Day 26: Hand Lettered Quote

(soft music) Hi, this is Erik Marinovich, and this is 28 To Make. Today's project, we are doing a lettering piece, and this lettering piece is gonna be the phrase, (paper crinkles) keep smiling. What I love about lettering is that it's something to jumpstart everyone's creativity. You can do it while you're riding on the train, you don't wanna pay attention in class, you can do it a little on your binder paper. It's just something that's easy to get started on. It's a great start to kind of kick off a creative project, so the phrase keep smiling, is that, life is pretty great, and there's time where it's not, but we also to have remind ourselves just to keep smiling, 'cause even on our worst days, they're still pretty good. And what's great about doing this is that you can do it on any size, I've just picked this tracing paper because I have it here, but you can do it on a scale that's maybe more comfortable. You can do something even tinier. You can paint it, whatever. And it doesn'...

t have to be a brush script, I think it's more of just the activity of lettering out the phrase, and also, one thing I wanna emphasize is that you can definitely pull apart the phrase keep smiling, so it doesn't have to be just in a script, like I mentioned, it could be in block lettering, it could be bubble lettering, it's how you interpret that phrase. There can even be illustration involved. I want you to basically carry out what the phrase means to you using letters that you're comfortable drawing in, and again, take 20 minutes, I think, just starting and finish is an achievement in itself, but setting yourself to that 20 minute deadline is really helpful, because I know for myself is that I can do this all day, so it's nice to actually put a cap on it and just be done. Another thing, too, is I want everybody to document it, it would be nice to share how everyone else, like I said, interprets the word or the phrase keep smiling. And when you do, make sure to hashtag 28toMake. (bright music)

I just loved the way this was presented and the immediate connection of the videos and their content which helped me discover and try things I would not have thought I could do. The affirmations from others doing the same thing and being able to gather ideas from the 'sharing' bit was also important for me. I have gained a lot creatively and it has fired parts of my imagination that lay hidden. I am just sorry it is formally over. I missed the last x3 sessions and the portfolio bit due to illness but will complete the other tasks and will continue explore developing those that really opened a creative slot for me. Above all thanks to the tutors - each of you - I loved the content you chose and the enthusiasm and creative energy you conveyed in just a few moments and the generous attitude of the skills share. That's it - Thank you, would recommend to anyone not to miss this opportunity.

I was looking for a way to get back into the habit of creating. The class has some fun ideas for projects that are easy to work on, which is super helpful. Every day I was excited to see what my new project was! But...a few seemed to not be what I considered sketching or drawing and didn't seem to fit the description. Overall, very helpful though :)

Best course ever on Creative Live. It's the foundation for doing anything or everything creative. Even if you think your only creative interest is say photography ...and you're not a drawer, maker or artist of any kind ...think again. This course will open up your mind and you will discover that actually you are a creative and you can pick up a pencil and draw... and it doesn't take up much time... 10-20 minutes a day. In the beginning it's not about the end result, it's about the doing and how it sets something off in your brain. It will make a huge difference to everything else you put your hands and mind to in life.
