Lightroom Workflow Q&A
Uh let's start with this one why do you have to export the catalog if you're using light room c c uh creative cloud isn't it accessible from the cloud expert the catalog okay, I think what what's being asked there is when we were working on our cataloger our main catalog are working catalog we took a job and we exported it to its own catalogue so that we could send it somewhere and have someone else work on it or so that we could work on it somewhere else. And so that workflow is so that we can work specifically with a catalogue in a computer that is fast and able to accomplish a great deal at the same time if I'm on the cloud and I want to do the same thing on my ipad aiken certainly all I have to do is go to any collection whatsoever and click on this little icon here you see that icon that turns on and off right there if I click on that everything in that specific collection will be available on the cloud and it will be available on my on my tablet. However, when it's on the cloud i...
t is there's not a light room adjuster in the cloud that is a place for it to be where I can share I can I can actually share that link so for instance, if I go to this cloud link right here I can go up to the top right hand corner and make it public. If I click make it public, then it will create a link, a short link that I can send to a client. That client can go to that page and they can look at those files ls and they can even comment and it comments will come back in to light room, but they can't adjust them there. The only places you had just photos are inside your computer or on your ipad or on your iphone or on some other mobile device that's where you adjust your image is the cloud is a service to connect them and also a service to share them. So that's why so in our case, we wanted to send a catalogue out with a laptop somewhere, or we wanted to send it to shoot dot at it in orderto work there, doug wants to know. Can you remove the adobe photoshopped light room credit? Look, when it posts of facebook, I don't think you can, but I don't think you want teo. Yeah, because when you add light room credit, you're you're kind of adding a tag that puts you out on the web, you know? So if someone's interested in lighter, you might get a little more connection points off. So I'm not sure that I want to remove that I think I would rather people know I created it plus I'm a big light room fan so I think I would rather people know that I shared it directly from light room which means someone must have seen our our post right? Yeah so let's go toe where's walden are no it's not our wells waldo its are what the faa doesn't know and let's and I'll see any comments oh I haven't synchronized it so it's downloading the comments right now that's so there's a little button right here see that little button you gotta synchronize that oh there we go great jared nice nice live demonstration awesome very cool elegance that someone gave us some emoticons awesome jan way to go I don't know how to do that you should jan get jan on creative lives showing how to put it motive cons inside of light erm I'm not sure exactly must have been something she put a transfers in that school so anyway um those are oh and you can show all the comments if you go to facebook and see my page there's all the comments right there so cool all right? So it says you see what the faa doesn't know won't hurt them comes in because that's what we put inside a light room it created the title for it unfortunately it didn't make the caption so still still working on that but the beautiful thing is that I can do it with my block because I have control over my blawg and so we'll talk about that on the final hour of our workshop do you need to downsize the photos the other picture pictures pixels or does uploading the picture from your phone automatically downsize the pixels no the phone is going to send the full file up and then that full files going to come down to me and then when I post it on facebook or wherever I'm posting it that photo is going to be whatever size I put inside of the the published service so when we're setting up pole publishers I told it I want you to be this size of file when you send it out so that's that's where we get that okay all right um when you we're when nude versions of light room come out version three four and now six larry mass if you want to update the catalogue for let's say version six once a new catalog is created can you delete the old catalog versions maybe would you yeah I think I don't actually delete him yeah just in case for some reason I needed to go back because I screwed something up yeah or because there was a corruption issue or whatever I just never deleted them um I do delete the old version of light room because I don't need it accidently opening up something else plus I don't need that extra space taken up on my laptop um hard drive space on a laptop nowadays is at a premium because most of them are solid state, so they're smaller than they used to be and so I I I'm very picky about what goes on the laptop um but I think that I think the important thing about um catalogues is that when you update toe light room c c it's goingto have to do an update but it's updating copy of that to protect the old one and keep the old one as a protection against losing what you've done. But once you get about two or three or four days away from that upgrade, the old one ceases to matter because you've changed the new one so much that going back to the old one would be a waste so and and as long as you are backing up every time you quit light room, you always have a good backup because you it's it. They used to have it back up on start, which was a really dumb idea because then you work on it and you close it down and all the work you did is gone if you loosen, so now that you when you're closing it, you're making the backup you always have the latest backup so just a cz long as you're backing that up and backing it up to a cloud, and if you're on the creative cloud and you don't have dropbox, just back it up to your c c account because you're creative cloud is right here too, so if you go, if you go into your hard drive space, you go over to your creative cloud files. This is on the cloud and it's also on all of your computers. So do your backups there if you don't have a drop box, I have a drop box, so I choose to put the bigger stuff on the drop box, and then I keep the my creative cloud lean, but I only used the greater cloud for things that I'm using constantly, so I use brushes and settings and I, you know, store like graphics and logos and stuff like that inside of the creative cloud, because those air connected into my libraries so that I can use them. I love that literally in photoshopped my all of my, you know, logos and stamps and brushes and stuff, I make one and it instantly transfers over. I can make brushes on my phone, by the way, and then once I've made the brush on my phone and I like it. It syncs up and it's inside a photo shop. So you know, there's, a there's, a there's. A lot of people were worried about the idea. I don't know that I could stand paying nine dollars and ninety nine cents a month for photo shop, cc and light room c c but they don't grasp the immensity of the things that are at their fingertips. You know that connection point is huge. The fact that it's synchronizing all that stuff is a big deal. So, dana, dana has a question. This one got two votes. If I have only one master catalog for all my photos actually suggested by tim grey, will this slow down light room depends on how big that master catalog gets. Yeah. And remember when we first started, I showed two different versions of a workflow situation of a computer workflow situation. The first workflow is what do you do if you are a working professional and you're moving a lot of files? That's my work flow, which is it comes in, gets worked on in the working catalogue and then exits out to individual catalogs in the archive. The second is for someone who doesn't shoot as much and is not keeping as much because it's not a client base situation, because if I was shooting on li for me, instead of keeping six hundred images from a day's worth of shooting, I would be keeping twenty five or thirty images or maybe a hundred images tops from a day so that catalogs and very small it'll grow and then they'll get really small again then it will grow and then I would get really small again and so for those people who are literally doing their own personal work or they're just doing a couple of jobs here and there or they're doing artwork where they get you are your own boss those kind of people they can get away with a master catalog and it's just going to grow incrementally over time and I would suggest that in most cases is not going to grow so fast that it's going to be you know, unmanageable once you get to sixty thousand images in a catalog it's a little slow it's not terribly slow but it's a little slow and when we get to the portfolio section of the workshop I'll show you ways to streamline that so that even if you have sixty thousand images it's not bogging you down on a lot of that has to do just with the way you organized the images but that being said try and keep your catalogue as lean as possible because the smaller it is the faster it is and so in a case like that, I would just say, you know don't put meaningless unimportant stuff in the catalog and if it starts to get too slow go through and find some of the stuff that you never have accessed take that and kind of make it into its own collection or its own folder and then get it out as a secondary catalogue and say this is stuff that I never access put it over here open it up if you need it one final question I think is there a way to ask the light room database and negative question example find all photographs that don't have a key word I've not been his diligent about key wording as I could have been well so yes there's actually away so I can go to um let's let's go to a wedding or let's go to the left go here and now these do these have keywords okay this one doesn't cure it okay so let's highlight all of these except for this one image away they all have key words no some of them do something don't okay good. Okay, so if I am in a particular folder and I go up to the library filter up here at the top and I go to the metadata area click on meta data I can go in and say um metadata status oh wait hold on I'm thinking it's here but if it's not it could be other places to uh do you do oh, you know where it is hold on. Better idea okay, so, um first thing first I'm gonna copy the name of this I'm gonna rename this folder and just copy that I just need to get that information so I copy cancel and then I'm gonna go and create a collection and I'm going to create a smart collection that smart collection is going to be called no key words and then I'm going to go and say I'm going to put that collection inside of our light room class here and I'm going to say this has to match all of this and I'm going to say uh, see somewhere in here there's a option for does not contain keywords but I gotta find it I think it's under meta data but so there's keywords oh our empty there we go okay, so key words are empty so if you're key words are empty that's where you would also put in like contains girl or whatever. So if your key words are empty and then I'm also going to say that I want to search a specific folder. So I'm going to say the location are saying it's a source that's where it is source folder uh contains all and then I'll paste that name and hit create there you go these are all the images that don't have keywords in them so now if I highlight him here's where you gotta be careful because I have a smart filter it's it's a smart collection so it's it knows instantaneously if I change this. So if I take a photo and I keyword it, uh, child and I hit enter, it disappears because now it's not following the rules. So what you have to do when you do this is you highlight all of your so you find your images and then once you have them found, you have to go and click on it again, create a normal collection, take that normal collection and call it no keywords and then call it noel keywords to inside there and create and so now you have a no keywords to now you can start keyword ing and it'll stay. But if you look at the gnocchi words smart collection is going to start disappearing out of there. All right, so you got a smart about it because that smart collection will outsmart you and it will start disappearing like, wait, wait, I'm not done two key wording, so

I've been using Lightroom for about a year now. I'm pretty comfortable with the basics and a little more. Sometimes knowing what I want to learn next depends on knowing what's out there to be learned. I listened in to this course from work to get an idea of whether there was enough new content to warrant buying the course. Though Jared covers lots that I know, he filled many small things I didn't know and covered some bigger topics that were new to me. I decided that I wanted to own this course because I respond best to structured learning, and Jared starts at point A and carries through to point Z, so to speak. I have watched his live and rebroadcast courses before and I really like and learn from his teaching style too, so I'm sure this course will be the boost I need as I prepare to subscribe to Lightroom CC instead of just using my local copy. Though another reviewer's tone wasn't very nice, I have to agree that it would helpful to have a written synopsis or outline of courses to help when deciding whether to purchase. Looking at the titles of the included videos is helpful, but not enough. This would be especially useful when a person hasn't seen the live broadcast first, and is simply evaluating a course in the course library.

I learned a lot from this class when I took it a long time ago. I'm not as fond of his ego but that's fine as I don't have to be around him all day long. What I found extremely useful was the video on synching Lightroom Presets. I set this Dropbox synching system on my laptop and desktop Mac computers and it works perfectly. I also use it for other programs as well like Photoshop and another program called Keyboard Maestro. Thanks for your help Jared. Much appreciated trick.

I am new to Lightroom and from the start of the course it became very clear to me that Jared is one quality person with a real passion to explain everything with great skill and a motivation for success. I did not hesitate to download his course as this is the basis for my personal development and the journey to experience great photography.
