Setting Transformational Objectives
okay, now that you've completed your abc, you know, your audience, what they need a little bit about the context, what's the next step now? The next step is for you to set yourself the right objective? Why? Because think about it, if you don't have a clear objective, when you give a presentation, what happens then I'll tell you what happens, nothing. If you don't have a clear objective, for sure you're not going to achieve it. And again, think about it. What the objective of representation? If you were to summarize the objective of representation in one word, which one would you choose? The mistake? I see. Is that too many presentations aim only to inform? We think that our objective is to just to share information with the audience. Now the problem with that is that we forget most of what we're here within 30 seconds, that's how our brain works. If you want people to remember information, I'm not saying that there cannot be your objective, but if that's your only objective then there ...
is no need to make a presentation, give them a document, give them a coffee, give them some time so that they can drink their coffee and read your document and then you share some ideas, you answer their questions much more effectively. Presentations are very bad at informing people, but they are great at transforming them transformation. That's my word, as a presenter, you want to transform your audience, you want to change your audience in some way, remember this, think about the presentation, you are developing as part of the scores. If after this presentation, your audience doesn't believe feel or do anything new or different, believe feel or do anything new or different, then you've wasted your time and even worse you've wasted there's for example when steve jobs launched the first iphone, it wasn't aiming at informing us, he didn't want us to remember how many pixels the screen had or how fast the processor was. He wanted us to buy, he wanted us to desire it. He wanted journalists to write really positive articles about it because if we could remember all the information but nobody wanted to buy, nobody wanted to write positive articles about it, he would have failed. That's why I mean his objective was not information. He didn't just want to share information with his audience, he wanted to create that transformation that change in the audience now for you, what can you do, what can you do to set yourself the right transformational objective Now think about the presentation you are developing here and simply complete this sentence after this presentation. My audience will well what up to you, what would they believe differently, what will they feel differently? What will they do differently? And that becomes your transformational objective and I can promise you, if that's what you do when you prepare your presentations, Forget about power point at this stage, start with the audience and then set yourself the right objective then when you do start thinking about your key messages, which is yes, the next step and we're going to work on that together later. But those messages will be less focused on what your audience needs to know, sharing of information, which is not your objective. They will be much more focused on what they need to believe, feel and do, which is exactly your objective when you present. So here is the second exercise for you, think about your presentation and simply complete the sentence after this presentation. My audience will spend a few minutes on that and then once you've done we can start working together from the next lessons onwards, it will be a series of three lessons and on each lesson I'm going to introduce a different brainstorming technique for you to be able to come up with a compelling message.
