How to Launch a Podcast in 1 Week
I launched my podcast in one week. So I want to show you guys how you can launch your podcast in one week. It is my goal for everybody watching to actually be able to put their podcast out next week. And I want to know about it when you do. You can tag me on Instagram #SwigerLive when your podcast goes live or as you're working on it. I want to hear about it. So these are the steps to launch in one week. We're gonna go through them step-by-step. I'm gonna kind of do an overview now and then throughout the day we'll go through each one in detail. So each step of this; how to launch in one week, has many worksheet pages in the workbook that will walk you through each step for yourself, because it's really my goal, that you guys walk away knowing exactly what you'll do with your own podcast, not just the theory of how to do it. So I showed you Auphonic really quickly, you can go back to the recording and watch that slower to see exactly what to do. So, the first step is to decide. You're ...
gonna decide on your format, your content, and your name. Now, these are decisions that hang people up, so I've got a process that's gonna walk you through it, and just help you make the decision so you can make the decision really quickly. So your format, your content, your name. The next step is you're gonna make an image. This is actually an image from the last time I was at CreativeLive with my producer Justin. You're gonna make an image that will be the thumbnail that goes on iTunes, I'm gonna show you mine in a little bit, but something that's, like, a really clear great colorful picture, then with some font on it. When you think about making an image, it doesn't have to be super technically difficult. You can use Canva. It's one of my favorite apps. It's a free app that will let you make an image and put text on any picture you have. The main thing to keep in mind with your image for your podcast is that you want the font to be big and readable, because it's gonna be teeny tiny on people's phones. They're gonna get just a tiny little picture to look at, but if they're looking on their computer it's gonna be bigger. So, iTunes has guidelines for what those images should look like. You wanna make your image meet iTunes' guidelines. They change them up all the time so I've linked to them in the resource guide, but an image, gonna be super quick to make, you're gonna use Canva, and you're gonna use iTunes' guidelines. It's gonna be very easy. And don't stress over it. You can always change it in the future, you don't have to get it perfect right up front. Then the next step will be to record and intro and an outro. So an intro is the thing that you hear at the beginning of the podcast, often it's music, it's a little audio cue, this is what you're listening to. An outro is the thing that leads you out of the podcast. We're gonna talk about how to make those effective for your business, to lead people back to your website. It's the thing that says, thanks for listening and have a great day. It can be super simple. When you record these separately and then upload them to Auphonic, they're gonna get attached to your recording automatically whenever you send a recording through the production. So that's why I say, do this step first, so that they're in there, you'll upload them on the Auphonic website as an intro and an outro, and then when you apply that production to your recording they'll just be attached. So you don't have to even learn any editing to do it. Then, your next step is gonna be record your first episode. We'll talk more about how to do that, how to come up with content, the format you're gonna do, but you just gotta start doing it. It takes a while to get comfortable. Somebody just told me that they went back and listened to my early podcasts and they were like, your voice has changed so much. I don't know if I've just gone through puberty or what, but apparently your voice, and your confidence, and your comfort level changes the longer you do it. But you gotta start. If you don't start you're not gonna make that progress. Then you're gonna set up your host. Once you set it up once, this is what's really great, you never have to do it again. I set it up, I put in my details, I never really go back and do it. And then you can submit to iTunes. This is how people get their podcast. iTunes actually feeds a lot of other podcast apps. So if you have an iPhone, then you have the podcast app automatically that comes on it. If you have an Android phone, there are some other podcast apps you can get, there's so many in the app store, no matter what you're using, almost all of them are pulling from iTunes. So getting your podcast on iTunes actually sends it to all those other apps. Because what you want is for people to be able to open the app they already use, search for you, and find you. But to do that, you gotta submit it to iTunes. And the last step, is you tell everybody. So today we're gonna talk about how you can make sure that everybody who's interested in your show is gonna learn about it, and is going to be super into it, and know that it's there, and listen to it. Because the more people who listen in your first couple weeks, the better your show actually does on iTunes. So iTunes will recommend, other listeners liked. Getting people to listen to your show and review it makes your show more likely to show up in that. So we'll be sure to talk about how to get that recommended so that you get brand new people who are gonna be interested in your show. We have a question here from Dawn who's gotten in touch online, asking where can we get music for the outro and the intro? Because you have to be careful with copyright issues and all that kind of stuff. Yes, we're gonna talk about this a little bit later. But the short answer is, you can literally search for pod-safe music. That's music that the copyright is set so that you can use it. There are sites that host huge libraries of it. I'm gonna talk, I think in the resource guide I actually linked to a great, it's actually a blog post that lists tons of those directories. So, what artists do, or just people messing around at home on Garage Band do, is they list the music that is safe for you to use. They're whole songs, they're little clips. My husband made mine while messing around in Garage Band, but obviously everybody doesn't have access to him. So there are whole directories of music you can use. You have to make sure that the music says clearly that you can use it on your podcast. Otherwise you might be sued by the artist.

I design embroidery patterns and I love podcasts but I wasn't sure what I would talk about in my own podcast without being able to show pictures. After watching this course I already have 20+ ideas for podcast topics, plus I now know how to get a podcast up and running, step-by-step, AND how it fits with my business goals. Tara Swiger is an excellent teacher and coach. I filled page after page with notes!
