Segment 3 - Highway to Happiness
Let's look at what is happiness in the realm of posit psychology this comes from an amazing research called sonya luba mirsky she wrote has a great book it's on my reading list that you got when you signed up for the chorus and it's called the how of happiness now it's kind of like the weight set point you know that you have that some people you just never can eat everything I never put on a pound and then some of us just look a look a cookie and a boom but they think that affect our happens fifty percent of our happiness is basically our genes cycle west weight set point on as faras we know as of today this cannot be changed, but your happiness meter your level of well being absolutely can be elevated. We look at them the ten percent that often many of us think are going to make us happier income, employment, family status, our health how old we are our religion who we're dating, you know, status that makes up for only like ten percent now there's an exception to that the monitor to t...
he income at the poverty level absolutely a little bit more ankle would make a huge difference in people's happiness if we're talking about our extravagantly normal life which we are so blessed to be able to live, this does not affect us that much we'll have spikes and dips inspect but long term wellbeing is not influenced that much what was seeing the biggest influence that we can change is uh view on life and how we react to that now why does that ten percent not works on well it's called the he danek effect meaning we're really good as human beings as adapting not just to the good but they're not so good not so on research has been proven that we did some research on lottery winners and over the course of the year yes they got a quick spike but they visited a year later and most of them had returned to base level and some of them actually had become less happy I look at this also in terms ofthe you think health yes health absolutely but also it's your outlook on your health I'm going to compare this to when I got diagnosed cancer that's when my life changed in terms ofthe how I viewed my workout at that moment it was no longer about moving for numbers it was not having energy to deal my treatments and when I first was told that I am they never see your cancer free you know it's like ten, twelve years later when you are in remission I for the next year I was so happy I was just like like I could I already felt my worst fear had been faced with my worst fear but then you know there's ten, twelve years out now it's like another part of my life so I have that deep sense of gratitude that I had right after that hearing that I'm going to be okay it's called keeping up with the joneses he danek effect and it's just human nature and is perfectly fine but we are perfectly human and we just want to recognize that and I heard on an interview recently was last week about a girl who had been in an accident and she's now dancing in a wheelchair and her outlook just changed everything and I love this saying I craved my extravagantly normal life and I want us to think about that over these next two days this life when the alarm clock goes up off we get up, we feed the kids and we go off to work and we send our computer how extravagantly wonderful on normal life and it's taking those moments on bringing them into our life that could be so powerful. So what about the reigning forty percent? What can we do? What can we and the great thing is you can take these steps with you tonight, tomorrow and into your day, but just like anything like when we exercise our body, exercising our happiness requires reminders and work and it's a daily process forty percent of our happiness comes from our behaviour our daily activities, but mohr important that how we see the world and our choices ah moment by moment choices every moment this moment, like I said before on this moment and this moment we have a choice. So sonia lumiere ski and many others who are studying this research grounded and evidence science off happiness, otherwise known as flourishing, living a life of meaning and purpose and with gratitude show that people are more resilient and flourishing tend to have a few things in common. What does they devote? A lot of time to family and friends and community community in terms of longevity is one of the biggest things we need to take into account ability. Surround yourself with people that you love nurture those relationships they're going to be so important not just again the length of your life but also the quality of your life they are comfortable expressing gratitude not just feeling it but expressing it they're also firsthand helpers they're the first ones to go you need a hand how can I help you? What can I do? How can I be of service? They stand in service of others it's not about us it's how we contribute to the world on one that we move from that place I find it does two things it takes away the fear every time I get afraid about something share again so I was a little anxious about being here with you guys and you're amazing creative on my beautiful hosts and everyone here little anxious and I had to reframe my thoughts I'm not gonna let that anxiety stop me from doing the work that I have no be somewhat passionate about because I've lived this I've seen what a difference it makes in my own life they always say you teach what you need to learn who so that here we are. So this morning I had the power of choice in every moment I'm I gonna let that anxiety run amok are my goingto be of service and recognize that it is my remind embrace it it doesn't have to be perfect to make a difference and that it's really not about me it's about you at home, it's about you guys it's about sharing work that I feel is so profoundly needed in many people's lives, and if you don't need it, I want to talk to you because we should research on you. Maybe, you know, someone that does, you know, we're so busy working on our spreadsheets and our business models on dh, you know, social media strategies and all that stuff I should know being here a creative life, I don't know, but that's why I'm on I tune in and I learned this stuff but you can have the all the techniques and the tools, but if you don't have the self confidence or their resilience to float during those times of uncertainty which many of us have especially for entrepreneurs for you guys at home many of you starting off your own business or doing it for yourself who's going to keep you buoyant who's going to keep you resilient it's you it's your thoughts as your outlook it's the choice it's the moment to moment choices she can have all the right numbers the right budget but those are just numbers and you are not your numbers your life mission is bigger than that. Optimistic flourishing people also enjoy the gift of the present moment. They have lifelong goals and ambitions they have a purpose driven life and also they are resilient in times of crisis and guess what? They also move they move for their body and the brain so I would love to hear from you the creatives out there in space you guys here that we know we have forty percent of our happiness right now that we could be in control of we know gratitude, you know, being of service we know thinking for tough, you know, joyful and optimistic outlook on our future the power off being present are all things that we could do right away that will elevate your happiness level. What is one thing that you could do today? Toe add five percent more, not forty percent more just five percent more of happiness into your life. I'd love to hear from you. Well, you guys for me a big one for me, it's recognizing that it doesn't have to be perfect when I let go of being perfect, I could be in the moment and I become happier when I try to be perfect. It limits my creativity, it limits my thought process, it limits everything that I know about moving while we're letting the students right here in the studio audience think on their answers on dh while we're letting everyone at home answer into us, we had some great responses from the previous question of what those two things were hoping you would tell your younger self julie, so call said, enjoy life, yep, and rodel said, be patient. Dar says just relax and ochoa had in epa says, go explore, go exclusive, right? And then sanders said, my two words are just go says so much, right? They say that, too, like with go explore when you're feeling fearful, curiosity is also a great antidote for fear and anxiety.

I decided to do something just for me and I am so glad I did. I am completely enjoying Moving to Happiness. You said what made you happy in the past and I thought of my horse. What makes you happy now but I couldn't think of anything associated with that. Than the woman said "Just breath" and I immediately thought of nature. Walks in the park and the quietness. So you could hear the birds are see the deer. The leaves crunching underfoot in the Fall. Not far along in the course and don't have the book but oh am I enjoying it. Thank you so much Petra.

Overall, this was an awesome class. So much good content, so well taught, nice contributions from the live audience (which does not always happen). If I was assigning a grade, I would give Petra an A+ for a truly well put together class. She also did a good job of summarising the research in this area. : )
