hide them so selimi use view show reject files to haider show files that have been rejected you can also if you want to bypass this dialog box, then instead of just pressing the delete key, you'd press command early on the mac or control delete on a pc so that let you bypass that so as you can also see, we can reject these files by pressing the delete key as well. So let's say you didn't use review mode and you haven't really applied a reject flag or marker to them, which is really what you're doing by saying rejecting your just flagging them that's all you're doing you could do that here tio so bridge is going to come up with this dialog box until you turn it off and say, don't show me the style of again any time you try to delete a file is going to say or you shoot it when I rejected instead but we can say the lead on that and it's going to say okay, seriously, are you really sure I'm going about to trash six files, okay, so throw them away okay now what will be interesting to see is that they still live in the max os trash and I'm sure it works the same way for the waste bin in windows you delete them in bridge, they get thrown in your computer's trash, you still have one more chance to save them, you know, by dragging them out of the trash, but if you empty your computer stress and they're gone framer so that's of note ok, so we're going to say, show him and finals there, okay, so now I'm not getting any files in my content area anybody know why this will trip you up because we're still seeing just the rejected files and we just threw them away. So that's, why there's nothing to display, so if you are viewing a folder and you've been using filtering and then you start seeing that there no items to display, just make sure you peek over at this filter panel and turn off those filters, and that will bring your content back. Okay? So I'm going to turn off the show hidden files because now I'm seeing ex mp data I don't want to shoot in files did it? So now since we've applied to start rating to some of them, you can see how easy it is to quickly drill down to the cream of the crop photos, right? So if I want to stick with my best to the very best, I'm going to turn on my three stars and my four stars, okay? So you can turn on multiple filters, okay? So very easy to rate and thus sort your photos. You've also got the ability to filter by keywords. This is another great thing, so I'm gonna turn off the star rating for a moment. Let's say you're in your main picture's folder or an event folder. What have you and you need to see all the images that you've not applied in the keywords tio super easy, click next to the new keywords filter and then go through an ad keywords those things okay, you might even want to allow yourself, oh, I don't know a special day to do this or save save this kind of thing, you know, working on your key wording and your meditate and all that for maybe the end of the afternoon, and when I when I say, treat yourself with your favorite beverage and that could be a nice cup of tea, I mean anything you want, you know, around five thirty could be a martini, but just something that makes you look forward to this task because it is a tour until you create the habit and certainly adding all this information, which is going to make bridge one hundred times more powerful as you could have you seen today it takes time to do that so if you need to use a hook or a treat to get yourself to sit down and do it maybe it's what you do it for hawk every day you know make yourself not class a t sit on it for a clock spent thirty minutes or an hour adding this information and then stop and then do something else for you know the next day for a clock you stop and continue to add this information it is worthwhile but if you break it up like that it will feel more manageable and you won't loathe it thinking about it ok, so again, any time I want to uh affect the filtering, you need to make sure that you click again turn the filter off clicking wants to turn it on and here's all my key words that have been applied to the photos in the currently active folder okay, so I can see all of the key words here that I've added if we keep scrolling down the filter panel see these air all collapsed like a window shade so we're gonna click there anybody, anybody flippy triangle toc the information contained in that module or attributes rather so I can see there was one modified today the rest of these were taken back on my birthday in two thousand ten hey here's a great way to limit what you're seeing tow either landscape or limit its orientation landscaper portrait so this is a great delayed answer to a question that we had earlier today is how can you search for photos like this it's not really a search but in any given folder you khun certainly limit the view to show you on ly portrait or only landscape which can be very handy you've also got aspect ratio to three or three to four you've got color profile information s so if if you know that anything shot over four hundred s o and your camera is crap ola probably not going to spend a whole lot of time processing those first submitting to stock photography services so you can isolate your eyes so sitting right there just go ahead and reject those babies and get it over with in mass so that's helpful it's that you got all this kind of stuff here you've got lin's information why balance so these are all great ways tio drill down into a subset of your images and it's just about making you faster and more efficient and here we are we have a little area in our filter panel call camera raw so we can see which of these images that we've not adjusted in camera rock simply by kick clicking that filter and then we could come in here and open these in camera raw from within bridge so I hope that we're beginning to see or, you know, continuing to appreciate the sheer power of this program it's really quite amazing we were talking about it it break that s a few people teach it and write about it. I've got a whole chapter on bridge in the photo shop cia six but that him I don't know it's kind of like the adobe step child or something people don't spend a lot of time really showing everybody what you can do with it so and last, but not least down here at the bottom, we've got copyright notice so easy way to see which of your images don't have the copyright information embedded in the metadata filter those babies out select all come up here to the tools menu upend mana data so really great stuff here, okay, so now what we're going to do is I'm going to make sure that my filters or turned off and they are okay, so before we move on or is there any questions on the whole review rating rejecting rotating situations? Yes, just one you had said earlier that when the when you use the star system, it can carry over to other programs like like like light room what about rejections? Well, that what will that that metadata also follow into other programs as well? That's a great question I'm tempted to say it does, but I have not actually tested it, so I can't be sure, but it seems like that would carry over is, you know, certainly from light winning two bridges are both adobe applications. I would think that that information is embedded in the metadata because it's just a marker, you know, like a flag him, not one percent sure on that that's a great question to experiment. Thank you. This I just have a quick question that I've actually seen earlier today, so I just want to ask it and suck tune was I in provence? I am peron's, my french is not good. Who asked, can you import raw or any of files? I saw that you could do it with the ngos, and I'm seeing that you have ciera two's there, but just for everyone to know. Oh, certainly, and thanks for bringing that up bridge can import whatever is on your memory card, so whatever format you're capturing bridge can import that's a great question, but back to ross, what we're going to do here and just a little bit is look at converting raw images to j pigs. Thanks. So if you use any kind of online lab, they don't take raw files because you're honking big right? So what you have to do is export the highest quality j peg that you can for printing online even if you're printing. If you are having your local camera store do the printing for you, which is often easier than the madness that is color management course. Once eddie does his class way, will all the experts of that but it can be a bit manning in paper and ink is really expensive, so it can be easier just to have somebody else do the printing rather than yourself. But nobody's gonna take raw files so you need a way, tio change those quickly from rod high quality j pigs and bridge is a great way, tio tackle that. But we're going to look at doing that here in just a little bit. Do you have a question? Do yeah. It's a quick. I always have this in my mind. The question. Once in a while I would have the shooter j peg and raw on. So I downloaded my computer him in inbreds. Does it combined the the chipping and iraq? Was it graze toe files, right? Will they be separate files that what you could do is you could group them into a stack? If you you know that way, you just clean up what you're seeing in your your bridge content window, but but if you're choosing on your camera to capture both a j peg and a rod, and when you import, you're going to end up with both of them perrine bridge. But what you would have let's say, for example, that I had shot j pig and raw here I'd have those images side by side, so they'd be duplicated bridge is not going to automatically stack your photos the only way that bridge automatically creates a stack of images and really it's just hiding them in a stack like a stack of paper, right? It's stacking your images, you choose which one goes on top, but they're all there, but bridges not do automatically unless you have created an hdr image, which stands for high dynamic range, where you're merging several exposures bridge will automatically group your images into a stack in this situation, as well as creating panorama as brittle create a stack that way, so if you do that stuff and photoshopped me, come back over and bridge, you're going to see that your photos air stacked, so if you're scrolling through your images and you come across the staff, I don't have one yet, but we're going to make one then you know, what's happened, oh, I must have done some stitching or some exposure emerging, so that's how that happens

I have purchased all of Lesas Deep dive classes and have learned so much. She makes it easy to understand and she gives you examples and goes through them more than once so you understand. This is the class that not only shows you how to but what you can do. She gives you ideas and she is a joy to watch and listen to. I can say enough good things about Lesas classes and I am so glad to have them in my tool box to refer back to anytime I am stumped on how to fix problem in Photoshop. Thank you Lesa!!

Lesa Snider did a fantastic job communicating the many uses, features, and benefits of Bridge through this course. Understanding how to use Bridge has changed the way that I manage my photos and information and by extension, the productivity of my business. This the second course taught by Lesa that I have taken. I give her and this course my highest recommendation!

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it! Review my page: E Cigarette Reviews at Jigsy
