Myths of YouTube Success
There's a couple myths that every time I talk to somebody about YouTube, they're like, "Well, I couldn't do it because I'm not X, Y, Z." So let's talk about these. The first one, I'll just be honest, it's that we believe we have to be younger, prettier, thinner. We have to have perfect hair. That's what was on me back for a long time. (laughs) That you have to be-- One of the big myths is that you have to be young. Only young people make YouTube videos. Only young people watch YouTube videos. And that's just not true. If you're thinking that you're just not the right person, or maybe that the thing is you're not extroverted enough or outgoing enough. I promise, you really don't have to be. The next myth is that-- No, just to go along with that myth, it's that people don't want perfection. They want you. My husband picked this picture because he thought it showed my weirdness. (laughs) They don't want you to be perfect or to be absolutely always put together or super outgoing because wh...
at they connect with when you're watching a video is a real live person, a person who's fallible, and above all, they want to see themselves reflected in the videos. So if your best customer is a mom of four who is tired and worn out, and you shoot a video and you're like, "Guys, my kid are driving me crazy, but I'm still here making gorgeous jewelry," they're going to connect with that. That is far more engaging and creates far more loyalty, and they want to support you. Than if you were always perfect, always put-together. Your hair's always done. You never have any problems. The more you can be your imperfect self, the more your audience is going to connect with you, and I have really just proved that through the years. (laugh) So another myth is that you have to be well-spoken. You have to be funny. You have to have a great voice. You have to not sound like Minnie Mouse, or have a lower, awesome accent (laughs). That's just not true. Like I said, people want to see you for who you are, and they're going to connect with you whatever your voice is like, whatever you sound like. No matter how many times you say um or like, or you (clicks with mouth), which I do a lot, make that popping sound, they're going to realize you're a real person, and that what they want to see. And if you sell a product, they really want to know that they're buying and supporting a real person. Now another myth is that only extroverts and attention junkies succeed. How many of you guys have seen a YouTube video of somebody who's just so over the top? They're super energetic, and that's the myth that we have is that you have to be that kind of energy. Well, I will let you in on secret. I'm a major introvert, and I don't always even get out of my PJs when I shoot videos. I often have PJ bottoms on and a nice top on top. (laughs) So, and one of the great things about YouTube is it lets you connect with a bigger audience while you're still all alone (laughs). So it doesn't wear you out in the same way as if you go to a conference and you meet two thousand people in person, shaking hands. So it lets you connect with them, and then really get a personal or intimate connection with you without you spending all that energy, and you don't even have to want the attention to be able to connect with people. The more you make it personal and the more you're yourself, the more connected they're going to feel, so it that means introverted or quiet or not over the top, like I said, people want to see themselves reflected, so they're going to connect with that. Now, the other myth is that you need to be an expert. You have to have read all of the books in order to talk about what you want to talk about. Whether you're taking about your product and you're a jewelry maker or a bag maker, or you are talking about your work day or your life as an entrepreneur, you don't have to have it figured out. In fact, people love to watch the journey. One of the most effective kind of videos you can make is your own learning. What are you learning? What are you figuring out? What have you gotten wrong? I do a regular kind of recurring content that is about the lessons I've learned. People love that because they just like to know that they don't have to have it figured out for them to do their thing. And one of the things to keep in mind is that if you're an entrepreneur with your own business, selling your product, a lot of the people who are watching you want that life. Maybe they don't want to do exactly what you do, but they love seeing somebody who's following their dream, and they love knowing they can follow their dream without being perfect. So, another myth is you have to have the right, or expensive, equipment or software. I'm actually going to show you how to set up your video studio with zero dollars and five minutes, so this totally, you don't have to have the right equipment or software. You can start right now with your phone, and remember, we're going for imperfect and personal. That's what's gong to connect with your buyers, so the more fancy you are, like this video studio we're in, this is not super personal or intimate. Not in the same way that your YouTube video's. It's you talking the camera's going to be.
