Hot Seat: Optimizing Your Website for Email Capture
So what I would like to do now is actually do a little Hot Seat, because we haven't done one of those yet today, where we take a look at one of your websites to see if we could better optimize it for email capture. Does anyone want to be brave? And because I forgot to pre-tab your website... What is it? It is darlingmarcelle.com, and Marcelle is M-A-R-C-E-L-L-E. Is there something we're missing here? (laughing) What do you see right now? Do you think we can add something here above the fold? Maybe an email opt-in? Yes! (audience laughing) So I do not know-- We're in Shopify? Yes. Okay, so I don't know enough about your theme, to know that we could put one in, but worst-case scenario, if you have no idea how to make something magic and big up here, I would add one to your navigation. Okay. That just says like, "Join the List." Yeah. Just a little something in your navigation so that there's something above the fold. So where on your list might we find-- Up, up, up, t...
here it is. All right. So I could move that up. You could move that up. There we go, all right. So you have first to shop, new designs, and exclusive sales. Do you find that that's working for you? Not really. Okay. Not so far. So one of the things to look at with this is it actually the incentive, or is it the amount of traffic that you're getting to your site? It might be traffic. I just redesigned my site recently. So yeah, so A, I would move that up. Okay. B, I would think about probably, you know, either getting more traffic, or really, the thing is like, most people coming in cold are probably not going to sign up the first time anyway, so thinking about more calls to action from your social media. Yes. So you can get people on there. Let's see, where else? And then you have it again at the bottom. Yes. That one could use a little jazzing up there. Like "Join our mailing list" is a little bit, is a little bit bland. So that's another place where I would add it. Then... Let's look at your blog. (laughing) That's a picture of me and my dog. That's so cute, though! (laughing) So you don't have a sidebar set up on your blog right now, so I would add a sidebar in and add it into there too, so that if you are starting to blog more and you're going to get traffic to your blog, which that's a good thing to be doing, you want an opt-in in your sidebar to make sure that you're doing that. Okay. And then do you have it set up so that when customers check out they're joining your list? Or do you not know? I have linked it to MailChimp, and I can't remember if it auto-clicks, or if it's, you know, clicked already or if they have to click. Right, so you want to just go in and check that and see so that when people are purchasing you have that in there. Yeah, so that they can-- Right. The other thing that you-- What's your shipping situation like? What's the cost of shipping? Is it free, is it on anything? Domestic shipping is free over I think $150. Okay, so you may want to play around, even though like, as we're looking here, many of these things are over $150, you may want to play with a free shipping, because when they are landing, they are landing directly into your shop, so they might be slightly more in a buying frame of mind. So you may want to do something like, you know, try, experiment with that free shipping opt-in incentive instead of the first to know, first to shop. Especially because the challenge, I think with your products, is they may want to be the first, but at the end of the day, you're not really selling stuff out, right? No, no. So everything is made to order? Yeah. So the made to order thing does make it a little bit trickier, for like first to know as an opt-in incentive. Yeah. The other thing that you could do... I don't know that I recommend this for your products necessarily, but if you were not making them to order and you were ordering them in say, batches, and things were running out, you could do a be the first to know when we restock, or things like that. And I will say that if you do have products that sell out, I like to put a call to action on that page that says like, hey, this is sold out, join the list so you don't miss out on future things Yeah, or I guess ModCloth would always do like, oh, join the list to find, or click here to find out when it's back. Right, exactly, so you can do things like that. Now Shopify has a thing that lets you turn that on, but it doesn't actually send it to your list, it just sends you an email, so I wouldn't do that, I would have a call to action. Yeah, so those are the things I would experiment with, but I think in your case, your biggest things are going to be adding something to the top. Okay. And making sure that you're actually dragging people from social media, because I'm guessing that you're-- is probably a traffic problem. Yes, yes. So, okay, awesome. Any other questions? No, I think that's it. Thank you. All right, do you guys have any questions about that? It's pretty straightforward, right, we're going to go through out site, we're going to find things that are missing and we're going to put those on there.

What a great class. It's easy to watch thanks to the bite-size classes (in some of your other courses, segments are too long) and Megan's almost every sentence is packed with easily actionable, immediately implementable tips. She knows what she's talking about and delivers it with super likeable confidence. And I learnt SO MUCH invaluable stuff. Super recommend this class to all creative makers that desire to connect with their audience and sell sell sell

I've been emailing my list weekly consistently for more than a year, and I still took away a ton of great information! I learned so much that will help me plan more quickly, get the emails written faster, and - best of all - make them more effective at converting into sales. Thanks so much, Megan!
