Why Video can Help your Business
You might be wondering why should I even spend the time or energy, why, why would I bother with videos? The first one and the most important one is that you are going to get found. So people are going to be able to find you. I don't know if you guys can tell, but that's a tiny picture of me with the giant redwoods. You are that tiny little person and the giant redwoods are all of the Internet. And this has probably been your problem with your online business, is how do people find me? How do I find new customers? Well, if you can create a video that answers a question people are searching for, they're going to be able to find you. Because here's the really cool thing, hardly anybody else is doing videos. I know it might seem like YouTube is huge, but hardly any other product makers and small handmade businesses are doing videos. The ones that are blow up, because there's so little of that kind of content online, so you're going to have a much easier time being found. So YouTube, becaus...
e it's the second largest search engine, is a place people are going to look for you and what you do. So it's going to help you get found. The next thing is it's going to build trust. When people see your face and you talk to them and you being imperfect and you being yourself, they're going to start to trust you. They're going to like think, oh, I could send her my money and she'll send me a product because she's a real live person. So that trust is so important, as you guys know, the more trust you have with your audience, like your leads, the people who aren't yet your customers, the more sales you'll make. So more trust always equals more sales because people will know and this is especially true if you sell a higher end, more expensive product, you have to build trust over time, right? People aren't going to go out and drop 200 dollars on some girl they found on the Internet, they're going to need to trust you and believe that you're actually going to give them what you promised you're going to give them. So video's also, even though you don't have to be an expert to start doing videos, it builds your authority. It cements that you know what you're talking about even if you do those videos we talked about which is just you learning and your mistakes, the fact that you're sharing it online automatically makes you an expert in peoples' opinions. Now that's kind of crazy, because you might not be an authority, you might be in the middle of learning, but just that process and you sharing it people are going to say, oh, they know what they're talking about, they know what they're doing. And that kind of authority is going to translate into more and more opportunities. So CreativeLive only asked me to come here because they could see that I was doing videos online and that I could talk in sentences. (laughs) Other opportunities, if you want to speak at conferences, if you want to get a book deal, if you want to travel around and do trunk shows, when people search your name and they see videos of how you interact they're going to, oh, I can trust her, she has authority, he knows what he's talking about and that kind of authority is going to make it more likely for you to get those deals and build those relationships. Now the other thing it does is and this is one of my favorite things about YouTube, is YouTube confidence, video confidence is business confidence. The more you do videos, the more you connect with people, the more you just get in front of the camera and talk at it, the more confidence you're going to have when you do a craft show or a trade show or you go in and you talk to a retailer or you are talking to a customer because you've said it so many times on video. One of my favorite things about shooting videos is that if you do that introduction where you introduce yourself over and over and over, when you meet a stranger and they ask you what you do it just flows right out of you, you know what to say. And if you can get over the self doubt that's keeping you from shooting videos and being awesome on video, that's going to trickle into every area of your life. You're going to go for bigger deals, for bigger customers, for bigger shows because you're going to have that confidence you know you can handle it. And after you've really made a mistake on camera, especially if you're doing a live video, I once spilled coffee all down me during a live video, and I was like, whoops, well, let's keep going. Afterwards I got e mails from people saying, you handled that so well, oh my goodness you weren't freaked out at all. And it was because I had done it so much that then like if I fall down now, which I really hope I don't, that I know I can handle it, I'm not so freaked out. That actually mirrors quite a few of the comments we've had online, people getting in touch who were watching at home. So our secret tree house said, not extroverted enough, that's me and I don't feel interesting enough for people to want to watch. So some of just what you were mentioning there. Also another comment here from cow art who said, she's nailing it, I've gotten over these myths but now my stumbling block is I don't have enough interesting content to sustain a channel that people will want to subscribe to. And I'm hoping that you'll be touching on that creative inspiration later on in the program and we'll definitely be getting to that. Yes, we're going to go deep into creating content and having a never ending list of ideas, because that is absolutely what holds people back. Or they might do it and get that initial like, OK, I can do this and just run out of ideas. So we are going to list tons of content ideas, we're going to really help you narrow it down and niche it down so you can do it over and over and over again. And the person who said they weren't interesting enough, I actually know our secret tree house, she's plenty interesting. (laughs) But that's the thing is every person is plenty interesting to your audience, because you're doing something super cool, right? You are making a product, you're building a business, you are doing your own thing, even if all you're doing is starting a YouTube channel, people find that super interesting. So just the fact that you're doing it, totally interesting enough.
