How to Write your Intro
The main thing is you need to focus on, and this is on page 10 of your workbook, what is your show about? Who is it for? And how does it serve them? People don't wanna hear about you, right? When you introduced me this morning, right, I'm a maker, I'm an author, I'm a podcaster, that's not why they're listening. They're listening cause what are they gonna get out of it. So you immediately tell them what they're gonna get out of it and you can also say, a second, who you are, like your name. If you have something really, something like, Hi, I'm Lizzie and I'm mom of four kids and I run a business from my home, we're gonna be talking about, and then a sentence of how you're gonna serve them. So that whole, you're a mom of four kids, is like an authority builder so you can include that. And then you wanna boil it down to just one or two short sentences. So, the people in the chatroom that are working on their intros, do they have any questions? Yeah, Annie was asking, is time precious w...
ith a podcast? Should a music intro be kind of, as long as you want or should it be shortened down, or is there a sweet spot for time for music intros? Yeah, so I'm sure that there's some studies that show the exact length of time it should be. I have evolved over the years, so if you hear my first episodes it goes on way too long. I've made mine shorter and shorter with time, because you don't want people to get bored. You also want to give people enough that they get into it. Right? Like they're like, oh that's Abby's music, I know I'm listening to Abby's podcast. So, yeah. I think it's something as well perhaps as listening to other podcasts, if you find what you feel you can tolerate, then maybe your listener might be able to tolerate it. Exactly. Also it's gonna depend on if you pick a song, that has a break or does something interesting, you might wanna get to that interesting part before you fade it out but you also might wanna shorten the front of it. So what we've done is, Jamie does the song for my podcast, and it's like fun and upbeat and cheerful, and we shortened it a lot to get it to just, so you still get the vibe, cause if you do just two seconds of music, you're like what did I just hear? So it has to be long enough that you really hear it, and yeah, the best advice is go listen to what you like and make sure yours isn't longer than what you actually like to listen to. And does it fade in and out? Like the music, do you have it fade into you speaking? So you can do that, if you're gonna edit the podcast in an editor and like Abby's was the music and then she said, welcome to episode 175. I have mine a discreet unit so that Auphonic just attaches it. So it doesn't fade like that, cause we would have to do that special audio editing each time but we don't do that. But if you wanna do that Auphonic thing where it just attaches intro and outro, then you can't, you can make it dial down but your voice won't come in over top of it, right? So it's up to you in the level of editing you wanna do. That makes it sound like an extra skosh professional I think, but I just have to take the time. So because our goal here is to just do it, right? And to improve over time. IF you guys go back and listen, there's a totally different song at the beginning of my earlier podcasts and it's just, everything has changed. And I know that people will go back and hear those old ones and it's like embarrassing almost? But it also, it builds that trust, it builds that authority. If I took them all down, I'm not gonna have the same kind of legacy on mine that I've been building. Same thing with old blog posts and old pictures I took.

I design embroidery patterns and I love podcasts but I wasn't sure what I would talk about in my own podcast without being able to show pictures. After watching this course I already have 20+ ideas for podcast topics, plus I now know how to get a podcast up and running, step-by-step, AND how it fits with my business goals. Tara Swiger is an excellent teacher and coach. I filled page after page with notes!
