Photoshop: Dodge and Burn
So now I have a rock down there but the foreground doesn't need to be bright it doesn't. All it just needs to be is a hint of rocks cause remember that rock is casting a shadow. So at this point what we wanna do is we want to create a burn layer. You just simply click on the layer menu options. So these are called layers. I'm gonna click on this little set of drop down menus right here on the layer and I'm gonna create a new layer. When I create the layer I'm gonna create a mode called Soft Light and I'm gonna fill it with 50% gray. Just like that, and I'm gonna hit okay. So now I have a layer that's just gray. And anytime I paint something darker than gray it's gonna be a burn and anything I make that's lighter than gray it's gonna be a dodge or it's gonna brighten up the photograph. So I've got a burn layer now and I'm gonna go over to my burn dodge tool. Which is this thing that looks like a hand and click on that. And now I'm in the burn mode and I can choose whether I wanna choose...
highlights. I wanna burn highlights, midtones or shadows. So we'll start with the midtones. And we're just gonna start burning in this rock so that it's not quite so bright. And we can even do a little bit on that bush too cause we don't need it to be very bright. And I'm gonna burn in on this rock a little bit as well. And even down here under this bush. This bush over here doesn't need to be all that bright as well. So I'm just kinda burning down all of this area that I don't want. And this is at 30%. So it takes a little while to burn it down. And then I can go into the shadows cause it's only burning the shadows or the highlights or the or the midtones, depending on what you choose. And as we burn this down, then it becomes less obvious that that's a manufactured rock. And it looks pretty dang good. The darker I make this the more natural it'll feel.

I wish more people would present this way! Each step from beginning to end demonstrated in short, concise and useful actions. Every tool and technique is something that I either use, (now better) or will start using because I now understand how to use it efficiently. I highly recommend this course!

Finally, a video tutorial that taught me what I've known on basic level and truly explore how to use it properly and what everything means. I've been waiting for something like this for awhile now. Greatly improves my technique now so thank you for this!
