Create Bookmarks & a Table of Contents

key to any of this is good navigation. And so when you get a book, you really need a table of contents that you can actually go in because you're not going to read a 500 page novel in one sitting, you're gonna want to go chapter by chapter and see what's going on. So any good publication, no matter what you do for print or digital publishing online, there are certain things that you have to follow, and one of them is always set your files up so that whenever you put any type in there, we use paragraph in character styles. Styles were going to help you out tremendously. If you don't know about paragraph in character styles. Guess what I've got on in design video that walks through that. So the way these books air set up is all of my type is set up with the style and with my paragraph styles I have on my body copy. I have all of my subheds and all of my chapter headers. This saves a whole lot of time later, when I want to turn this into an E pub or interactive PdF, or even if I'm going j...

ust for print publishing. I can search and I can change just based on those paragraph styles. So setting up styles, absolutely important fundamental basic of any type of long book page layout always use styles if you've never heard of them. Now is the time. So huge advantage that we have with creating styles I would like a table of contents on. I would like a table of contents that I can navigate through at the beginning of my book. Now, if I have a very large book creating a table of contents and finding out what chapter starts on, what page and then developing the whole thing is quite tedious. Well, you can do it manually, but clearly you haven't got my video. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna generate a table of contents based on my paragraph styles. Quite easy. If everything set up, I'm gonna go into the layout menu and I'm going to generate a table of contents. This table of contents is going to be based on what paragraph styles I would like to use. So I have my paragraph of chapter had her paragraph style, so it finds every place where that was used and picks up that header and puts it in. So there is my chapter headers. I would like to use that as my table of contents. I'm gonna add that and it's going to self generate a table of contents wherever those headers have. That chapter had replied, It's going to give me that page number, and it's going to generate a table of contents, and I actually created a table contents paragraph style. Now one of the things that does here is it says, create pdf bookmarks. OK, if we ever exported this is a print, PdF for somebody to just to look at online or to print. When you do this, this actually creates a step of interactivity here, right there. Just a plain pdf. You want to navigate through it. The bookmarks are already set up. I consider bookmarks manually, but there's just no point. So if I were exporting this to a pdf, we're gonna get bookmarks. But I'm doing this to any pub, and it'll still give me this. So my chapter headers are going to be gathered from my book, is going to go in, and it's going to give me my table of contents. It gives me May loaded cursor. I click and drag and there is my table of contents right there. And I'm gonna set this so that my tabs or set in a little bit here, just a little bit small. They're great. And there's my table of contents right there. Beautiful. And I can go in and click in any of those and gives me my table of contents now, want to export? This is an E pub. I will have this table of contents where I can click on it, and it's gonna bring me right to that location, which is exactly what I want. That's what I need, because if we're going to set this up, we want to make sure we set this all up correctly. Now, one of the things that showed me when I was doing my table of contents that sets up bookmarks. So I'm gonna export this as just a basic print. Pdf. Okay, nothing more doesn't have to be in a pub because this is just a nen designed file. There's nothing really different about this. I'm in export this as a print. Pdf. I'm gonna click save and one of the things when I dio a print. Pdf is I can actually include bookmarks in there. So if I just wanted to take this pdf plain and simple send it to somebody posted on my website. I've already started my interactive path with this file, so I collect export. I view the whole thing it pops up is a pdf. I can print it. I can post on a website. I could send it to somebody, and I can navigate through this using my bookmarks. There they are. I click on them. It brings me right to that page right to that bookmark. Right where it's supposed to be simple. We've already started the navigation. We've already started the interactivity process right there that fast. What's cool about this is that when we actually get in here, my table of contents is also clickable. So if somebody doesn't know about bookmarks and they come into this pdf, I can hover over this and I can click on any one of these. You see, little hand and I get to that table of contents. It has automatically generated a link for me. I click on that and it brings me right to it that fast. So there's a lot of things you can do when you're file to set it up. To make life incredibly easy, you could manually put in bookmarks. It's a tedious pain set up your file just right. You've got it. So no matter what type of file that I do, we actually set these up all the time. My fixed lay out a pub. Same thing when I go in, all of my headlines right here. The names of each and every one of my images is set up as the actual photo title so I could use my photo title as my table of contents. And I'm going to go back to my second page here where my page is right there. I'm gonna create my table of contents here, based on where of applied that style layout, table of contents, and it's gonna be my photo title, and I'm gonna make it my table of contents. So it's gonna grab all that information. I click. OK, there's my table of contents already done. Now, if I do, this is an E pub. That's gonna be navigational. I can click on that walk right through the whole thing. Go and click on it. I'm right there. So let's try it. I'm gonna file export. Set this as a fixed Lay out a pub and click save. Look, OK, what it does when there was one setting in their That allows you to go ahead and choose how you want to navigate through here. So there it is. So as we go through, it gave me a little warning message. So I've got that and I got my little content and little warning message said, Hey, you know, you didn't go through and do it right. But there it is. You can see that it's clickable if this were a pdf. Now, what's interesting about this is when we do a table of contents in a reef. Lobel PD a real globally pub here. When I go under file export and export, this one of my choices in the window is how do I want to go through and do that? I set up my bookmarks, all right, using my table of contents feature. So if I say my navigation is going to be set up using my bookmarks, it's already there So that's my navigation. It's automatically set up with it. It's like great I click That shouldn't get the error message because I've set it up to be that way. And now it should rock and roll Well, that's happening. Do we have any questions? Yes, Apparently had asked, with a fixed layout, can most devices still read it? Okay, people are kind of wondering about what devices they can read these on older devices. Much older devices can't read a pub 3.0 Most of the new devices out there will be able to read a pub 3. files. It's still any pub type file. It's just different coating on the back end to give you text that's highlighted. You can go in and see the images as well. So yep allows you to do that. Absolutely. So we've now been able to go in and create a table of contents based on good layout practices. We can now have navigation through these using the table of contents, and when we take this, click on it, go through with the book. Whether it's floatable or fixed layout doesn't make any difference, because we showed you how to do this with a pdf. I showed you how we could go in and actually update this Here we g o And then if I were to do a re floatable pub with a table of contents goes through order. There it is. And navigation, Multilevel table contents. Same old font still missing. Here it is. Oh, look, there's my table of contents right there, Formatted Very pretty. But it's there. I click on that brings me right to it. Beautiful works in many different ways. So key elements of setting this up set it up like you would a normal print file. But always use paragraph styles. Always set up a table of contents for a table of contents. Conduct will double your bookmarks and bookmarks, and fixed re floatable or pdf's are going to be a huge advantage for any type of navigation. Like I said, you could set these up afterwards, but it's a tedious process. I'm not gonna show you how to set up afterwards because I want to show you best practices. But it's there. You have a question quick question from pearly. If you change a chapter name will the table of contents update, you have to update it yourself. So that's a really good question as I go through here. And, um, if I go in and change it here and I want to let's get that spelled wrong and look good if I want to update my table of contents, not a problem. I've changed something where my headers were. I could go back to my table of contents. Zoom back out and all I have to do is go back under my layout. It's like my table of contents. Go back into my layout and shoes. Update table of contents. If I move pages around, if I move anything around, it goes through. It just went in and updated it. It's all said and done. It was all rocking good right there. So you have to keep regenerating the table of contents because sometimes you'll flow copying and those these headlines will bump to the next page. And so you just want to update it to make sure this is done. People can do this manually. Waste of time. Set it up so that you could just put it in their rock and roll. Awesome layout when work a quick question on the fixed. If this is from Kathy Holden, does the text in the fixed pub become images? Or can a reader highlight to copy the text? Great question. The text is still active. Text. You can still increase and decrease the size and is still selectable. It'll Onley rast arise the images, which is very important to know. That's why a pubs are so great.
