Using Facial Recognition in Lightroom CC

But really what you should be looking for now because this is a new feature in light room see see we don't have to spray the people anymore because it will find the people for us so instead what we want to do is we want to start looking for non people things so I'm going to say okay lets look for flowers so now anywhere I see flowers happening I'm going to spray flowers so I just go like this on look for more flowers there's flowers there and I'm just clicking and dragging and so that's what's getting the key words are being sprayed on there just like if I was spraying you know, spray spray painting a wall or something like that so just like that everywhere I see flowers and what you do is you started top and you just spray can anything on the way down and then you start at the bottom and go up and you spray can like children and then you top down so like if I were doing travel stuff I would say started top and say buildings our building's common architecture that's what I would type i...

n and then I would spread and then I'd start at the bottom and say people and I would any time I saw people and then I would turn around and say if there's a moment something you know momentous moment that I got I would spray moments and then I and a lot of those like a moment is not all that common, and so what you'll do is you'll say, ok, I'm going to do moment right now so if I do a moment now, I'm just going it's not gonna be like spraying everywhere it's going to be that's the moment and that's a moment yeah, I know moments no moments that's a moment. Um, see that there's? Not a lot of moment, yes, but they're here's a moment there's a moment, there's a moment. You know, things that are interesting that I could then say, you know, if I want to do a block post, I could type moments in my in my portfolio and say, show me all the things that I thought were moments, and maybe I could tell a story today, click on one and send it out is a moment all right, so moments is good, I can do shoes because I've got shoes right here. And by the way, if for some reason you come across one image there's, no point in actually adding the keyword right here, like actually pulling this up, clicking it in and it's spring one word, so when that happens instead, if you click on if you click on the picture, see out spraying but if you click on the frame it's not spring it just selects the image and at that point if you've done that then it's just a matter of entering a keyword so command kay will take you to the key word and then you type in the keyword shoes and now that's done and then keep spring so then you just keep going around in spring and spring spring okay, so occasionally you have to learn all these tools and use them simultaneously so you use this tool and then this tool and then this tool but the spray the main entry point is importing the photos that's when you keyword first all the things that are common to all photos then once you've done that then you do section by section and use command k get into the keyword type in key words for that section so anything that's common to that section like for instance, this is a wedding it's at the royal palms s o if I'm doing ceremony I canoe ceremony common royal palms because it all happens in the same place and then hit enter so I do section by section once I'm done with the sections then I can go in and spray any kind of like flowers, buildings, blobel that kind of stuff now once I've done all of that I can also go into and this is the new feature inside of light room faces or people is this little sea that little people thing right there if I click on that people so I'm gonna put my spray can away and I'm gonna click on people when I do that shows me the people now last night I told it what james looks like and I told it what yulia it looks like so now I can so I told it this is this is julia and it put her here and this is james and it put him here if I double click julia it says, well, these all look like yulia so now I can say okay, yeah, those are all yulia except for these so I'm gonna highlight all of these, so I'm just gonna highlight them all like this and then I'm going to go in and I'm just going to say not not not say is there any others know everything else so now I just hit this little checkbox now all of those air confirmed julia's and then look it says o now that I've got more information I think I know more about what yulia looks like from different angles and so I can then again highlight all of them and then I can say not not not not not not not not they ought to add the spray can option in here so you can just click and drag but so I just kind of scan through and look for things that aren't actually there's probably more that aren't julia than our, um but it's so it's finding those so maybe we ought to just click on the ones that are but I just see I just hit that check box and then those go up there and so then I'm getting this list of you leah's and then I'm in the end, once I have all of yulia tagged than all of the ones that aren't are going to be him, so at that point then I can come back to the people. So you that little toggle takes you back to the people area, and now I can go up and click on james and there's, all of james, and it looks like it's it doesn't mistake james for yulia just sometimes thinks that uly is james. I don't know why it's got he's got a beard so so I can click on this one and I can look and see ok, those air all james it even finds him looked where he's hidden behind her and then I hit go and now all of those are sena's him, so now there are no more than it confined that look like james, so now I go back and I would find more of yulia and just keep going that direction and if you find someone else, I don't know who that person is or whatever. So if you find if you find something else, then you would just come in here and type it. So all of these look like julia and so see how it's starting to intelligently when we first came in here, it thought these were somebody from a different wedding. But now it knows that these air yulia so I click on that. And now those were in there that one's her. This one. It doesn't know who she is because it can only see part of her face. But as soon as I start typing your name, it's gonna have it and then got it. So I just keep just keep doing this until I finally have a set of images that are all her. Now, how does that help me? As I've been doing that it's been keyword ing her. So now when I go back to the grid and I look like, look at a picture of julia I khun, go to her photos and I can zoom in and there's julia's name. Now the interesting thing about you leah's name, though, is that if I go to the keyword list and I type in that key word, julia and I double click it so these you could do this to any key word, by the way, and this is one of the advantages there's a lot of people that wonder why what I use one catalog for everything rather than one catalog for each in the you know, like this job gets catalog, that job gets cattle in this job gets catalog because if you institute rules and things like key wording, structures and stuff like that in one catalog than all the images that come in get to use all those structures that you've created so you leah's name is now a person keyword if you have it toggled is a person keyword then from then on out if you were to export a photo and let's go to if I were to export a photo at the bottom where it says meta data, I can tell it oh I I'm not hold on haven't selected anything down here at the bottom worse is metadata I ca n't tell it that I want to send out let's say we're making j pegs I want to send out all the metadata, but I want to remove the people because I don't want their names broadcast all over so that way I get to search for the person but you can't on the internet that's important especially if you're putting kids and stuff like that and you remove that information now how is that helpful than for me to have their names, but not for the web to have those names, the helpfulness comes in the ability to find all of the things that have julia in them. So I'm going to search because now I know her name, I can simply go in and say, let's, check none, and then I'm going to go in the text field here, so this is right up to the top. I can choose tex and I can search any searchable field, or I could just search for key words that contain and I'm gonna type in julia groups there. Once I've got that, I could just highlight all of these images, so just highlight every image that had her tagged in it, and then I go back to my keyword ng and I type in bride now bride is not a person keyword it will go out to the internet, but julia stays internal that way. I'm not broadcasting the person but it's internally, I confined them and internally, if we weren't online here live, I would put in her full name. All right, but I only put in her first name, and I don't even know if it's a real name, okay, so I am going to then keyword bride every time I find her. Then when I go to him I'm gonna highlight him and type and groom now I'm not going to do everybody in a wedding that's crazy but what I am going to do is key players father of the bride mother of the bride bride groom may be the best man the maid of honor and maybe like the ring bear like people that seemed to be important I can I can scope those out figure out what's important if you're at a well let me tell you how this helps me once I have that and I khun keyword father of the bride mother of the bride bubble but then when someone goes online two smugmug smugmug takes those keywords and gives people the opportunity to click on their names or their positions and so then if the bride is in her wedding and she's looking at images she's like I just want to see all the pictures of me click on bride all the pictures of her show up click on groom all the pictures of him show up so makes sense super super good for sales um because a the person that that really helps is the mother who comes in is like my kid went to a wedding I know the photographer took picture of if she types and if she clicks on children she will see all the children just that's it just children so she'll be although that one so it's very easy for them to find stuff thea sports I think it could be very valuable because you could type in names and put him on a password protected side or whatever and then literally people could click on you know this person, that person, that person or you could even you could keyword um number forty two don't even put their name out there but number forty two because you have their face and that face is going to be the same all number forty twos they're gonna be that face and then just type in forty two so now number forty two comes up online and so people can find their kid in a long as the keyword is part of your tagging system online. So the more information and I think that the important thing to understand here is the mawr information that we can put into our files as we're working on them the better off we'll be, but you have to keep it efficient. You couldn't possibly do this and tag every person without the facial recognition back when it was spraying keywords all I did was keyword flowers, details, architectural shots, land escape shots, things like that and then I tagged the bride, the groom and children that's all I did but now with the institution of facial recognition I can actually go in and tag key players very easily and the process of finding the bride is very quick so I can do that and I can do it across the entire event rather than just my favorites I confined the bride and the groom so they could find themselves so it's a very valuable tool that they've institute and I think it will only get better and faster greater but I think they've done a great job with it so play around with it and feel it out but that's the way I use it and I think it's the right way to use it um now back to inputting information if we can input enough information about these images keywords star ratings flags faces you will be able to find anything you need at the drop of a hat or at least get you very very close like sometimes you might get close enough that you're like I know I shot this cool shot of you know, a guy on the coast you know, on the mediterranean had some kind of a handbag with like I know something was in there so you would type in ocean mediterranean you know, france uh man mail something like that and all of that would come up and you'd find him pretty quickly even if you didn't type in handbag you know? So it's I I always put the code humor in there too so there's something funny or if there's a serious moment moments or humor are both tags that go in because it's easy to find those and humor is a great thing to have at your disposal so always great um you got a question yeah, I shoot a lot of motor sports motorcycles specific clea has anybody experimented to see if it'll do recognize by helmet because they are unique that would save me and amazingly I don't know what it's looking for actually I think it's looking for like structure of the face like nose eyes whatever I don't know maybe the shape of the opening to the helmet with the eyes and whatever maybe I don't know play with it report back let me know I'd be interested to know that's right helmet recognition well, I had one one person sent me an email and said and I they're probably watching they they do a lot of sports like race cars and you know, bike rides and stuff like that out in the middle of you know, these long I know big races and uh he was asking is there any way to do like number recognition like text so that you could find like number seventeen's car you know and like find all that so currently not a way to do it but certainly an interesting concept so a number recognition be easier letter recognition that easier than facial recognition because you know what the characters are of course then you'd have to have all the languages on the world you know? So you have to be like doing swahili and you know, chinese and yeah, we'll start with faces there's probably less faces than there are characters toe anyway so um so once we put this information and we'll be able to find it and later on we're going to talk about some of the ways that we can utilize that information that we've put in to get our photos back out um quickly and efficiently like for instance when we go to blogged you will be amazed at how quickly we blawg because most of the information about the blog's already going to be in the photos all right yeah you organized the keywords themselves I don't I have no interest in getting into my keyword list and organizing it but there are people who do there are people who get in and like they're really persnickety and because you can create a keyword and then create sub key words that if you use the parent keyword it will automatically apply you know the other keywords or if you use the child keyword it has to apply the parent keyword because it's inside this you know so there are people go to that extent on dh those people are generally the type of people that are selling stock imagery online which is really good and the facial recognition is going to help those people who want to shout sell stock imagery because they will literally be able to go through their entire portfolio catalog and say this person's name is, you know, whatever say say you're you photograph stars or whatever on the red carpet you could literally save this is so and so and then it would go on find all the people that looked like that and then maybe, you know, you'd get, you know, all the different stars lined up and then you could sell him based on that, so I think it's a useful, useful tool um, but keyword, keyword keyword absolutely essential to the process of being able to find a can't stress the process of key wording enough, okay, so during this segment we've talked about, we've already talked about organizing your image is selecting your images, we talked about changing the the time stamp on your images we talked about flagging and starring we've talked about renaming those images that they stay in and order on we talked about key wording us so that all of that is the selection process so that you have all of the information about these images, they don't have to be adjusted yet that's our next goal is to work on adjusting him, but really we just want to see what do we have what's available to us. What kind of information could we put in about those so that we can find them later? All right, um michael has a question. The keywords in light room do they directly reflect the keywords in seo and uploading an image online? That question is good. We're going to actually be talking to an asio specialist on thursday. Okay on day three how we want to say that so in the final segment of this course, we will be talking to an asio specialist on dh so we get to talk to him about those issues. But depending on the system you're using, the key words will come into play. It depends. So they are inside the j peg that you send. It is very possible that google's looking in there, I don't know what they're doing, no one knows what google's doing, but they are there and they are findable, they're findable by my systems so they should be findable by google system as well. But what does happen is if you have the right systems in place, those systems will take the key words out and utilize them for his purposes and that's. What we want is we want to find systems that we can send our images to like for instance, my smugmug system allows my client's toe look at the key words and find people based on those keywords in a keyword tag cloud is what they call it on dso that's one system smugmug is the example of one system it's really utilizing those keywords another example is wordpress wordpress can utilize those systems if you have the right plug ins and we're in the ceo specialist we're going to talk to is actually part of a company called next gen for next generation I believe that's what it's for but anyone next gen creates plug ins forward press that utilize all of the information you're putting into in tow light room and they're going to literally make it possible for you to post things using all of that and so we'll talk to them on the final segment of our workshop so that'll be a really good thing to tune into some for sure yeah um how do you rate your personal images when they're all very dissimilar? Do you go through each image aerating each individual photo or do you have a better method? It's a good good question how do you rate something that is different than the next thing over here andrea lee you have to rate things based on how good they are for what they are, so when I see an image and I respond to it, the pick means that someone gets to see it but the stars that's the stars is where you start to decide you know how my classifying these images and I do it based on my reaction to the image? So if I look at an image that is a portrait, I'm reacting it two it based on it being a portrait lit, posed, etcetera. When I'm looking at a documentary picture of people on the street, I'm looking at that based on what it is, I recognize that it is not a litte posed portrait, but I'm looking at it for a story and I'm seeing this story that's evolving if I'm looking at a landscape, I'm not looking at it in comparison to the documentary, I'm looking at it in comparison to landscapes, is this a great landscape? Is it something that when I want to call oppa landscape? Am I going to be impressed with this one? And so that's the way I'm starring based on what it is, and you have to do that? You just have to say, I'm looking at a landscape so therefore putting on my landscape hat and deciding whether it's a good landscape or a bad landscape and that's where the stars start coming in so you just have to pay attention to what it iss and raid it based on that.

I've been using Lightroom for about a year now. I'm pretty comfortable with the basics and a little more. Sometimes knowing what I want to learn next depends on knowing what's out there to be learned. I listened in to this course from work to get an idea of whether there was enough new content to warrant buying the course. Though Jared covers lots that I know, he filled many small things I didn't know and covered some bigger topics that were new to me. I decided that I wanted to own this course because I respond best to structured learning, and Jared starts at point A and carries through to point Z, so to speak. I have watched his live and rebroadcast courses before and I really like and learn from his teaching style too, so I'm sure this course will be the boost I need as I prepare to subscribe to Lightroom CC instead of just using my local copy. Though another reviewer's tone wasn't very nice, I have to agree that it would helpful to have a written synopsis or outline of courses to help when deciding whether to purchase. Looking at the titles of the included videos is helpful, but not enough. This would be especially useful when a person hasn't seen the live broadcast first, and is simply evaluating a course in the course library.

I learned a lot from this class when I took it a long time ago. I'm not as fond of his ego but that's fine as I don't have to be around him all day long. What I found extremely useful was the video on synching Lightroom Presets. I set this Dropbox synching system on my laptop and desktop Mac computers and it works perfectly. I also use it for other programs as well like Photoshop and another program called Keyboard Maestro. Thanks for your help Jared. Much appreciated trick.

I am new to Lightroom and from the start of the course it became very clear to me that Jared is one quality person with a real passion to explain everything with great skill and a motivation for success. I did not hesitate to download his course as this is the basis for my personal development and the journey to experience great photography.
