Let's get into blending modes just a little earlier here today so that's opened up that calm okay, now I've got a piece of video footage here uh just it's my back background um you may see this type of stuff a little bit it's I shot this with a gopro in one of those quad copters um it's not called a drone is a quadcopter it doesn't kill people so it's kind of fun though teo to play with some of the footage from that and when we've got blending modes, they work almost identical that to what they do in photo shop if you're familiar photoshopping the blending modes there you'll be able to see that the same things could be applied to any type of layer here, whether it's text or if its object or if it's another layer video layer, whatever we do have the options of playing with the blending modes so same thing is applying the layer styles uh can come down to the blending mode either from the menu we could choose something like overlay and that's kind of a cool effect if we're toe animate tha...

t in from the side or whatever you get some text coming over overlays kind of cool or we can also right click on the layer itself just like we did with the layer styles we could go to our blending modes there and choose one of these others as well you can kind of play with all of those and again those can also be yeah enemy we can't jump from one to another but we can definitely play with them so let's see if there's a color burned and work it's not what us looking for landing mode let's go backto screen here so um the uh blending mode itself go back to here and I'm jumping ahead of myself a little bit here so sorry about that I may go back teo adding a laywer style to this in that way I can play with that sum so it's just paddle drop shadow on our tax this is something that you do a lot for and are blending options here we go the blending options are where we can adjust some of our light angles and light altitudes um also they're a blend advanced options we've got opacity we can play with some of the rgb channels as well on dh then of course we've got our actual blending blending mode is based into whatever the uh laywer style is in this case drop shadow it's multiply. Of course we can play with the different kinds of things if we do a burn um or just darken darkened is sometimes nice if you've got something that has a lot of dark areas behind it, it doesn't just make it extra black it will only darken the pixels that you're going over and that's good if you have something like a logo or a lot of tax that might be a little busier text it's good to go to a darkened blending mode instead of always multiply so in this case we could create our drop shot a little more there bring that out and then if we want to animate that in we can end this case we can change our whole blending mode of the let's go back to overlay and notice when I do that the drop shadow stays so I've got I've got a lot more option's there to make that text look a little better so we're going to get into animating text more in the next session as well. So um let me go back into some animation um let me go back to, um our ball bounce here for a second don't save okay um in this one here we've got I'm going to do a combination using our ball bounce that we did the original one and what we did with the, uh scale and with the laywer style itself so I'm going to combine both of those so in this case I'm going to come down to my composition settings and change that toe white okay, so now when I've got my position hit p for position I see it comes down here it's in this case I want it to look like it's bouncing out at us a little more so our it's bouncing away from us, it starts out and then it uh scales down so we're going to go toe our scale here let's go to pee and I click these little arrows here on either side of our key frame. There we go and then I hit s for scale and I want to set that as the key frame for that uh, position that scale so I'm going to come back out to my original here I'm going to scale it up whips I'm not cartooning this one, so I wanted to be up a bit there we go and then we're going to come back out here to the end, copy that key frame and paste it to go so now it's going to look a little more like it looks like it's kind of going at a curve that's because I don't have any e's in or he's out on these going to parent he's out and then he's in on this one, okay, so now the ball's looking a little more like it's going to be balancing against the surface there, so we're going to add a layer style to it, we're going to fake that a little bit more ok, so using our layer style on dh here we go fast mouse so drop shadow and then here I'm going to animate my drop shadow and at this point I wanted to be down below it and not too fuzzy but a bit okay, so that's that points of my distance size is could be a little crisper and then, of course, my opacity has to change over time. So now I've just said the key frames for its down position. Now when it's up to this point I want to definitely move my distance way down here I want to adjust my size up, but in this case I want to adjust the spread so I'm going to come back to this key frame here, select that stopwatch because I want that to be there and in this case, I want to pull the spread down well, because it won't go negative, will it? Okay, but I do want to bring my opacity way down there we go, okay? So now as it bounces closer, it will get there, I still want to bring it down my distance down even more. There we go so I can copy those key frames come back out here and then those all have to be eased in and eased out as well we have to always make sure that we've got everything that hasn't ease has tio haven't these matching corresponding key frame the problem is if you don't it's going to move separately so say if I've got a scale that isn't easy but I've got position that it's moving you're going to get things that look wobbly were distorted the same thing with our drop shadows too so I select all those key frames easy ese out for those key frames and then here seaward my capacity didn't get copied over here her copy and then over here paste there we go select all this key frames right click and eazy e's in so now a little bit of a wobble still in there I think I've got something key frame maybe off yeah there we go these have to be over just one more so that shows you one frame can throw your key frame off so that, um that's kind of a pseudo assimilation of three d I do this kind of stuff a lot because it's a lot easier than building three d camera getting the lighting just right making sure that my objects air moving in three d space so it's a it's a good cheat it's a really good cheat way actually have a quick question about um blending the blending modes so if there are several layers does the blending mode affect all of them? Um that's a good question typically it does because things are stacked just like they are in photo shop so if you do have uh if you have several things underneath then it's going to affect everything underneath so if you've got a text on top of text on top of text on top of a background with some graphics coming in then yes they definitely will affect you know be multiplied through the whole thing definitely okay great. So thomas and austin asks how how do we design a custom ease rather than just using the presets? I don't know that there is a custom ease capability you have to use a preset and modify it so there's there's not a way that I'm aware of other than using something a little more advanced with expressions and that's going to be a little more advanced than what we get into in this workshop great because in expressions any more questions I think this was somewhat of a follow up with moons that flies asked that photo shop now supports video editing adobe premiere has been part of the sweet for years and after effects to with all of these options he wants to know how do I know which program to go teo and and what are the differences? You know what? Well if you think of aftereffects kind of is an extension of photo shop and ah I kind of like to think of it is kind of photo shop on steroids it doesn't have exact exactly the same tools but you are manipulating layer content you have to have some place to develop content you don't really develop a lot of content in after effects the content that you'll create in after effects will be solid layers with filters applied it'll be text it'll be masked solids things like that will be getting into three d vectors and all of that in the next couple days but again, you need something to move it's a place to move stuff and it is an animation tools it's emotion, graphics tools and animation tool and uh I mean that's that's the beauty of it but it's also it does require you to create content I use photoshopped to create my content a lot if I've got still images, graphics, lee's illustrator the same way where I've got illustrator graphics and I'll be able to animate those we're going to get into a little bit of that I think maybe that's tomorrow, but we might get into some of it today dealing with vectors vector shapes but there's ways of converting things text and vector images, logos things like that you'll be able to animate the vector shape itself. I think most of that we're going to get into tomorrow um now premier obviously is a video editor and they really are blurring a lot of the lines between the applications now yes, you can do some video editing and photoshopped being that creative cloud opens up all of these aps to people now, you're not just buying photo shop in a box, you know, you're buying access to all the tools and that's why we're doing these workshops is to make these tools more accessible to people and help them bridge that gap. You know, this is a this is they were bridge building with this siri's, and I continue next week during creative, creative cloud week. I'm going to be getting into a one day workshop with after effects and premier, and how we bridge those two together and how how they're used together and that kind of a workflow, but I typically I said earlier, I rarely ever just open one app or just use one app to do everything almost always have photoshopped and after effects open, and a lot of times in five premiere open, I'm using all three of them, so they have their own strong points. There is a little overlap between the tools and that sometimes we get a little confused who is like, you know which command which apple, my inn, and which commanded by looking for so somebody actually asked just on the aftereffects versus the photo shot, does the aftereffect, cs six or cc support smart objects from photo shop smart objects? I don't recall that being transferrable you would have to either render it. If it's. If it's, an animation, smart object or video smart object in photo shop, he would have to render it with the alfa channel. Before I say that, I'm not sure if you do alfa channels that a photo shop. Yet I haven't tried that that's. Another thing that I'm going to have to check into. But I think you do have to render those type of things first, or if it is a smart object layer, then you would have to duplicate it. In photoshopped, duplicate the layer, rast, arise a collapse, it merge into itself, and then bring that merge layer. But if you have layer styles, you can leave the layer styles on that layer. Those will come in, and you're the option of either merging the layer styles to the layer or editing them across time, like we've been showing here.

Jeff Foster seems like a great, knowledgeable guy. But this course is so disappointing. The classes are disorganized, convoluted yet shallow, and waste an awful lot of time. And they’re just lectures — you’re just watching him do stuff — no lessons where you can work along with him to really absorb what’s going on. My biggest complaints are 1) It seems like he didn’t prepare very much, so we end up watching him go through features one by one, sometimes just to try to find the thing that’s going to illustrate the point he’s trying to make; and 2) he’s unnecessarily confusing. Here’s an easy example. In the “parenting” class, which hinges on one layer’s relationship to another, he created identical layers and named them identically. So he’s explaining that “blue solid” is the parent to “blue solid.” And then he proceeds to discuss the layers, which are numbered #1, #2, #3, by calling them “the first layer” (#3), “the second layer” (#2), and “the third layer” (#1.) After Effects is complicated enough! Maybe I’m spoiled by having learned Illustrator with a wonderful Creative Live course. This is not that.
