Importing Images into Lightroom CC
Okay, so let's import something, shall we? All right, so I have imported the way I showed you this morning. I have taken a file from a camera set of files from a camera and I have put them into a folder called jackson baseball portrait and there it is the raw images and they're all buried down deep inside of here. Now I shot raw plus j peg, you can see that there's a raw image and a j peg alone there we go is a raw and a j peg they're the same names forty eight forty eight the reason I shot raw plus j pegs because I'm going to use that to show you how to calibrate your camera later, but I I just need you to know something first and that is that when you're in light room, you need to go into the preferences before you import something that has raw plus j pegs and you need to make sure that this check box right here tree j peg files next to ross as separate photos that needs to be clicked. Otherwise it will like tie them together and you'll not you can't separate him, they're just and th...
en if you delete the j peg, then it will freak out because it doesn't have both so anyway just make sure that that separate I don't even know why that's available, but okay, please check that box and never run. Check it. Okay, so once we create a wave done that preference, then we can go into the import dialog box, which is right down here on the left hand side. Click on import and now I'm going to search for inside of my working dr, I'm going to go down to that folder and click on it, and then you can see the images that air coming in. So this is I'm gonna bring in the raws and the j pegs so you can see both of them and over on the left hand side, there are options. First off, what preview shall I build? Minimal allows them to come in just like that superfast and by the way, another one of the features in light room c c is that it is a lot faster, super super fast. And so if I do a minimal preview, if I want to see these images really fast, it comes in rocket fast, so if I need to see the images quickly, click on minimal import and they'll just go and you'll see him very quickly. If I can wait, I'll click on one for one previews because the one for one previews remember if I want to take this on the road with me if I want to take this hard drive on the road and I want to be able to look at my photos and work on my photos without the photos president because they're over at home in the in the photos dr I need tohave the one for one previews so I can zoom in and see if it's sharp so that's what that is one for one previous allows me to zoom in and zoom out if you zoom into a photo and it has to build some kind of a preview, then you didn't build these in your wasting time, so we're going to do the minimal sze right now just so that you can see how quickly it comes in because it's pretty impressive um and then build the smart previews if I click on build smart previews it's also making a very tiny raw image to go inside the catalog right here inside of this drive so this drive will now have a jpeg full size. It will have the catalog and it will have a small raw image of this catalog that's big enough that it could print of five by seven pretty decently but it can blogged perfectly so that's what I want inside of this drive and that's why I need to click this it doesn't do it while it's importing imports the photos, then it starts building these previews all right, so, um, I can add that the other thing that I want to do on import, oh, and here's another new thing in light room as well. You can add it to a catalogue, so if I add this to a catalogue, I mean, to a collection, I add it to a collection I could come down tear to the mobile collection or the working collection, and I can say, I want to add this to lets say, I want to add it to the working collection here and so mobile collection here now, let's do working collection I could plus, when I do that it's going to ask me what kind of collection I want to create, and I'm just going to call it jackson, and then I'm going to tell it to put it inside of my working collection, and I'm going to tell it to set it to sync with light room mobile. So I click on that to sync with light room mobile, and I hit create it makes a new collection remember those of those virtual things, but now that virtual collection is also toggled to sync with light ra mobile, so if for some reason I had to leave, so I want to import these, and then I got to get out of here because lunch is very soon I can do this and hit go at the studio and it'll start up loading delight ra mobile all I have to do is take this with me and then when I'm somewhere train ride, whatever I've got them and I can flip through them and I can toggle them and star them and flag them and adjust them on my mobile device even on my phone and while I'm doing that it's flagging him back home so now those flags and stars air coming back home, so when I get home all the work, son, I just come in here, check it because this screen is not perfect, you know? You're gonna look at it, go well, that looks great and get back to me like I was a little off, you know? But but the bulk of your work has done you come here and then you can just confirm it and finish it now is it faster to work on a tablet than it is to work on a computer? No, absolutely not, but if you're a baseball game or you're a friend's party that's really boring or if you're whatever and you're trying to escape, this is a really great way to get something done in a place that you have nothing else to do plane flights, whatever alright, ok, so I can simply come down here now at the very end I've got two key word and so in this case I'm going to say jackson and I'm going to say baseball and I'm going to say child boy mail and portrait and studio okay, so those are the things oh, you know what else I could put in here is I could say chandler and error is ona because that's where they were shot so those are the types of things that I would put in because it's common to all of them now I wouldn't put baseball bat or a hat or glove or ball and because all of them don't have all of those things in them on lee put the things that are common to all of the images in there also there's a metadata area here that you can choose different copyright standards on, so I'm gonna choose my two thousand fifteen standard they don't it doesn't come with these you have to make them so you're gonna click on new down at the bottom of this menu and when you do that it's going to give you the option to create a meta data set and there's a lot of stuff you can put in it, but the most basic stuff you need to put in it is your copyright information, which is right down here so the copyright information you put in there than it will tag them all with that copyright information so I'm just going to choose two thousand fifteen copyright so that my copyright is put on every photo that comes in all right once I've done all of that I could come down to the bottom here and this is really important for people who use light room two in just photos if you're the type that has one card and you're stuck on the idea of putting a card in and having light remove it over and do all that stuff for you remember as long as you know what light rooms doing with it that's fine, but sometimes they go in different places and sometimes you know and so what you want to do is you want to come down to the bottom and this is even good for people who do it my way but click on this little preset area here these air called import pretty sets if you click on that you can create a preset or you can use presets that you've already created. So whatever you've done all of these areas around here if you click on one of these presets it will change all of that to the specific spot and the specific things and the keywords everything that you've entered into this panel can be saved as a pre set so that you never after entered it again that way if you're always doing the same thing whenever you shoot you know candle photos you put them in a specific place and you do a specific thing and you tag on the specific way and whatever just make a preset this is candle photos and then you click on it and then there's their candle photos and they're going to go hear these air travel photos they're going to go here so if you're going to use light room teo ingest stuff that's a really good policies make sure that you have all of those key where are those pre set set all right so I'm gonna hit import now we're importing watch how fast it comes in like it literally is like we're they're all alike and start looking at him now so they lighter in five and before people always complain you know like room still slow so I'm going to use you know I'm going to use a photo mechanic or I'm gonna use this or bridge or whatever in order to look at stuff once you have light room six or c c that's no longer a valid option because it's extraordinarily fast yes jered I thought you applied those keywords to every photo but those photos don't have the boy in the in the pictures once so it it it puts the keywords on every photo that comes in yeah the only reason I have this photo is because my son hadn't come to the studio yet and so I was getting lighting right? Okay, so these I can remove the key words from them if I'm going to keep them, but chances are I'm not going to keep them at all on dh, so I didn't worry about it, but if I was shooting a wedding and there was, like, say, some pictures of my kids before the wedding that I took, I would still keyword the whole wedding, and then I would go in and remove it from the twenty at the top, so you would just you would take you're thumbnails and you would highlight if I was like, that is an amazing artistic bush that I just photographed, then I would go into the keywords and highlight all those and say, well, it was in a studio, but that's, the only thing, and I just go like that. So then I would say, studio bush chair there, you know, and then that that would be that so now they're completely separated, and you can do that. Keywords is great because you can highlight a block of text, our block of images and keyword, those and then block of images and keyword those so that's it's really simple to do but that's it that's it that's importing that's how easy importing is, and if you're shooting, you know, multiple far full there's multiple cards you just instead of ingesting one at a time you ingest all of them at the same time and it brings in you know five or ten cards at the same time as opposed to one out of time and that's why we do it the way I have suggested um all right any questions up to now about anything regarding importing or uh the library itself I have some questions from I'm going to do heather wants to know do you recommend building smart previous every time yes I did okay I do because of this because of this dude right here I build my smart as long as I have time to build the smart previous and it's building them right now you can see the progress bar well I'm gonna zoom in here and you occasionally are our switches back there you guys khun go between me and the progress bar back and forth and you'll be able to see how quickly this is moving but I'm building those smart previews because I want them here so that when I walk away and go somewhere else I khun I can utilize those keep in mind also that it's going into that little collection as well that is currently sinking here so as we speak these air actually getting uh we're going to see them come up here so if I click on light room mobile we could go to our overhead cam and I'm there's jackson's photos right there you can see that the collection's been made um would you guys like to see this on your screen so I'm gonna click on here we're gonna light light up that screen see if you guys can can you guys pull up that screen on the tv for the there we go you can see that I've got jackson's photos here um and there's nothing in him right now because it's still making him but it's uploaded them to the web and then it's going to start bringing them down into this collection that I made while I was importing it. So then once those come on, then I'll have access to him and so will check in on those a little bit later. But for now um just know that they're on their way there, okay? And the progress bar's almost done there, so we're pretty close to being done um so I build them b I build smart previews because I want to go on the road with catalog and not need access to the photos if you're always working in the same spot in the photos were always attached no need to make him accept if you work with a nikon d eight hundred or d ten or if you work with the new cannon five d uh s mark three because those are huge raw files if you take a huge raw file like that and you run it through light room it's going to be slower than a normal file unless you build the smart previews and unplug the files if you even if you're at home with the files, build the smart previews once you're done building him unplugged the drive now you're working on little raws and you khun zip through and it won't slow your computer down at all and then as soon as you're ready to export him, plug him back in and then you have access to the fifty megapixel file that cannon is going to give you, alright, so that is fast operation with huge files, you just unplug the files, but you have to have smart previous to do that. All right? Any other questions out there? I think we're good uh here's one question just came in cannes smart previous be created for images that have been previously imported absolutely and regular previews too. So if I go up to the top menu in the library area, go down to the previews area, you see that I have lots of options I can build standard size previews and remember we said our standards to auto, so that would build it for my laptop, and if I was on my desktop it build it bigger for the desktop um and then also you can build them for one for one's that's so that I can zoom in and zoom out see if things are sharp I can discard those previews aiken build smart previous or discard smart previous so that's if if you forget to do it or if you want to do it to a selected number of them, you can always do that later. So any questions do we have any questions about anything? Can you talk to the space requirements of you know, a smart free view versus a one to one versus the standard versus okay, yeah in fact I can show you let's let's do this I'll do one better let me show you the difference oh, and by the way, our preview our images are coming in on to our ipad from jackson so if you flip to that for a second, you can see that they're starting to come in now, so I'll be able to go the ballgame pretty soon and you can by the way you can there's a there's a sec uh both in the iphone and in the ipad and it's also available on other devices as well. If you go to the preferences you khun tell it on ly to sink while on wifi that way you don't, you know end of using all your data on photos but if you need to synchronize those photos while you're out and about then you can turn that off and it'll sink through your data connection um and I'll show you that in a little bit as to how I use that on the road for location scouting very important location scouting to me is one of the most important things I d'oh so I even location scout in the air while I'm traveling because I'm covering a lot of ground when I travel and so I found a really cool location that I want to go shoot at while I was flying over nevada on the way here and so I took a picture and then don't tell the ff the faa, but I turned my phone on and waited for the connection I can't get a cell connection thirty thousand feet, but I can get gps really easily and so then I take a picture and then I take whatever photos on my phone armed with a camera if I want, but the picture tells me where I am and then I could just simply go backto light room it'll show me exactly where that location is find the road and I could go there so location scouting in the air so that's right? I'm a human drone, okay? We were we were going to our white working catalog let me show you here inside of this catalog michelle you the price tag of each of these so here is the catalog there we go this is one point five gigabytes for the catalogue of the working catalog I currently have and that's a pretty good representation of how big my actual working catalog is usually about a gig and a half of data for those photos um then if I go to the previews so this one is the smart previews and it's four hundred and ninety nine megabytes that's a pretty small file for a lot of smart previews and then watch what happens when I go to these air the j peg previews twelve gigabytes okay so think about the difference between twelve gigabytes of j pegs and less than to get half a gigabyte of raws which are far more useful than those j peg the only purpose of the j pegs to zoom in see if it's sharp zoom back out that's it once you've accomplished that goal the j pegs are no longer useful and you khun discard them and get rid of all that weight because that that's a big weight on your catalogue so you can get rid of that and just start working and by the way if you start adjusting an image it's going to throw that away is going to throw away your your regular preview anyway because every time you would just something has to throw away the preview and build a new one and it does that every time you adjust it builds a new previous builds a new previa so don't ever adjust your image is before you have gone in and checked the sharpness of them so you select first then you adjust that's that's the size issues right there so a raw a small raw um smart preview is very small the tiny little thing in fact it's so tiny that I used to when I sent my images off to shoot dot at it you used to have to send all of the raw information to them and plus the catalog but now smart previous was instituted in light five and since light room five you could just send them the catalog with the smart previews and the difference between up loads used to take like what what would have taken eight, eight hours thirteen hours of upload takes twenty five or thirty minutes that's the difference between those so it's huge very big change so don't be afraid of building those smart previews in fact fear building wanna want one for one's more than smart, creative smart people previews even though they're really powerful are very small if you shot both jpeg and raw but only want to import raw cannot be done how would you do that now? Yeah well you could do that, but you'd have to go in an un check all of the j pegs which to be really annoying so it's better just to do what I did which is I imported both you can see that I've got raw and j peg right next to each other so there's the cr two there's the j peg and they look a little differently do you see that they look a little differently this one the j peg let me zoom out here and the j peg is really contrast e in comparison to the raw see how the raw has much more information okay that's the difference between the j peg in the raw that's why we shoot raw because j pegs looked like this rahs looked like that and so we have a lot more information to deal with inside of the raw than we do in the j peg um but we need to talk and we will talk about this right when we get back we'll talk about the concept of how do we get these two things to match we want our raws toe look like what we're seeing on the back of our screen so how do you get that tow happen? We'll talk about that when we return a cz wella selecting the images but for now the important thing is bring both the j pegs and the raws in and then if you want to get rid of the j pegs simply go up to the metadata and search say I want all filed types j pegs highlight all those delete it's much faster to do it that way than it is to un check every other file of, you know, five hundred files or whatever.

I've been using Lightroom for about a year now. I'm pretty comfortable with the basics and a little more. Sometimes knowing what I want to learn next depends on knowing what's out there to be learned. I listened in to this course from work to get an idea of whether there was enough new content to warrant buying the course. Though Jared covers lots that I know, he filled many small things I didn't know and covered some bigger topics that were new to me. I decided that I wanted to own this course because I respond best to structured learning, and Jared starts at point A and carries through to point Z, so to speak. I have watched his live and rebroadcast courses before and I really like and learn from his teaching style too, so I'm sure this course will be the boost I need as I prepare to subscribe to Lightroom CC instead of just using my local copy. Though another reviewer's tone wasn't very nice, I have to agree that it would helpful to have a written synopsis or outline of courses to help when deciding whether to purchase. Looking at the titles of the included videos is helpful, but not enough. This would be especially useful when a person hasn't seen the live broadcast first, and is simply evaluating a course in the course library.

I learned a lot from this class when I took it a long time ago. I'm not as fond of his ego but that's fine as I don't have to be around him all day long. What I found extremely useful was the video on synching Lightroom Presets. I set this Dropbox synching system on my laptop and desktop Mac computers and it works perfectly. I also use it for other programs as well like Photoshop and another program called Keyboard Maestro. Thanks for your help Jared. Much appreciated trick.
