Using Lightroom Mobile

So let's talk I just noticed that light room mobile over here is about to die because I've been apparently running this thing all day without charging it. So let's go here to light room mobile just so that we can do this before for it dies. I want you to see light room mobile in action on dh so what I'm going to do is I'm going to jackson's photos are still there. Um, but if I click on this and I go into jackson's photos, you can see that he's that they're coming in so let's, just click on one and let's see if this's there we go. Okay, so we only have five percent battery life left, but we're going to get through this, so if we're looking at light or mobile here and we swiped through, you can see that some of these were changed, others were not we need to go back out and go a little further down before we start sit there, there's one that was changed so you can see that it's got the adjustments from what we've done already on it applied on dso and it's also got a flag over here, so I c...

an also change this and say, I want to do stars, and so now I can say I want it to be a three star image and so now this image is going to be a three star image, and so as we go through the images, they will just kind of go over to the other they'll go over two light room, but that the the I think I really wanted to show you about light room actually has very little to do with, um, the ipad, even though the ipad can then see whatever I'm sorting our whatever I'm getting so you can see that they're eighteen iphone. You see these scouting photos right here? Those weren't taken on my ipad, they were actually taken on my phone, so once I take a picture on my phone, so I'm gonna unplug this and I'm gonna grab my phone, plug my phone in and I'm going to go to light room. There we go. And so I have a folder called scouting. All right? So scouting photos can be taken from my camera and let me show you what happens so there's a little there's a little point at the bottom right hand corner of each one of these photos. If I click on it, it gives me options. Same thing in the ipad and we want to do auto import, so we're going to it's the second option auto import, and we're going to enable that. And you can turn it on and off so that sometimes you want it working and sometimes you don't so when you're scouting you want it working and when you're not scouting you don't want it working so then what I'm going to do is I can go back to my camera itself and I'm going to take a picture of all of you guys well, I can't fit all of you but some of you guys and my computer and I'm gonna take the picture there we go and now once I have taken the picture on I go backto light room there it is right there so the photo is there for us and now I can force it up too oh it's all up to date so it's already gone up to the server and then if I come over to light room here let's go down to our mobile here's our scouting photos and there we are so that photo is now available to me. But the beautiful thing about this photo is that when I go to the map module oh and I click on this photo there we are in seattle okay, how do I use that? Remember we talked about information finding photos, right? The mohr touchpoints I can have about finding my photos, the better off I'm going to be so if I'm taking pictures and I don't have the the gps locator on the top of my camera because I want to flash on the top of my camera um I'm going to have a phone with me the phone is always gps located so I could be taking my photos and if I'm in some place that I want to remember so every time I'm with a senior a bride or I'm doing portrait sal on location I take the port the photos but then I also take a photo of the location in the same direction, you know, take a picture so that I know where it was taken then when it comes back it literally I don't have to import it it already does it by the time I get back to the studio I already have the location waiting in my studio for me. Once I get there, I then pull up my photos. So let me show you a, uh let me show you this in action than, um where did I put that? So I'm going to show you my scouting when I was on the plane, so I went here's, my creative live, this is my scouting uh, photos from the airplane. All right, so we took off is really cloudy, so I was just taking pictures out out this was with a camera, so I'm taking a picture with the camera this is not a phone this is a camera and I'm like these air cool photos but I wonder where I am right? So all I did is turn on my phone and take a picture and if you look the phone itself hold on let me when I want to do is I'm gonna highlight all these images I'm gonna put them into a collection and that collection is where is waldo okay simon in a minute I'm going to include all these selected photos in the where's waldo and I'm gonna put them inside of uh inside of let's see here and create so now I've got a bunch of images here that I want to find out where I am so now I'm going to go to my mobile scouting and I'm gonna look for a bunch of photos here so there's all of my photos and I'm going to import those into that where's waldo so now I have you can see that I've got a bunch of photos some of them have a tag on him see that tag that means it's an iphone photo that has a gps tag on it so now all I have to do is say, well, they were taken I've got the timing set and so I know that this photograph here look at this this is one with a tag on it this is the one that I took hold on I still haven't selected there we go okay, so here's the one that I took with my photo with my phone here's the one I took with camera so where is that location? All I have to do is click on here and synchronize so shift click synchronized right here I get just gonna hit synchronize the meta data and I'm going to tell it to synchronize the camera information and synchronized when I do that now when I go to the maps module there's where I wass double click on that I can see the photos I can zoom in zoom out and this wass next to esmeralda county nevada the united states here's the roads that I take to get there I have to take this ninety five up from las vegas so take the ninety five up from las vegas and you will find a weird little pond thing going on right here see that there's the pond that I was just looking at you okay, so if you looking out the air plane and you see something amazing down there and you think I want to go there someday take your phone, take a picture with the gps on and turn it back off and be a good little citizen and when you get home you will know where that wass you'll find you'll be able to find the brown to get there because gps is always working because it's up there yeah, that would work even if you weren't using the light room mobile you could just bring the photo in from your phone and it would do the same thing basically is that correct it's just that that's cool tohave the light room in that extra step means that I won't do it but this I will do because it's already there and basically when I'm doing ah, a place when I'm somewhere where I don't know where I am and I'm trying to gps locate myself basically I want an image from my iife phone for every new location, so when we get to the new location, take a picture with the phones to get back my pocket start shooting when we get to new location do the same thing and so there's one photo per one and they're all time so there soon as I put him in a collection like that take the photos from the iphone thrown in the collection, take the photos from the shoot put in the collection and then just highlight the phone photo highlight the rest of the photos synchronized and now I have the gps location on all of my photos from my camera rather than from my phone so from here on out, if I ever want to find you know, where was that shoot that I did you know I love this photo where did I shoot it I can just look and find it so the more you khun do toe add data to the photos the more likely you are to be ableto find them when you need them and also the more likely you are to be able to discover better versions of the photos go out and shoot it again take another person to that location I can't tell you how long it took me when I was in graduate snow when I was an undergraduate school I was I would drive around a still location scouted back then even the film days but I had a four by five camera and a dark cloth and running around and so I found this really cool old tree and these two old roads farmland and it would get foggy out there and I love fog and don't get much fog in arizona and so I wouldn't find this this amazing tree it had this church in this chair and so I photographed it then two years later I came back and I photographed it again and the tree the tree was growing and the chair was deteriorating and so finally about five years later this chair was just a gnarly mess of cotton and sticks and whatever in the same place never moved but it was just all messed up and the tree was this big tree well fast forward like fifteen years or whatever and I can't remember where that tree wass because it was film so there's no gps whatever and I had forgotten where it was a new kind of where it was but city had grown and so I remembered it being in the middle of nowhere well now it's not in the middle of nowhere it's right next to a bunch of houses but the tree has been chopped down but you can still see remnants of the chair the chair out survived a huge oak tree because there's just like little bits of like you can see the stick with a little bit of cotton hanging off it or whatever it's still there but the tree is gone like whoever cut the tree down didn't take chair it's just so funny but it's it's you know in the middle of the city now so anyway gps is very useful and it's very easy to do it this way it would be easier to have a gps thing on your camera but that's super annoying and I'm really upset that camera makers haven't figured out that we want gps on all the cameras not just this one and then that one and then this one and pros want gps on their camera where as you know they only put him on like the I don't know what sits on like a seventy d maybe it's on that one or maybe it's on the seventy or like you know it's on these like little tiny non pro cameras I can't we have it on pro cameras anyway yes so the gps is actually being determined where the camera is physically located so if you're a thirty thousand feet traveling that five hundred miles an hour you've got a little bit of a problem pinpoint where that that's why that's why when you go to the map module my pin is actually if you zoom out my pin is here not here but it's close I mean close enoughto find it because I know what I saw and then aiken because I'm looking at a photo of the thing I can see that was what I was interested in and if I zoom in that indeed was the place and so you know you just have to do a little extrapolation and figure it out but you write at thirty thousand feet six hundred miles an hour you know you gotta know okay I'm heading north it's north you know yeah but it's really useful when you are driving so let's go to this is how I scouted a huge photo shoot that we did um in uh in scotland so this photo shoots in scotland if I go to the map module and I zoom out consume way out go over to scotland hope there they are see those photos are coming in so there's a bunch of photos here as you go so you can see we took this road up and by the way, if you watch james bond films the latest james bond the one where they blew the house up skyfall that was right here so we were like right next to skyfall so and it it is an awesome place but anyway see all these photos so what I did is I took a tour and I got on a bus and I just let the couture guy drive the bus around and I just watched and every time I saw something coolidge wick with my camera and so my camera is gps tagging all the way around and then when I got done with the tour the next day was the photo shoot and so then all I had to do was pull up those those pinpoints and say okay, this is where we're going we're going to this place we gotta go here gotta go there because I had it on my gps I knew exactly where we need to be and I had a picture of it so we just literally drove up the road that we needed to be to go to that spot take the picture moved to the next spot so and I could sift through the photos you know I could I could click here and I could sift through see this is a photo uh here too that I was like, I want that location so I just like what like that and it doesn't need to be a great picture it's just an iphone picture but it locks the location tells me that's where I want to be and so then when I as soon as I you know as soon as I know that location then it's easy for me to you know go and find you know the photo and so then we end up shooting you know that kind of stuff there all right so that's that's how we find that location so literally location scouting for me happens every single day if I'm awake I'm location scouting I'm walking on location scouting that's right so the more you can do that the better off you are I thought I'd sure I do this a lot but I shoot through every note they used the camera in ever net which also has a gps tag and then you can add keywords and tags right and ever note so let's say you're traveling and you know you're going fast and not going to remember necessarily certain details or whatever can throw it right into every note and then you can pull it up through like roman copy the comments and put it right into the metadata that's great so gps tag is very valuable and you can see that on all of these raw photos that I have here I have literally tags on all of my raw photos even though the camera has no cheap b s all right, so utilize those gps location services all right? Yeah, quickly or you again? How do you get the gps tag from the iphone shot into the camera shot without the thing on the camera that the gps in here so the first thing I do is I collect so I go to my in my auto import that's coming in from the cloud so I first come to that so that's the if you go there that's my um so I go to mobile and I go to my iphone scouting and I grab those photos and I dragged those photos into you know, whatever ah place I want teo to work on them. So where did we put that in? Where's waldo there we go so I dragged them into here and once I have them in there I drag the photos from the same shoot into there so that they're all together even though they're in separate folders because the iphone scouting comes in on on one folder and then the photo shoot's on another folder so I get them into the same collection or you could grab the iphone photos and drag them into your shoot so it physically moved them that's fine to either way is fine the key is to get a photo that has a tag on it and it like for instance, I have a photo that has a tag here so this is the iphone photo I don't know where I am like I wonder where I am right now, right? And so I highlight that, and then I just say okay, right around this time frame is where I'm going too. You can't go too far because we are traveling a six hundred miles an hour, but right around this time frame, I'm going to sink the meta data and I'm going to say, synchronize that stuff and then from then on out, if I go to the map module, you can see where I am and I'm not far out of phoenix, so I'm like right outside of the airport, basically. So this is phoenix, so I here's the airport like right here, and we went this way and took a right turn, and we still hadn't gotten out of the clouds and I was like, I wonder where I am so anyway, that's sze, just a synchronization of that metadata just make sure that your camera and your phone are on the same time, so whatever time is here, look at it and program it into your camera so that's calculating the right time and then you these get off, they're not atomic clocks, and so you really need to update them on a regular basis like once a month there could be a good idea tto look at it when you're gonna go out on a shoot, just look at it and see is that really saying the right time if it isn't updated, usually get off by a few minutes every month or so pretty what lane? Yeah, you selectively import iphone photos into the light room yeah, you can in fact, if I wanted to do that from here instead of having the auto import feature on, all I have to do is go and click on that collection and when I click on let me pull it up so if you if they want to switch to that in there, um, if I'm here, if I go to this collection, so once I'm in the collection, if I hit this little up arrow in the up arrow aiken say, add photos and then when I click on add photos, it goes to my iphone, library and that's where I so you can you can selectively say, I just want this one, this one, this one, this one to go up, but when I'm location scouting, I just turned it on, so I don't even have to deal with that, and then when I've done location scouting, I'll turn it off because I don't need every photo I shoot to go up there, just the ones that I need
