Forming the Paper Clay

Somebody we're going to need a little owl if we want or if you want to do something else that's totally fine to you know the one I did, I did the bigger owl and then I am going to actually make a little moon and a little boat because I want to put a little boat down in the urn stuff in my scene so for the moon I'm just going to take a little ball of clay and just shape it into that moon shape. I always think of the opening toe certain movies and there's this the little boy's sitting in the moon and I just always loved that I just think it's so cute, but what kind of smash it down? And if you wanted to, you could roll it out with a rolling pin use a cookie cutter or anything like that I'm just not that precise. Most of the time I just like I like the look of it being handmade and I think sometimes when I use cookie cutters and a rolling pin, it loses a little bit of that handmade feel because it doesn't have all the lumps in the bumps and and things so it's going to make myself a little...

moon shape here I said that to the side and then I'm gonna make a boat the boat is one that usually to do twice before I like how it looks so for the boat and is not a fancy boat by any means it's just a little tiny base of broken down boat but I'm gonna roll it out long and then I don't know if you guys did this but when I was in kindergarten we made pinch pots and you gave them to your mom and it usually looked like an ass train if your mom didn't smoke she wondered why you were giving her an ashtray but you know is the kid you'd sit there with your clay and art class and you pinch it that's kind of what we're going to do to make the boat so if you could have could think back tio elementary school art class kindergarten first grade that's what we're going to do so I roll it out like this and then I just start to make the shape and I pinch it into a little boat and again what I like about this is it's very forgiving so if you don't like it you can roll it up and start over again and if you work with it for fifteen minutes to your liking what's starting to dry out you just at a pinch or a spray of water and you're back in business I kind of push it down once I get it started and I'm starting to like the shape I push it down on here so it ends up with a flat bottom so it sits when we put it into the piece like I said, it is not meant to be a luxury liner at all I just kind of pinch and roll the ends a little bit to give him kind of ah good base shame this is a very rudimentary little boat and a friend of mine did a challenge for all of us a couple of years ago and to this day I don't live this down I made a sailboat out of a toilet paper roll and she did a challenge and she sent us the template to turn the toilet paper roll into the boat base and then it was up to isis artists to decorate it anyway, we wanted to, but we all started with this same template and that for me was one of the most fun things I've ever done in my life, and when I was making this look, it looks like my toilet paper boat and, you know, everybody always last thank you made a boat like, what do you what do you do with your life that you made a boat and art vote of all things out of a toilet paper roll? But there's just little challenges like that sometimes just open up your creativity and your ideas and lead tio other projects and you play around and you mess with stuff that you wouldn't normally use to make something and you're like wow, that was fun what else can I if I could do that? What else can I deal over break I'll show you guys the paper old boat but it was fun because there was probably ten artists who did it and it was just interesting to see how each person's was so uniquely them and turn turned out to be really cool ok, so I've got my boat shape is basically done here so I'm gonna leave them because I don't want it to move yet and I'm gonna put this stuff to the side to dry for leader so I'm gonna actually carry it to the back table there and let it dry how are you guys feeling about your molding and like about five minutes or so and then they probably got out yep you guys feel freedom makers many moulds is you want this let's use the mold maker even if you guys want to do some later we can do that too. So okay, so I I'm gonna put my paper clay away because it will lift its air dry it will dry out we're gonna put it in a baggie to seal it up so I can use it later and then it tries your hands out a lot so just when you're done you're gonna want toe either go wash your hands or grab some baby wipes you think I still had newborns at my house, the way I go through baby wipes, but hee hee hee, go for it and try it's. Fine. I don't know. There was just something about it. And, um, I took a class from someone ranger when he talked about taking gold maker, like with them to the store. And if you see something he'd like, quickly, make it walker out this store with it in his car, until it was pulling out back on the show. But I'm like, that's, kind of us. I'm like I don't condone that, I'm just saying, but I just thought that was kind of brilliant, but and funny, because it's, just totally something. As artists, we tend to think about and do.

This class was wonderful. I enjoyed Stefenie's teaching style and that the entire project (except the paperclay pieces, which needed drying time) could be completed in just a day. She introduced many media that were new to me. I would never have accomplished so much in such a short time without her inspiring project and encouragement. I completed my first shadow box two days later. I will watch any class Stefenie teaches at CL!
