How to Set Up Your Artboard
So in the segment we get to dive into they'll be illustrator, which is where I for my work always get teo have fun and and start designing so I'm going to show you how I designed the pages of my portfolio also introduced to you some of the templates that I have included in the course downloads for you um and talk about how you can customize those for your own page width and in your portfolio so we're going to be designing not an entire portfolio but six to eight pages today just to give you an idea chosen the most complex one so if you can follow along with these you should be able tio do anything you want an illustrator so I'm gonna go ahead and open up illustrator I am working in c s six today and I'm gonna hop over to find her and open a couple of the templates that I had that come with the purchase of this course so there is a template for pages and a template for double sided pages I'm gonna start with the template for just a regular page this would be for one sided pages for your...
portfolio that you are going to print, I'll show you in a little while how to save these if you want to publish digitally to the web two so I'm I'm going to go over a little bit uh page of a little bit of math, so grab a pencil and a piece of paper so that you can jot this down. This template is set to my the width and height of my pages for my portfolio, but you can customize those for your own. So my pages measure thirteen inches by nine and a half inches. It's, um, and just a quick note on why I did that is definitely, I think eight and a half by eleven would be easiest to print it's the most standard, but I I think that for a lot of applications, it's going to be too small for you to really be able to showcase your work so something a little larger you can see here that this is the size that it into that being and it's thirteen by nine and a half so bad you have to include margin with your with your pages, which is what I've built into this illustrator documents. So I have an inch one point seven five inch margin on each of these, which gives me a printable area of eleven point two, five by nine and a half. I want to make sure that you know that another course download is an e book that I've written on, how to build your portfolio, and I've outlined all of these equations and math for you with places for you to put in your own measurements as well so if you get lost you can find it right there okay, so we'll discuss a little bit more about all all of these wits as we go but I'm going to get started with mine here today so this is what the temple it looks like I'm gonna zoom out so you can see it I have included nine pages you can of course make it less or more than that to if you want so in order to to start using this I'm going to delete the note that I've written here and I just wanna ungroomed everything so I'm going to select it all by hitting command a on my keyboard and under object select on group that's going to give me all of these bits more ungroomed tw and since this's just for your reference but I'm going to go ahead and deleted off this so that we can start working. So the easiest way to do this is that it is this text is in black so I want to select everything that's in black on my document and just delete it so I'm going to select one come up to object I'll see sorry come up to select same phil color that's going to select everything on my art board that's black and I can just hit the delete key to get rid of that so the margin is where we're not going to be putting anything over here in the margin it's just gonna be white space in order for your book to be able to fold eso we're going to be designing in this gray space right here. Another document that I want to open that I have already made are my branding elements, so I'm gonna zoom out, too, so you can see what this is. This is a document that I made in preparation for my portfolio, I suggest you do the same. These are my, uh, the patterns that I want to include in this portfolio, some text I've written that we'll get into, but this is the key art board, it has the fonts that I'm using my brand colors, my logo's and a couple of accents that I want to place around if you want to learn how to design these elements, all of the patterns and the illustrations and everything like that is what I cover in my first course design surface patterns from scratch that course will take you from opening up adobe illustrator all the way through designing all of these bits so that not what we're going to focus on today, but if this is what you want to learn, how to do to make sure the reference that course
